Coal Mining Filth near Clintwood, Virginia
I took this video the day after my mother nearly wrecked coming home at night. The mud was enough to cover her headlights and windshield reducing her visability. Highway 83 is one of the primary routes into Dickenson County, Virignia and to Clintwood from Wise County and US 23. Why should it be so filthy just two miles into the county? Call Paramont Coal @ (276) 679-7020 and ask them to put in truck washes like those up Roda, Virginia.

Justice in the Coalfields trailer
an Appalshop film by Anne Lewis about the Pittston coal strike. It's the 20-year anniversary of a strike that rings out as an example of worker and community solidarity. More than 1,700 coal miners in southwest Virginia and West Virginia walked out after the company revoked the health care of pensioners, disabled miners and their families, and widows. There were 4,000 arrests for nonviolent civil disobedience. Issues include the demand for universal health care, global energy, lay offs, and the Right to Work law.

The Coal Town System
West Virginia coal operators built small, company-owned towns for their miners to live in. The coal towns were almost always unincorporated; there were no elected officials, no independent police forces. Owners hired private detective agencies to watch over their workforce. Company towns were also untethered from the free market competition owners usually championed. "The Mine Wars" premieres January 26, 2016 on American Experience PBS.

1958 Mine explosion kills 22 in Bishop, Va.
10/28/58 At Bishop, Virginia meanwhile------(start film)------officials of the Pocahontas Fuel Company say yesterdays blast that killed 22 miners-----(show film)------apparently was caused by an improperly placed dynamite fuse. The official, who declined to be identified, accompanied rescue parties into the explosion torn mine yesterday. He said the physical situation in the blast area and the way the bodies were found inducated the cause. Company officials, West Virginia Bureau of Mines representatives, and United Mine Workers officials probed the blast area today seeking the cause of the blast which occurred near the point where 37 miners died in February, 1957. The sheet wrapped bodied of the 22 killed yesterday were brought to the surface late yesterday. A grim-faced crowd of some 5000 persons milled around the entrance to the min as rescue operations proceeded. The mine at Bishop is about 25 miles southwest of Bluefield. The Chief of the West Virginia Bureau of Mines, Crawford Wilson called to the surface that the 22 trapped men were all dead. The bodies were badly burned. 188 men were working in that part of the tunnel when the blast occurred. 166 walked out safely. Women fainted...and children looked on.....as the pitifil scene illegible/ It took four rescue teams to bring the bodies out of the mine. Wilson called the tragedy "shocking". The Bureau of Mines will later issues the official statement listing the cause of the blast. And while the investigation continues.....the WSLS-TV newsfilm crew is at this moment standing by at Summersville, awaiting the word on the latest blast in an area coal mine. Reporter Ed Thomas and Photographer John Gilbert had barely returned to Roanoke, when the second such disaster in two days sent them sourrying tillegible/ another grisly scene of hopeful waiting....waiting for word on the fate of miners trapped beneath the surface.

Drawing the Line At Pittston
News You Can Use: Fall 1990 #42 This program chronicles the year-long miners strike against the Pittston Mine Company in western Virginia. Though a landmark event in the history of labor (one of the largest labor disputes in the last fifty years), this working people's strike garnered little attention in the mainstream media. Using interviews with striking miners and their families, members of the clergy, labor leaders, students, and others affected by the strike this program documents the gradual political awakening of a community whose livelihood is threatened by corporate greed. Coal Town - Pocahontas, Virginia
Journey back to the beginning of coal mining in the Appalachians and the beginning of a new culture of people. Through oral histories, the film profiles the history and culture of the people. It features historic landmarks, such as the 70 year old exhibition mine, the 1883 company store, the 125 year old cemetery, the 1895 Opera House and various churches and buildings throughout town. In addition to the interviews of area residents, there are interviews with college professors, a local congressman, and local leaders. "Our hope is that people come away from watching and feel like we did when we first visited Pocahontas. The buildings are incredible, the history is fantastic, but neither compare to the real hidden treasures of the area, the stories of the people." UMWA members take to the streets of Washington, D C to save health benefits
Thousands of coal miners from the Southeast including dozens from Southwest Virginia are in Washington, D.C. for a march. The United Mine Workers of America are staging the protest to convince federal lawmakers to pass a bill that will insure health benefits for retirees remain in place. The bill has been a contentious point amongst GOP members. The union contends the end of those benefits is not possible after legislation passed by President Harry Truman in 1946 that guarantees lifetime care. Coal companies have cut the health insurance of many retirees, both union and non union, because of massive losses in the global coal market that some in the industry blame on EPA over-regulation of the industry.

Coal Mine Explosion Kills 13, Traps 20 in Southwest China
Thirteen miners have been confirmed dead as of Monday night, after an explosion at a coal mine in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality that morning. A total of 35 miners were working underground at the privately-owned Jinshangou Coal Mine in Laisu Township when the gas explosion occurred at 11:30. Two miners escaped, while 20 others remain unaccounted for, the Chongqing Municipal Coal Mine Safety Inspection Bureau said on Monday night. The bureau ordered all coal mines in the municipality to stop production and complete safety checks. Hundreds of rescuers including firefighters, armed police, and mining workers are at the site searching for the missing miners. Chongqing Mayor Huang Qifan visited the site on Monday night and inspected the rescue operations. According to its license, the mine has a designed capacity 60,000 tons of coal per year. http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20161101/8035581.shtml#!language=1 Subscribe us on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CCTVPlus CCTV+ official website: http://www.cctvplus.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cctv-news-content Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NewsContent.CCTVPLUS Twitter: https://twitter.com/CCTV_Plus

Virginia Coal Mine Coke Ovens And Railroad Spur Line
A photo & video compilation made of the historic Virginia Coal Mine coke ovens site and the Birmingham Mineral Railroad spur line that connected to it. The Virginia Coal Mine was originally owned and operated by Gulf States Steel in the 1890's and later purchased by the Republic Steel Company in the early 1900's. The coal mine site has long since been wiped away but the coke ovens nearby are still accessible. The Louisville & Nashville Railroads Birmingham Mineral Division built a spur line to the coal mine in the 1890's off of its Blue Creek line to connect with it and transport the coal & coke to the blast furnaces at the Thomas Blast Furnace in Birmingham. Today the trestle remains can be seen on Johns Road in southwest Jefferson County and the trestle remains over Valley Creek are accessible during winter months. Hopefully more exploring can be done then of this historic site.

New Coal Mines After $90M Investment
Ramaco Development appears to be bucking the overall downward trend in the coal industry by opening up two new mines. Though the rest of the coal industry is reporting closed mines and bankruptcies, the Kentucky-based company has picked out these new mines and will be investing $90 million in getting them opened. West Virginia's Elk Creek Mine and Virginia's Berwind Mine are expected to operate for around 17 years. The mines will provide over 400 jobs in areas where the unemployment rate is at least triple the national average. Ramaco plans to start shipping coal from these mines by 2018, noting that they are already talking to potential buyers and seeking out contracts. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2016-09-06-US--New%20Coal%20Mines/id-4f5dbdcd3c1d427cb60b66fd15ee890b http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

West Virginia coal miners protest NRA manipulation
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Union leaders say a National Rifle Association film crew tried to coerce West Virginia miners into bad-mouthing presidential hopeful Barack Obama on camera, and that the union plans a brief work stoppage in protest. The United Mine Workers will call for the stoppage at Consol's Blacksville No. 2 mine next week, union President Cecil Roberts said Monday at a news conference with representatives of Obama's West Virginia campaign in Charleston. Roberts said the union, which has endorsed Democrat Obama for president, is unhappy that Consol allowed the camera crew to ask miners leading questions about the candidate such as: "What do you think about losing your Second Amendment rights?" "This, I think, is an attempt to try to twist the facts here," he said. "We're just hoping people aren't misled." ... She tried to lead me into how to word the answers," Toothman said. "I ended the conversation about that point." Foyles never went on camera after watching the crew coach a co-worker's answers about her "concerns" about Obama. "It was my impression they wanted me to bash Barack Obama," Foyles said. A Consol spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Roberts called Obama a "great defender" of the right to keep and bear arms and said running mate Joe Biden is a gun owner. "None of us believe that Barack Obama is going to take anyone's guns," Roberts said. A UMW official said the union represents 450 of the 500 employees at the mine in Monongalia County. UMW contracts allow "memorial periods," which halt production by allowing members an unpaid day off.

Although the Mine Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation into the disaster, unlike the open federal investigation into the BP oil spill, the probe into Massey is taking place entirely behind closed doors. The United Mine Workers of America and families of victims killed in the West Virginia coal mine explosion recently filed suit in federal court to open up the federal investigation.
