The 2017 level 1 mine emergency was conducted at Broadmeadow mine, about 30km north-east of Moranbah in Central Queensland. All Queensland underground coal mines must run annual simulations to test their readiness for emergencies. This is our Story - John Hunter Hospital - Cinema version

02:01
Australian mining means a lot to Australia. It supports our country, provides thousands of jobs - and is filled with great people. This is the story of Dr Paul Craven and the John Hunter Children's Hospital. See more stories at: ‪http://www.thisisourstory.com.au/‬ --- Australian Mining is helping protect and nurture this country's most precious natural resource -- our children. With the financial assistance of Xstrata Coal, John Hunter Children's Hospital now boasts one of the leading neonatal intensive care units in the world. Thanks to their support, and an incredible team of doctors and nurses, the hospital is able to provide state-of-the-art, speciality care to more than 1,100 critically ill babies each year, and is one of the largest and busiest neonatal wards in the country. Steve and Carlie Lawler know all too well how crucial this support is. Their baby, Lucas, was gravely ill when he was born and urgently needed a life-saving blood transfusion. Thanks to the expertise of the intensive care unit, little Lucas' life was saved. As his proud Dad says, "It blows me away to think what the unit goes through every day. I reckon it takes a special team of people to do this." And this team of around 180 nursing staff and 50 support staff is inspired by one very special man -- Dr Paul Craven, the Deputy Director of Neonatal Intensive Care at John Hunter Children's Hospital. Dr Craven was born in southern Wales near a large coal port, so he's grown up with the mining industry. But as a boy he couldn't have imagined how much the industry could positively affect his life, and others, "mining is part of the community and they have been very generous to the Children's Hospital." Steve Lawler defines it well, "through Paul's leadership and the equipment used, Lucas's life was saved". Over the past five years, Xstrata has funded the purchase of new equipment and the refurbishment of hospital facilities. This year, Xstrata's support continues with $200,000 funding to purchase crucial cardiovascular monitors that record the heart rate, breath, temperature and blood pressure of newborns in intensive care. As Dr Craven says, "The mining industry has assisted us upgrade, to offer almost the Rolls Royce of equipment". This kind of support helps his team go above and beyond the call of what's considered the norm for a public hospital. This is certainly the case when it comes to the new crib Xstrata funded for the Westpac helicopter, which helps get urgent life-saving support to society's most fragile members. In fact, the John Hunter Children's Hospital services over 22,000 square kilometres - an area bigger than the British Isles. And through the mining industry's support, the hospital is able to fund the 'Outreach Program' which travels to 27 hospitals to assist with neonatal education. But it's not just, as Dr Craven puts it, the "most vulnerable" members of society the industry helps -- mining's commitment to the wider community extends to the John Hunter Hospital Trauma Unit - the only major trauma service outside a capital city. This year, Xstrata continues its support with a further $200,000 to expand the Trauma Unit's education and research program, and improve the Trauma Hotline Service. All up, the mining industry has committed well over a million dollars to the welfare of the people of NSW - none more important than the babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at John Hunter Children's Hospital. "To see them getting stronger and bigger, there's nothing more satisfying" says Dr Craven knowingly.

This is our story - Bruce Chater and the Town of Theodore - 60 seconds

01:01
Australian mining means a lot to Australia. It supports our country, provides thousands of jobs - and is filled with great people. This is Bruce Chater, and the town of Theodore's, story. See more stories at: http://www.thisisourstory.com.au/ --- For over 30 years Bruce Chater has been the doctor in the community of Theodore, 600kms north west of Brisbane. Dr Chater has a passion for supporting rural medicine, and for his community, where he also enjoys jet skiing and water skiing on the Dawson River with his wife and four sons. However, in December 2010 Dr Chater's jet skiing skills were to be employed in a very different manner when record rains caused flood waters to rapidly encroach the town. When the waters began rising Theodore's population of 350 assembled at the local RSL. Dr Chater was at his practise trying to save equipment and medical supplies, when he received word that someone at the RSL was having a fit. He and his daughter-in-law Kylie, who works as a nurse, dragged the family's jetski to the front door and used it head down to the RSL to attend to the patient! With waters still rising, Theodore soon became the first entire town in the history of Queensland to be evacuated due to flooding. Neither the Council, Queensland Government agencies or the Red Cross were prepared for such an evacuation. Fortunately, Anglo American which operates the nearby Dawson coal mine, and is the largest employer in the region, had the expertise and resources to mobilise quickly. Three days before people were allowed to sleep back in Theodore the practise was already up and running.

Bill Gates has warned us that “technology over time will reduce demand for jobs, particularly at the lower end of the skill set … 20 years from now, labor demand for lots of skill sets will be substantially lower. I don’t think people have that in their mental model.” It’s hard to imagine a world where half of today’s jobs have been transferred over to robots, but it’s coming. Richard Wagamese - Indian Horse

57:11
Presented by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. In this emotional tale of Saul Indian Horse, Richard Wagamese tells the realistic story of a man whose life is drastically changed by one of Canada's most painful histories. When Saul was a child he was taken away from his family and forced into an Indian Residential School where he witnessed and experienced unimaginable abuses at the hands of the school's educators. In spite of the harrowing atrocities, it is at the school that Saul discovers his love of hockey, a game that, for a short time, serves as a means of escape. Saul's talent leads to a draft with a minor league team and a spot on Team Canada during the 1972 Canada-Soviet Summit Series. However, as Saul grows into a man, he struggles with racism and alcohol addiction. Saul's tumultuous adulthood eventually leads him back to his roots, where he confronts his past and begins a new journey towards healing. Richard Wagamese is an Ojibway author from the Wabaseemoong First Nation in Northwestern Ontario. He is the author of several fiction and non-fiction works including For Joshua: An Ojibway Father Teaches His Son, Runaway Dreams, and Indian Horse. Wagamese has also been a journalist and, in 1991, became the first Aboriginal Canadian to receive the National Newspaper Award for Column Writing. His most recent novel, Indian Horse, was chosen as the winner of First Nation Communities Read, and is on the Globe and Mail's bestseller's list as well as the Canadian Booksellers Association's bestseller's list. Among his awards, Wagamese's memoir One Native Life was listed as one of The Globe and Mail's 100 Best Books of 2008. In 2010 he accepted an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Thompson Rivers University. Wagamese currently lives just outside of Kamloops, BC with his wife, Debra Powell, and Molly the Story Dog.

Decolonizing Language Revitalization

01:56:24
September 25, 2013 - How has Eurocentric anthropology and linguistics affected the way we interpret our elders and ancestors who share their cultural knowledge with foreign researchers? Join us for a presentation with Khelsilem Rivers and April Charlo, indigenous peoples from community-based and cultural revitalization backgrounds, who will be discussing decolonization of language revitalization. Their presentation and open dialogue will address the context of rapid language loss and decline, and how colonization has affected or is embedded in the strategies of revitalization. In an effort to revitalize Indigenous languages, communities may have unknowingly adopted or assimilated colonized ways of thinking as they invest interest and attempt to repair or restore ties to culture and language. Are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha, et all with an English-mind or are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha with a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyaw, Kanien'keháka mind? Indigenous languages represent one of the darkest ways in which ethnocide and cultural genocide have occurred. It is expected in the next twenty-five years over 700 of the worlds Indigenous languages will be forgotten. In the Vancouver area alone, the two Indigenous languages are considered critical endangered; Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language has five to seven fluent speakers and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm has one fluent speaker left. Decolonizing Language Revitalization aims to put forward perspectives of shifting values, cultural understandings, and impacts on community. It is the stories we tell ourselves (as a people) that impacts who we believe we are, and then who we become. But if the stories -- even including, or especially the Indigenous ones -- are filtered through colonialism, we have become a different people because of it. April Charlo from Bitterroot Salish people and is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Montana. Khelsilem Rivers is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw language revitalization activist from Vancouver. Bowen Basin Economy - Lateline, broadcast 1/5/2012

06:24
Some communities in Queensland's coal-rich Bowen Basin say their towns are being starved of flow-on revenue as thousands of workers fly in and fly out. The rotating shifts used by the mines results in a large chunk of the area's wages being spent outside the immediate region. Locals say a two-speed economy now exists, with the winners largely outpacing the losers. The issue surrounding so called FIFO workers are currently the subject of a Federal Government inquiry. Amy Bainbridge reports from Moranbah, in the Bowen Basin.
