It portrays how over the last 150 years mining has made Australia rich, yet created an unending struggle over who shares in the wealth. It reveals how mining helped forge democracy yet has repeatedly plotted to influence politics and even overthrow democratically elected leaders. Whilst mining has also been deeply damaging to Aboriginal society, ironically in the 21st century, it may be aboriginal people's best hope of economic self-determination.

Mining Matters in your Everyday Life

04:19
This video by the Colorado Mining Association presents an informative and educational video on how mining matters to each and every one of us in our every day life, not just in Colorado but around the world. Many do not realize that our modern society relies on mining for many of the products and comforts we enjoy including such electronic devices such as computers, cell phones, MP3 Players, home appliances, and medical diagnostic equipment to name a few . Many of the facets of the lifestyle we enjoy in Colorado would not be possible without mining, including ski lifts, roadway anti-skid treatments, mountain bikes, , as well as the heat , shelter and electricity needed to survive a long cold mountain night. Colorado is a major producer of molybdenum (called moly for short) which is used in stainless steel, cars, lubricants, and light bulbs. Moly is also used in automotive catalytic converters, to help keep our environment clean. Mining provides for personal health care products you use every day such as cosmetics, toothpaste, deodorant, calamine lotion, baking soda, and your sunscreen! 72% of Colorado's electricty is provided by clean, abundant coal. Coal provides 50% of the electricity nationwide. Colorado coal is low in ash and sulfur; therefore, it is considered "clean coal" Modern methods of filtering and scrubbing coal plant stack emissions provide for cheap and affordable energy to energize our economy and meet the affordable energy costs with little emissions into our environment. Alternative energy such as wind, solar , hydro and geothermal options become a feasible component for fulfilling our Nations' energy needs. Colorado is pursuing an aggressive alternative energy program which depends on the mining industry to provide the raw materials to build the solar panels, wind turbines, hybrid cars, and transmission line infrastructure required to meet the demands of these future programs. Bio-Fuel production, and modern agriculture in general would not be possible without the fertilizer and pest control products which rely on mining for some ingredients. Many do not realize that Colorado uranium is used around the world to fuel clean, efficient, zero emissions nuclear energy facilities in both the industrial and military sectors. Modern mining is conducted without damaging the environment. Any surface disturbances are restored back to their natural condition, typically providing an improved animal habitat. Modern Mmning is environmentally sound and actually safer than most other occupations. You are far more likely to be injured working in the retail, construction or transportation industries than working in a mine, above or below ground. Colorado miners are typically persons who love and actively protect their fragile mountain environment in which they live and work. They usually live in close proximity to the mines and go above and beyond any environmental or safety regulations, not only in their stewardship of environmental protection, but for the protection of their families, homes, co-workers and community in which they live. For more information on how important mining is to our quality of life we invite you to visit the following link : Colorado Mining Association http://www.coloradomining.org National Mining Association http://www.nma.org Mineral Information Institute http://www.mii.org If it can't be grown, it has to be mined !

Made in Germany | Coal Mining Technology

04:46
Germany's coal mining industry is all but finished as viable coal seams are worked out. Following an earthquake, mines in the Saarland will close in 2012 and mining in North Rhine-Westphalia's will end in 10 years at most. But German mining equipment is still in demand; more than a hundred mostly medium-sized businesses have found customers in countries where mining is booming. One such company is Eickhoff, in Bochum, which produces milling and cutting equipment for coal mining. Now Eickhoff exports 95% of its mining equipment, mainly to China and Russia. Robert Donauer went to a mine in the Ruhr Valley and paid a visit to Eickhoff.

Killing Carbon Jobs: Environmentalists blamed for 500 Workers Fired in West Virginia

03:58
Please watch video through completely - A Pittsburgh-based coal company, CONSOL Energy, will lay off nearly 500 of its West Virginia workers next year and its CEO blames environmentalists dead-set against mountaintop mining who have waged nuisance lawsuits for the job loss. But CONSOL Energys political problems are not unique to the mining industry, which has suffered under the Obama Administration. The Environmental Protection Agency is already holding 79 surface mining permits in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. The EPA says these permits could violate the Clean Water Act and warrant enhanced review. And, agency went even further in October, announcing plans to revoke a permit for the Spruce No. 1 Mine in West Virginia. The latest setback for the coal industry was announced on Tuesday when CONSOL Energy said close to 500 workers would lose jobs at their Fola Operations location near Bickmore, West Virginia in February 2010. CEO Nicholas J. DeIuliis said the poor economy compounded by legal challenges by environmental activists forced CONSOL to slash jobs. GERMANY: COAL MINERS CONTINUE ANTI GOVERNMENT PROTESTS

03:20
German/Nat Under pressure from tens of thousands of coal miners who protested for five days, the German government said Thursday it has negotiated ways of softening the impact of cuts in subsidies to industry. More than 7-thousand miners camped out in nearby Cologne Wednesday night to await the outcome of Thursday talks between Chancellor Helmut Kohl, union leaders representing workers in North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland, Germany's two coal- producing states. Union representatives emerged from the morning meeting with Chancellor Kohl after taking just one hour to reach an agreement. They were claiming victory. SOUNDBITE: (German) 'There will be no redundancies for now. The closure of one mine has been averted. Our fight was worth it. The actions of the miners, camping out for months, demonstrations and protests, and the impressive solidarity of hundreds of thousands of people has headed off the catastrophe. SUPER CAPTION: Hans Berger, IG Bergbau Mining Union The government still wants to cut the subsidies which prop up the industry by half. But has agreed to make the cuts incrementally to avoid massive layoffs and to pacify Germany's 85,000 coal miners. Helmut Kohl's Chief-of-staff said the objectives of all sides involved had been realised. SOUNDBITE: (German) I am pleased that it came to a compromise that both parties can live with. What really pleases is that in the next couple of years - that means until the years from 2000 - we will only have natural closure of mines and not abrupt shutdowns and intolerable regional unemployment. SUPER CAPTION: Friedrich Bohl, Chancellor's Minister Economics Minister Guenter Rexrodt said the mining industry and North Rhine- Westhalia - Germany's main coal-producing state - have agreed to provide funds needed to keep other mines running in the interim. However, the government says the number of coal mines will have to be reduced by half after 2000. The news was a welcomed surprise to the 3-thousand miners gathered at Cologne Stadium. SOUNDBITE: (German) 'We didn't expect the announcement that there wouldn't be any cuts coming about, that has now been secured to the Year 2005 and nothing better could've happened'. SUPER CAPTION: Vox-pop SOUNDBITE: (German) 'If things now happen as they were agreed to this would mean that nobody will be a hopeless case and that there is a future for our mining industry. But we must be careful that we are not tricked and that they stick to what they promised'. SUPER CAPTION: Vox-pop Following the announcement the miners left the stadium, they had occupied for just twenty four hours, many taking to the streets on their motorcycles to mark their victory. However, the government is yet to announce which of the mines they will close first as part of the agreement. After Kohl's government said last week it would slash the subsidies, tens of thousands of coal miners walked away from the pits and started daily demonstrations to demand that ways be found to avoid massive layoffs. These men camped out at Cologne Stadium to make their point. Thousands of others protested at rallies like this demonstration at Recklinghausen on Wednesday. A ton of German coal costs 260 marks (dlrs 155) to produce, compared to a world market price of 100 marks (dlrs 60) a ton or less, so the federal government is forced to prop up the industry to save jobs. RAMPS Mountain Mobilization: Hobet Strip Mine, West Virginia

01:26
More than 50 protesters affiliated with the R.A.M.P.S. Campaign have walked onto Patriot Coal's Hobet mine and shut it down. Ten people locked to a rock truck, boarded it and dropped banners: "Coal Leaves, Cancer Stays." At least three have been arrested, with another in a tree being threatened by miners with a chain saw. Earlier in the day, two people were arrested at Kanawha State Forest before a group of protesters headed to the state capitol. "The government has aided and abetted the coal industry in evading environmental and mine safety regulations. We are here today to demand that the government and coal industry end strip mining, repay their debt to Appalachia, and secure a just transition for this region," Dustin Steele of Matewan, W.Va. said. Steele was one of the people locked to the rock truck. Mounting scientific evidence shows that strip mining negatively impacts community health and miner health. Recent studies have found a 42 percent increase in risk of birth defects around strip mines, and miners who spend at least 20 years as strip-mine drillers have a 61 percent chance of contracting silicosis, a virulent form of black lung. "The coal companies are poisoning our water and air, and they're treating the workers no better than the land -- fighting workplace health and safety protections to get the most out of labor as they can," said Junior Walk of Whitesville, W.Va. As coal production declines, protesters are concerned that the region will be left with only illness and environmental devastation as the industry pulls out of the region and companies file for bankruptcy to shed legacy costs. Patriot Coal is currently going through Chapter 11 bankruptcy, in which union contracts and pensions could be on the chopping block. Both UMWA pensions and the state's Special Reclamation Fund are funded through a per-ton tax on coal. With Central Appalachian coal production in the middle of a projected six-year, 50 percent decline, this funding stream is increasingly unsustainable. Protesters are calling on the coal industry and government to ensure that funding is available both to honor commitments to retired workers and to restore the land. "Coal companies must employ their surface mine workers in reclaiming all disturbed land to the highest standards. Instead of arguing about the 'war on coal,' political leaders should immediately allocate funds to retrain and re-employ laid off miners to secure a healthy future for the families of this region," said R.A.M.P.S. spokesperson Mathew Louis-Rosenberg. Appalachian communities, from union miners to the anti-strip mining activists of the 1960s, have a proud history of confronting the coal industry and demanding an end to its exploitive practices with direct civil disobedience. R.A.M.P.S. and other campaigns have returned to this tradition to eliminate strip mining once and for all. Since its founding in 2011, R.A.M.P.S. has organized a range of actions, from tree-sits to blockades of coal trucks. Today's protesters are among the hundreds of people across the country who are joining this summer's National Uprising Against Extraction, using radical tactics to fight oppressive extractive industries and demand a transition to a sustainable economy.

GRITtv: Jeff Biggers: Uprising Against Coal Mining

08:10
This past week saw protests against mountaintop removal and strip mining around the U.S.--GRITtv coal correspondent Jeff Biggers attended one in Illinois, while around 100 people were arrested in front of the White House, including climate scientist James Hansen. There's no enthusiasm gap, Biggers notes, when it comes to the anti-coal protesters, many of whom have been fighting the destruction of their communities for decades. Biggers checks in with us via Skype from southern Illinois, where he's been covering the protests, and discusses the next move for anti-coal activists and the Obama administration. Coal Dust

15:17
Coal Dust - Respiratory disease from airborne particle pollution is a significant public health issue for coal communities worldwide. No nation on earth exports more coal than Australia. Nearly half of our black coal comes from the Hunter Valley alone. Much of it is carried by rail through Newcastle and stockpiled in residential suburbs. Already the world's largest coal port, there are plans to double Newcastle's capacity. Residents are worried that the existing coal traffic is increasing levels of harmful particulate pollution in their air. Mark Horstman examines the contested science measuring particle pollution along the coal corridor, the potential health fallout for locals, and possible solutions. http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/ https://www.facebook.com/ABCCatalyst @ABCCatalyst

Junior Walk Acceptance Speech, 2011 Brower Youth Awards

04:38
Junior Walk lives in one of many coal-dependent communities of West Virginia, where criticizing the coal industry can be grounds for ostracism. But Junior, who was mentored by the late anti-strip-mining activist Judy Bonds, continues to challenge Big Coal's power in Appalachia. He was a keynote speaker at the 2011 PowerShift conference in Washington, DC, and travels across the nation educating people about the long-term environmental, health and community degradation caused by coal mining.

Acid Mine Drainage Water Pollution 1951 Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board

00:46
This is clipped from the film, Waters of the Commonwealth, was prepared by the Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board in 1951 to carry the story of water pollution control directly to the general public. Abandoned mine drainage is water that is polluted from contact with mining activity, and normally associated with coal mining. It is a common form of water pollution in Pennsylvania and in other states where vast amounts of mining took place in the past. There are several issues with abandoned mines that impact water quality: acid mine drainage, alkaline mine drainage (this typically occurs when calcite or dolomite is present) and metal mine drainage (high levels of lead or other metals drain from these abandoned mines). Acid mine drainage is the formation and movement of highly acidic water rich in heavy metals. This acidic water forms through the chemical reaction of surface water (rainwater, snowmelt, pond water) and shallow subsurface water with rocks that contain sulfur-bearing minerals, resulting in sulfuric acid. Heavy metals can be leached from rocks that come in contact with the acid, a process that may be substantially enhanced by bacterial action. The resulting fluids may be highly toxic and, when mixed with groundwater, surface water and soil, may have harmful effects on humans, animals and plants. The film was done during the term of Pennsylvania Governor James Duff who initiated programs to clean up polluted streams, including the highly industrialized Schuylkill River near Philadelphia, which became a model for other polluted rivers around the country. He also tightened anti-pollution laws for mining companies, despite their strong opposition from mining special interests. For more on the history and work of the Sanitary Water Board, read their 1971 final report at http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/history_of_environmental_programs/13897/pa_sanitary_water_board_report_/588469 . The entire film is available at the US National Archive at College Park, Maryland.

Treesit on Coal River Mountain

07:10
Two protesters associated with the RAMPS Campaign halted blasting on a portion of Alpha Natural Resources' Bee Tree mountaintop removal mine on Coal River Mountain today by ascending two trees. Catherine-Ann MacDougal, 24, and Becks Kolins, 21, are on platforms approximately 80 feet off the ground within 300 feet of active blasting on the mine. The banners hanging from their platforms read "Stop Strip Mining" and "For Judy Bonds" in honor of strip mining activist Julia "Judy" Bonds of Packsville, W.Va. who died of cancer earlier this year. The activists demand that Alpha Natural Resources stop strip mining on Coal River Mountain and that the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection prohibit future strip mining in the Coal River Watershed.

Blair Mountain, WV: The West Virginia Mine Wars

04:47
America's Most Endangered Mountains - Blair Mountain, WV Pledge to Help End Mountaintop Removal. Visit: www.iLoveMountains.org - - - COMMUNITY STORY - - - "[Mountaintop removal coal mining would] wipe out a large part of the southern end of the battlefield that was occupied by the union miners." Blair Mountain, West Virginia is the site of a 1921 battle in the West Virginia Mine Wars,, the historic push of unionized coal miners from the north to organize the workers of the southern coalfields. Involving 13,000 union miners and 2,000 anti-union defenders, the battle was the largest armed conflict in America since the Civil War! It remains literally a battleground: a prime location for finding historic artifacts left from both sides of the conflict. It's also, however, a battleground between opponents of mountaintop removal coal mining and the coal companies themselves. Kenny King, a resident of Blair Mountain since 1962, explains how this historical site, which he has been working to preserve for 17 years, is threatened by a 333 acre mining permit. "[Mountaintop removal coal mining would] wipe out a large part of the southern end of the battlefield that was occupied by the union miners." A valuable piece of labor organizing history is not the only thing that would be destroyed by mining Blair Mountain. According to King, if they strip Blair Mountain, they'll lose innumerable natural resources: "Valuable hardwood forest, herbs like the ginseng, yellowroot, cohosh, and blood root... you'll never see it again. All will be lost; it'll just cease to exist. It will be erased off the face of the earth." If you would like to help protect Blair Mountain's many valuable assets, please take King's advice: "Let [your representatives] know that there has to be a better way than sacrificing all the mountains and forest land and historical sites just for a convenient way of producing energy." To support Kenny and his community contact: Kenny King • (304) 752-2260 • [email protected] www.FriendsofBlairMountain.org The Friends of Blair Mountain is a group of historians, archeologists and others dedicated to preserving the cultural and historical resources of the site of the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain in southern West Virginia.

Barr Discusses Negative Impact of the EPA’s Anti-Coal Regulations

02:04
On July 30, 2014, Congressman Andy Barr joined members of the Kentucky delegation, including U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Senator Rand Paul, Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, and former coal miner and America’s Got Talent star, Jimmy Rose, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from Pineville, Kentucky, at a press conference in front of the U.S. Capitol. Barr discussed how all Americans are negatively impacted by the EPA’s disastrous regulatory policies. Transcript of Congressman Barr’s Remarks: I want to thank the Republican Leader, the Dean of our delegation chairman Rogers, Senator Paul, my colleagues from West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and all of these members who are members of the Congressional Coal Caucus, for their leadership in defending an industry that literally powers America. And I especially want to thank Jimmy Rose, a fellow Kentuckian who has put a face on this issue and I want to especially recognize the thousands of Kentucky coal miners and their families who are out of work because of this Administration’s senseless and lacking of commonsense attack and war on coal. And I want to tell you, I come from a district, yes, 90 percent of Kentucky power comes from coal, but I come from a district that’s not a mining district. Jimmy is from Eastern Kentucky where the immediate effect of the war on coal was felt by all those 7,000 laid-off coal miners. But I want to tell you that this impacts districts all around this country that are not mining congressional districts. It’s about the auto dealer, whose sales are off 50 percent. It’s about the hospital whose bills are going through the roof. It’s about the security company that had to lay off all its workers. It about the fertilizer and seed company that can’t get the sales anymore because there’s no reclamation work. It’s because of the mining equipment manufacturers, it’s about the truckers, it’s about the working men and women of America who are going to see their cost of living go through the roof as a result of this Administration’s senseless policies. So let me just encourage other Members of Congress who are not with us here today to stand up for American energy, to stand up for the working families of this country and to end this War on Coal. Thank you very much.

E.P.A. Official Seeks to Block West Virginia Mine

01:30
The New York Times reports that a top federal regulator has recommended revoking the permit for one of the nation's largest planned mountaintop removal mining projects, saying it would be devastating to miles of West Virginia streams and the plant and animal life they support. In a report submitted last month and made public this past week, Shawn M. Garvin, the Environmental Protection Agency's regional administrator for the Mid-Atlantic, says that Arch Coal's proposed Spruce No. 1 Mine in Logan County should be stopped because it "would likely have unacceptable adverse effects on wildlife." In 2007, the Bush administration approved the project, which would involve dynamiting the tops off mountains over 2,278 acres to get at the coal beneath while dumping the resulting rubble, known as spoil, into nearby valleys and streams. The Obama administration announced last year that it would review the decision, prompting the mine owner, Arch Coal, based in St. Louis, to sue. In its review, the E.P.A. found that the project would bury more than seven miles of the Pigeonroost Branch and Oldhouse Branch streams under 110 million cubic yards of spoil, killing everything in them and sending downstream a flood of contaminants, toxic substances and life-choking algae. Kim Link, a spokeswoman for Arch Coal, said in a statement that the company intended to "vigorously" challenge the recommendation.

The Philippines is rich in minerals, and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the country's president, wants 2009 to be the year that mining becomes the main industry. But questions are being raised over whether the industry will be regulated well enough to preserve the country's diverse natural environment. Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from the Unesco reserve of Palawan.

Here are 5 guitar geek things pinging the #guitargeek radar this week. How does a guitar geek stay properly fueled, hydrated, and alert? You may think bourbon is the answer, but I reckon it is quite the contrary. See bourbon, although it tastes delicious, doesn't do much for hydration or the alertness aspect. However, Fretboard Coffee out of Columbia, MO is here to provide the perfect cup of Joe for any tired and fading fretter. This coffee company was brought to my attention by Acoustic Tuesday Show viewer and fan Troy and when I dug into the coffee I was not only pumped to find out it tastes good, but it also lives up to its name. See the name fretboard coffee is just plain awesome in and of itself, but the coolness factor bumped up a notch when I opened the bag to find a little card sharing what song was playing during the roasting process. Double whammy for us coffee loving guitar geeks; you get a great cup of joe and exposure to a song you may have never heard before. It's like a match made in heaven. Fretboard Coffee also seems to support live music as well have some killer merch available to peruse. So order yourself a bag or two, have a nice long sip and listen to the song that your beans were born to. Last Christmas Whitney's folks gifted me a book by the author Bob Boilen, entitled Your Song Changed My Life. Now first off, Bob is the creator and host of NPR's All Songs Considered as well as their Tiny Desk Concert Series so this man knows music. This book is a sampling of 33 artists and what song they define as changing their life. It is fascinating, there is enough context around each artist to learn some great factoids about their life and also you get insight into their vast musical interests. Each artist, in discussion with Bob, shares not only the song they define as life-altering, but also the when's, where's, and why's of it. This book is a great read and it's separated in such a way that makes it a great read. This week's artist I would say is from the "old-time" category, but I definitely do not want to pigeonhole them as they are capable of way more than old-time music. It's not often that you hear a new artist that is able to take you back to a time and place long forgotten and only best conjured up by an artist from that very era. From their voices, inflection, phrasing, and instrumentation these ladies do a great job in teleporting the listener back to a simpler time, yet they are able to freely flow from old-time music on up to more contemporary tunes. The Local Honeys are a made up of Montana Hobbs, and Linda Jean Stokely and the way these gals sing together is addictive. At first, I thought the accents were a bit contrived... and then I did my research... it's the real deal and it is amazing. From slow ballads to craftily written tunes all the way to instrumentals, these girls have it. Their album is a blast to listen to front to back, from the slow tunes to the peppy ones. Also, special note the tune Cigarette Trees is an anti-strip mining song that brought home blue ribbon from the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merlefest in 2017. This weekend, on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, one of the most amazing and inspiring bluegrass festivals will take place. From April 26th to April 29th, 2018 incredible acoustic musicians, music fans, jammers, and all around good people will join together to create the phenomenon known as Merlefest. Merlefest was founded in 1988 in memory of Eddy Merle Watson (Doc Watson's Son) as a fundraiser for Wilkes Community College and to celebrate ‘traditional plus’ music. I have discovered numerous artists just by checking out who is playing Merlefest in any given year. At one point in anyone's guitar journey there comes a time where you hear about the CAGED system. You hear how wondrous it can be to unlock the fretboard, you hear about how much it can help with your overall understanding of the fretboard, but when you find information on it may seem a little bit disorienting, and that's ok because I was disoriented too until I figured out the core elements of what makes CAGED so darn useful. See with CAGED you need to know three things: 1.) The 5 basic chord shapes C A G E D. 2.) Where the root note is for each of the 5 chord shapes. 3.) Why Caged is useful. Knowing why CAGED is useful helps with the reason why you need to learn it in the first place. vid 1 is live and people are going nuts make sure to check it out at: fretwiz.com Until next Tuesday, keep your guitars tuned and the guitar geeks uniting.  Cheers, Tony
