Ugly faces of Economic Development in India part 1 of 2

11:45
Economic Growth in India is not inclusive. We have analyzed the situation of mining sector and social issues related to this sector in eastern part of India. There are many instances where you can see the presence of mining company in Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal which have registered office and corporate office in places like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and London etc etc. The CEO's and top executives of these companies have offices in Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi where they are being paid more than $40,000 per month or (Rs 1.6 milliion / 16 lakh Rs per month). While on the other hand people who are displaced from their farm land back in Natural Resource region are hardly able to earn $1 (Rs 45) per day to cover their food expenses. The compensation for displacement is so less that they leave alone buying a new land; it is not even enough for renting a room for 3 days in smallest village. Pertaining to this sector, one way to AVOID improper distribution of wealth and exploitation of Natural resources is by decentralizing the company which is seeking mining rights in any part of India. For e.g. Any company who is seeking mining rights in Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal must incorporate another company in respective state and have registered and corporate office sitting there. This way the revenue will be directly reflected in State GDP. The company can efficiently implement their Corporate Social Responsibility to formulate Social and Health Policy for the displaced of the region and people who are affected due to pollution etc. This way the revenue will also remain in the region.

Frederick Law Olmsted Lecture: Aaron Sachs

01:19:06
In recent years, environmental justice scholarship has exploded. But virtually every relevant piece of work has understood the history of environmental justice as dating only to the late 20th century. This talk goes back to the 17th century, seeking to trace and analyze the evolution of a positive environmental rights discourse in European and American history. Having established our opposition to environmental injustice, we might want to ask: what exactly are we aiming for, in positive terms? What are the components of environmental justice? Is there any common ground left to stand on? And how might a deeper historical perspective help us answer these questions? Aaron Sachs (AB ’92) is Professor of History and American Studies at Cornell University, where he has taught since 2004. In 2006, he published The Humboldt Current: Nineteenth-Century Exploration and the Roots of American Environmentalism (Viking), which won Honorable Mention for the Frederick Jackson Turner Award, given to the best first book in the field of U.S. history by the Organization of American Historians (OAH). In 2013, he published Arcadian America: The Death and Life of an Environmental Tradition (Yale U. Press), which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction. Sachs has also published articles in such journals as Environmental History, Rethinking History, American Quarterly, and History and Theory. In his graduate teaching, he works with students not only in History but also in English, Science and Technology Studies, History of Architecture, City and Regional Planning, Anthropology, and Natural Resources. At Cornell, Sachs is the faculty sponsor of a radical underground organization called Historians Are Writers, which brings together graduate students who believe that academic writing can be moving on a deeply human level. He is also the founder and coordinator of the Cornell Roundtable on Environmental Studies Topics (CREST). Sachs is currently at work on book projects focusing on environmental modernity; environmental justice; and environmental humor.

H. LAWRENCE (1885 - 1930) Briefly appearing in 1915, then banned and taken out of circulation for its adult treatment of sexuality, Lawrence's visionary novel The Rainbow attempts to situate the lives of three generations of the Brangwen family within the continuous social change marking the Victorian transformation of Britain. Farmer Tom and his Polish wife Lydia, whose peaceful rural existence re-enacts the potent myths of Genesis; artisan Will and the matriarch Anna, who go to live among the industrial and mining communities so rapidly sprung up around Nottingham; finally the restless Ursula who, moving to the city, seeks sexual and emotional fulfilment with the Polish-descended Skrebensky - the three couples are not merely illustrative of the changing times, but allow the author to study in depth the conflict between the outer 'social' selves of those individuals and what he curiously calls the 'inhuman' essential being, the 'is-ness' at the core of their psychical life. Lawrence evokes this dark, unconscious 'vital core' through a language of breathtaking poetic beauty; a rhythmic incantatory prose which listeners to this recording will find perfectly rendered by Tony Foster, in all its nuances. Like Paul Morel, the hero of the earlier Sons and Lovers, Ursula survives her losses to face a future of uncertain but radiant hope: "She saw in the rainbow the earth's new architecture, the old, brittle corruption of houses and factories swept away, the world built up in a living fabric of Truth, fitting to the over-arching heaven."
