Heritage Auctions Sells Walton Nickel for More Than $3 Million. VIDEO: 5:16.

05:16
Bob Merrill, Auctioneer, Heritage, Interviewer: David Lisot. Heritage Auctions sold the legendary Walton Nickel Specimen of the 1913 Liberty Nickel for $3,172,500 at the Central States Numismatic Society Convention in Schaumburg, Illinois, outside Chicago. The nickel is one of only five known and is graded Proof 63 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). This example belonged to the coin collector George O. Walton who died tragically in a car crash in 1962 in route to a coin show. After his death his 1913 nickel was declared an altered date and languished in a closet in the home of his heirs until being rediscovered in 2003. The sale of this historic coin generated worldwide attention whose story was carried in more than 1000 media outlets. Coin dealer and numismatic author Jeff Garrett, president of Mid-American Coin Galleries, purchased the coin and stated owning a 1913 nickel had always been one of his dreams. CoinWeek: Cool Coins! 2016 Episode 4 - 4K Video

18:06
CoinWeek's Cool Coins! is back with this, the fourth episode. We scouted out the floor of the Summer FUN Show, put on by the Florida United Numismatists, and recorded four incredible segments: Original Hobo Nickel Society president Carol Bastable shows us a hobo-style American Silver Eagle by master engraver Ron Landis. Estimated value: $6000. We ask early copper dealer Greg Hannigan to open his case and show us three 1793 Wreath Cents, graded Fine-12 to AU-58. You don't have to be a millionaire to have one of these coins, but you will have to save up. Greg offers collectors a saving strategy to make that possible. You know how hard money advocates always rail against fiat money and foretell of hyper-inflation? Well, we bet you didn't know that even hard money societies aren't immune to inflationary pressures. Allen G. Berman offers a hard lesson of state debt by showing us three bracteate coins from his case. These wafer thin coins survive to this day in high circulated grades and can be collected at very reasonable prices. And finally, we learn about the contraband gold ingots of the 1715 Plate Fleet. Treasure Auctioneer Daniel Frank Sedwick is one of the hobby's leading experts on treasure coins. He shares with us a 4 pound ingot that appears to have been poured over sand. It's a cool piece that you won't soon forget! *** CoinWeek is the #1 website online for news and information about numismatics. CoinWeek Breaking News: Arrest at Long Beach Show, $300,000 in Rare Coins Recovered

01:14
Dramatic footage from the Long Beach Coin, Currency, Stamp & Sports Collectible Expo has been provided to CoinWeek. In this video, a suspected thief is tackled by a Positive Protection, Inc. security guard as he tried to escape the Long Beach Show. Authorities were tipped off that the man and an associate may have been in possession of coins stolen obtained in a San Bernardino robbery. The two men had come to the show in order to sell the coins. The second man was taken into custody without incident. In total, more than a hundred coins worth more than $300,000 were recovered during the arrest, says Patrick Coward, a former New York City homicide detective and PPI show security officer. His backpack was filled with more than 100 ancient coins and other gold and silver coins worth more than $300,000,” explained Coward, a former New York City homicide detective. The brief chase and the tackle were captured on surveillance video at the booth of Stack’s Bowers Galleries (www.stacksbowers.com) of Santa Ana, California and New York City. “With the help of a knowledgeable dealer and the fast action of trained security professionals, two suspected thieves were caught and valuable, stolen rare coins have been recovered,” said Robert Brueggeman, President of Positive Protection which provides on-site security for all the Whitman Expo and American Numismatic Association convention shows. “We always want a safe, enjoyable environment for dealers and the public at these collectible shows, but we also must always be on alert.” A day after the capture of the two suspects at the coin show, Long Beach Police arrested two more suspects who reportedly came to retrieve the car of the first two suspects. Investigators recovered from the car what is believed to be the remainder of the stolen rare coins. Video Footage: Courtesy of Stack's Bowers Galleries.

CoinWeek Cool Coins! returns with our second episode for 2018. Coin collectors attend the leading national coin conventions in order to secure amazing coins and find that special item that you just don't normally find at your normal coin shop. The three dealers featured in this segment have an amazing lineup of coins starting with an 10th century silver coin from Sweden. This coin was not struck in the typical fashion and ancient coin dealer Phil Jones explains why. Next up, Seth Chandler of Witter Coins has a four-coin gold U.S. Proof Set from 1898. These are amazing coins, matched for look and quality and feature some of the finest knowns for the date. By our estimation, this is a set worth in excess of half a million dollars. Finally, we head over to the King of Carson City, Selby Ungar, to discuss two ultra high-end Morgan dollars that he has for sale in their original GSA holders. The fascinating thing about one of them, an examples that grades NGC MS68, is that the GSA did not even consider the coin to be "Uncirculated" due to the toning. Given the coin's value on the market today, that lucky collector got a real bargain! (c) 2018 CoinWeek.com
