What is STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE? What does STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE mean? STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE meaning - STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE definition - STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE explanation. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ In the world of finance and investments, statistical arbitrage is used in two related but distinct ways: In academic literature, "statistical arbitrage" is opposed to (deterministic) arbitrage. In deterministic arbitrage, a sure profit can be obtained from being long some securities and short others. In statistical arbitrage, there is a statistical mispricing of one or more assets based on the expected value of these assets. In other words, statistical arbitrage conjectures statistical mispricings of price relationships that are true in expectation, in the long run when repeating a trading strategy. Among those who follow the hedge fund industry, "statistical arbitrage" refers to a particular category of hedge funds (other categories include global macro, convertible arbitrage, and so on). In this narrower sense, statistical arbitrage is often abbreviated as Stat Arb or StatArb. According to Andrew Lo, StatArb "refers to highly technical short-term mean reversion strategies involving large numbers of securities (hundreds to thousands, depending on the amount of risk capital), very short holding periods (measured in days to seconds), and substantial computational, trading, and information technology (IT) infrastructure". As a trading strategy, statistical arbitrage is a heavily quantitative and computational approach to equity trading. It involves data mining and statistical methods, as well as automated trading systems. Historically, StatArb evolved out of the simpler pairs trade strategy, in which stocks are put into pairs by fundamental or market-based similarities. When one stock in a pair outperforms the other, the poorer performing stock is bought long with the expectation that it will climb towards its outperforming partner, the other is sold short. Mathematically speaking, the strategy is to find a pair of stocks with high cointegration (only high correlation is not enough). The time series of the two stocks must be non-stationary (Kalman filter can be used as for the test). This hedges risk from whole-market movements. Various statistical tools have been used in the context of pairs trading ranging from simple distance-based approaches to more complex tools such as cointegration and copula concepts. StatArb considers not pairs of stocks but a portfolio of a hundred or more stocks—some long, some short—that are carefully matched by sector and region to eliminate exposure to beta and other risk factors. Portfolio construction is automated and consists of two phases. In the first or "scoring" phase, each stock in the market is assigned a numeric score or rank that reflects its desirability; high scores indicate stocks that should be held long and low scores indicate stocks that are candidates for shorting. The details of the scoring formula vary and are highly proprietary, but, generally (as in pairs trading), they involve a short term mean reversion principle so that, e.g., stocks that have done unusually well in the past week receive low scores and stocks that have underperformed receive high scores. In the second or "risk reduction" phase, the stocks are combined into a portfolio in carefully matched proportions so as to eliminate, or at least greatly reduce, market and factor risk. This phase often uses commercially available risk models like MSCI/Barra/APT/Northfield/Risk Infotech/Axioma to constrain or eliminate various risk factors. Broadly speaking, StatArb is actually any strategy that is bottom-up, beta-neutral in approach and uses statistical/econometric techniques in order to provide signals for execution. Signals are often generated through a contrarian mean reversion principle but can also be designed using such factors as lead/lag effects, corporate activity, short-term momentum, etc. This is usually referred to as a multi-factor approach to StatArb. Because of the large number of stocks involved, the high portfolio turnover and the fairly small size of the effects one is trying to capture, the strategy is often implemented in an automated fashion and great attention is placed on reducing trading costs. Statistical arbitrage has become a major force at both hedge funds and investment banks. Many bank proprietary operations now center to varying degrees around statistical arbitrage trading. ....

Statistical Arbitrage Mining for Display Advertising

19:11
Authors: Weinan Zhang, Jun Wang Abstract: We study and formulate arbitrage in display advertising. Real-Time Bidding (RTB) mimics stock spot exchanges and utilises computers to algorithmically buy display ads per impression via a real-time auction. Despite the new automation, the ad markets are still informationally inefficient due to the heavily fragmented marketplaces. Two display impressions with similar or identical effectiveness (e.g., measured by conversion or click-through rates for a targeted audience) may sell for quite different prices at different market segments or pricing schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel data mining paradigm called Statistical Arbitrage Mining (SAM) focusing on mining and exploiting price discrepancies between two pricing schemes. In essence, our SAMer is a meta-bidder that hedges advertisers' risk between CPA (cost per action)-based campaigns and CPM (cost per mille impressions)-based ad inventories; it statistically assesses the potential profit and cost for an incoming CPM bid request against a portfolio of CPA campaigns based on the estimated conversion rate, bid landscape and other statistics learned from historical data. In SAM, (i) functional optimisation is utilised to seek for optimal bidding to maximise the expected arbitrage net profit, and (ii) a portfolio-based risk management solution is leveraged to reallocate bid volume and budget across the set of campaigns to make a risk and return trade-off. We propose to jointly optimise both components in an EM fashion with high efficiency to help the meta-bidder successfully catch the transient statistical arbitrage opportunities in RTB. Both the offline experiments on a real-world large-scale dataset and online A/B tests on a commercial platform demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution in exploiting arbitrage in various model settings and market environments. Economy of Nigeria

47:44
Nigeria is a middle income, mixed economy and emerging market, with expanding financial, service, communications, technology and entertainment sectors. It is ranked 26th in the world in terms of GDP (nominal: 30th in 2013 before rebasing, 40th in 2005, 52nd in 2000), and is the largest economy in Africa (based on rebased figures announced in April 2014). It is also on track to become one of the 20 largest economies in the world by 2020. Its re-emergent, though currently underperforming, manufacturing sector is the third-largest on the continent, and produces a large proportion of goods and services for the West African region. Nigeria recently changed its economic analysis to account for rapidly growing contributors to its GDP, such as telecommunications, banking, and its film industry. As a result of this statistical revision, Nigeria has added 89% to its GDP, making it the largest African economy. Previously hindered by years of mismanagement, economic reforms of the past decade have put Nigeria back on track towards achieving its full economic potential. Nigerian GDP at purchasing power parity (PPP) has almost tripled from $170 billion in 2000 to $451 billion in 2012, although estimates of the size of the informal sector (which is not included in official figures) put the actual numbers closer to $630 billion. Correspondingly, the GDP per capita doubled from $1400 per person in 2000 to an estimated $2,800 per person in 2012 (again, with the inclusion of the informal sector, it is estimated that GDP per capita hovers around $3,900 per person). (Population increased from 120 million in 2000 to 160 million in 2010). These figures are to be revised upwards by as much as 80% when metrics are recalculated subsequent to the rebasing of its economy in April 2014. This video is targeted to blind users. "A Vision For Quantitative Investors in The “Data Economy" by Michael Beal

44:22
Talk by Michael Beal, CEO of Data Capital Management. From QuantCon NYC 2016. Quantitative Investors have long been charged with an exhilarating challenge - to derive insight from data. To support this ardor, a plethora of traditional data and technology vendors have entrenched themselves as critical partners in our pursuit of Alpha. Over the last decade, a new partner in the pursuit of “automated truth from data” has emerged. Billions of dollars in Venture Capital funding have created an ecosystem of “Big Data”, “Cognitive Intelligence”, “Cloud Technology”, etc. companies seeking to extract information from anything and everything (e.g. unstructured text, sensors, satellites, etc.). This “Data Revolution” began in California and is now blossoming globally. As “Silicon Alley” brings financial technology to the mainstream, what new opportunities await the ambitious? What disruptions threaten the complacent? And which historical analogs best illuminate the path forward for Quantitative Investors in the “Data Economy”? 051: Strategy evaluation techniques, flaws and solutions with Dave Walton

01:05:20
Today we’re covering a topic which can really be a concern for traders of all levels, from beginner to pro, and that is the topic of strategy evaluation. Have you ever found that real-life performance does not match expected results? Or perhaps you have a strategy that is stuck in a drawdown and wondering if it’s actually broken? I’m sure we’ve all heard of data mining bias, over-optimization and curve fitting and the impacts this can have on our trading accounts. We may be even using techniques such as Out Of Sample testing, Walk Forward Analysis, Monte Carlo analysis and a number of other measures to identify or reduce the impact of these issues, but do these approaches actually work? Are there limitations or dangers with these techniques? Are there better ways? In this episode we talk to someone who evaluates trading systems for a living, plus his research into system evaluation techniques has won awards. The guest is Dave Walton. Dave was the winner of the Wagner award in 2014 for a paper titled ‘Know your system – turning data mining bias to benefit through System Parameter Permutation’. In our chat today we talk about the technique in his paper and how it can be applied to trading strategy evaluation. We also discuss some of the assumptions and limitations of the approach, and he shares with us some valuable insights he’s made since publishing the paper which have resulted in an updated approach he now considers a better alternative, so make sure you listen out for that. Topics discussed - How the typical approaches to system development can introduce datamining bias without you knowing - The types of systems that can increase the chance of data mining bias and what to look for - How the method of splitting your out of sample data could be causing you to throw away good strategies - Out of sample, walk forward analysis and Monte Carlo - do they actually reduce data mining bias? - The problems with using Monte Carlo analysis to assess strategy performance and why it doesn’t protect from overfitting - System Parameter Permutation - how to use it, why use the median, parameter range selection and new insights since the SPP paper was published - How System Parameter Randomization solves some of the issues of System Parameter Permutation - Stochastic modelling and how it can be used to determine if a rule is adding value to your strategy trading

What is BID SHADING? What does BID SHADING mean? BID SHADING meaning, definition & explanation

03:40
What is BID SHADING? What does BID SHADING mean? BID SHADING meaning, definition & explanation. In an auction, bid shading describes the practice of a bidder placing a bid that is below what they believe a good is worth. Bid shading is used for one of two purposes. In a common value auction with incomplete information, bid shading is used to compensate for the winner's curse. In such auctions, the good is worth the same amount to all bidders, but bidders don't know the value of the good and must independently estimate it. Since all bidders value the good equally, the winner will generally be the bidder whose estimate of the value is largest. But if we assume that in general bidders estimate the value accurately, then the highest bidder has overestimated the good's value and will end up paying more than it is worth. In other words, winning the auction carries bad news about a bidder's value estimate. A savvy bidder will anticipate this, and reduce their bid accordingly. Bid shading is also used in First-price Auctions, where the winning bidder pays the amount of his bid. If a participant bids an amount equal to their value for the good, they would gain nothing by winning the auction, since they are indifferent between the money and the good. Bidders will optimize their expected value by accepting a lower chance of winning in return for a higher payoff if they win. In a first-price common value auction, a savvy bidder should shade for both of the above purposes. Bid shading is not only a normative theoretical construct, it was detected in the above-mentioned real world auction markets (Jofre-Bonet and Pesendorfer 2003, Zeithammer 2006). Previous theoretical work on sequential auctions focused either on bid shading in an exogenous sequence of auctions (see, for example, Milgrom and Weber 2000, Jeitschko 1999), or on strategic auctioning to short-lived buyers, who never want to shade their bids (see, for example, Vulcano et al. 2002). This paper provides the ?rst model of a sequential auction with both endogenous strategic selling and forward-looking longer-lived buyers who can shade their bids. The model’s contribution is the analysis of the best response of the seller to strategic bid shading, and the exposition of a market equilibrium, in which bidders do not always shade. The most related model of bidding is Jeitschko (1999), who ?nds that relatively to exogenous and certain future supply, exogenous but uncertain future supply leads to a proportional bid increase. In contrast, high-valuation bidders shade more than low valuation bidders here. The most related model of optimal sequential auctioning by Vulcano, van Ryzin, and Maglaras (2002) (VRM), who study a monopolist selling to unit-demand strategic buyers who each only lives for one period. While VRM’s bidders do not shade their bids by assumption, strategic sequential auctioning has an effect on their bidding strategy because they are forward-looking: there is an incentive to overbid and make the seller sell more units in the current period than would be optimal for her.

Complete stock market coverage with breaking news, analysis, stock quotes, before & after hours market data, research and earnings. While it's certainly possible (even easy) to make money investing in the stock market, it's also possible to lose really quickly if you don't know what you're doing. Before you take any action, do your research and wait until you're ready to dive in. As Warren Buffett says, investing is a no-called-strike game. When you buy a stock, you're buying a piece of the company. When a company needs to raise money, it issues shares. This is done through an initial public offering (IPO), in which the price of shares is set based how much the company is estimated to be worth, and how many shares are being issued. Buying and selling one single stock can cost up to $20 at a place like E-trade! All of a sudden your $100 investment is only worth $80 — before you even get started. We suggest looking for a more affordable way to invest, like the Stash app. If you're investing under $5,000, you'll pay a $1 monthly fee. stock market etrade stocks future penny stocks share market tradestation foreign exchange trading trader e trade day trading trade hft global trade day trader speedtrader trade jobs swing trading trading computers trading economics proprietary trading highest frequency trading company prop trading arbitrage trading high frequency trading conference 2016 60 minutes high frequency trading high frequency trading firms nyc java high frequency trading predatory algorithmic trading high frequency trading code hft firms london high frequency trading volatility high frequency trading chicago how do high frequency traders make money all about high frequency trading microsecond trading software high frequency trading server etrade high frequency trading is high frequency trading legal high frequency trading wiki high frequency trading network design high frequency trading software development high frequency trading software at home high profit trading high frequency trading articles high frequency trading market share high frequency trading programming language high frequency trading india firms all about high frequency trading trading coach oil trading hft firms hi frequency high speed trading algorithmic trading strategies

Innovation and Health Care

01:42:38
Given that everyone is getting older and more prone to disease, medical innovation is one of the most important measures, if not the most important measure, of a successful health policy. Technological acceleration, including advances in genomics and stem cell research, suggest that we are on the cusp of a golden age of medical innovation. But government-imposed price controls and other policies can reduce the incentives for devising new treatments, resulting in preventable death and illness. This panel will look at the effect of Obamacare, and the policies of the FDA on innovation. More generally, will the current regulatory processes and reimbursement policies equipped to manage the next generation of personalized medicine and diagnostic devices? Mr. Peter Huber, Senior Fellow, Manhattan Institute Ms. Lindsay Kelly, Special Counsel, Irell & Manella LLP Mr. Gerald Masoudi, Partner, Covington & Burling LLP; former Chief Counsel, Food and Drug Administration Moderator: Hon. Thomas B. Griffith, U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit This program was presented on February 21, 2015, as part of the 2015 Federalist Society National Student Symposium.

Cryptocurrency Trader Investing In Cryptocurrency How Cryptocurrency Trading Works

20:54
Crypto Trader: http://successempires.com By the current statistical report, many of the countries are supporting bitcoin & cryptocurrencies. And in the forthcoming years, online purchases also expected to made with digital assets.People lives in many of the countries are shifts their mind to purchasing and to invest in bitcoin. Why trade cryptocurrency There are many reasons why the digital currencies are gaining popularity and momentum around the world. They have a finite supply that has been identified and source codes outline the exact number that can exist. Users of this currency benefit differently from users of traditional currency. For example, governments cannot intervene and banks cannot freeze your account. Since there is a limit on the amount, cryptocurrencies in that sense, are finite commodities, more like metals than a currency, and with time their value could go up. They are attractive to people who worry about direct control of national banks and governments. Privacy and anonymity are key to the ownership of these coins which many people appreciate. It is more and more difficult to identify accounts of users. Generally, transactions are cheaper than the traditional way using banks. Overall cryptocurrencies can change the financial world, and for the moment it is all still being worked on. Users of these coins still do need to remain aware of their limitations and volatility for the time being and foreseeable future. Their price flow is defined for the most part by market demand and thanks to the complicated code involved cryptocurrencies are impossible to counterfeit. They do make for a rewarding albeit uncertain investment endeavour. The long term results are still unknown but cryptocurrencies are only growing in popularity and for the immediate future they are here to stay and will most probably thrive. cryptocurrency trading for beginners, cryptocurrency trading strategy, cryptocurrency trading sites, cryptocurrency trading tips, cryptocurrency trading software, cryptocurrency trading reddit, cryptocurrency trading guide, trading cryptocurrency 2018,

HIVE

00:55
The HIVE-MIND Market Volatility Detection System scans PsychSignal’s Trader Mood data (a specific type of sentiment data) for anomalous behavior from traders and investors expressed via social media. These anomalies correlate strongly with increased price volatility. The HIVE-MIND System is designed to be a warning system of pending volatility. Think of it as a seismograph for risk, accurately identifying time periods of high volatility by uncovering non-linear patterns in the Trader Mood data. In addition to detecting volatility the HIVE-MIND System broadcasts a list of additional symbols that are expected to experience volatility due to their close statistical relationship with the initial anomalous security. These relationships are defined using a mathematical technique known as Topological Data Analysis (TDA) which maps the interconnected links between asset prices. Volatility flows along these links, and the HIVE-MIND makes this complex statistical fabric visible to your algorithms. BENEFITS Market Makers HIVE-MIND helps to identify time periods where volatility and trading risk are likely to be higher than normal so that market makers can adjust their markets in response to anomalous social media behavior. E.g. widen or tighten their bid/ask accordingly, reduce / enlarge size, issue trading halts, and so forth. Quantitative Trading Systems Clients with an intra-day horizon value the HIVE to predict price volatility so that they can enter new positions, or protect existing ones. E.g. the anomaly network feed can be used as part of an ensemble learning algorithm to predict directional movement in a symbol. Volatility Traders HIVE-MIND can be incorporated into volatility arbitrage trading strategies by providing accurate signals of future realized volatility of the option’s underlying asset. The data-feed provides a binary indicator of increased expected volatility as well as a set of connected assets which are likely to be affected by any volatility in the target asset via correlation contagion. Accurately Timing the Markets For traders who are biased to go long / short, the HIVE is an invaluable tool to time the market, as an asset is more likely to make large moves after the HIVE indicators are issued.

Excel VBA Pull Data From A Website

The website has changed since I originally made this video. The state appears to have been removed but you can still get the city and county at least. Change the code from what I say in the video to this: Dim sDD as string sDD = Trim(Doc.getElementsByTagName("dd")(0).innerText) sDD = split(sDD,VbNewLine)(0) Range("city").Value = Split(sDD,", ")(0) Range("county").Value = Split(sDD,", ")(1) A tutorial showing how to pull data from a website. In this tutorial I make a zip lookup that pulls in the city, state and county based on a given zip code.
