Imagine not bathing in nearly that long because your body had grown so enormous that it could no longer fit in the shower. Imagine looking down at the scale and seeing the number 653 staring back at you. That's where Bodybuilding.com forum member Jesse Shand found himself in 2013. By then, he had given up on the idea of living a normal life—at least by society's definition of "normal." "I spent my days playing video games and trolling the Internet," remembers Jesse. "I was just all negativity, all of the time." Jesse's heaviest recorded weight was 653 pounds, but he probably weighed quite a bit more than that. He could only find a scale big enough to weigh himself with after losing weight for two months. The only thing more remarkable about the amount of weight Jesse lost—300 pounds—is the way he lost it—through help from strangers on the Bodybuilding.com forums. | 300 Pounds Down | Remarkably, Jesse's transformation started by accident. "It started off as nothing more than an ill-fated attempt to get a rise out of bodybuilding types," he recalls. Jesse created a thread called "Ask the fattest man on the misc [sub-forum] anything," posted photos of his then-obese body, and waited, fully expecting—almost inviting—a backlash. What happened instead set the wheels of change in motion. "[My plan] 'backfired' on me, and people started to try to convince me that it wasn't too late, that even at my weight, all was not lost," remembers Jesse. "I didn't want to hear it and made my usual excuses, like not having enough money for groceries or lacking the motivation. But the members of the thread didn't accept my excuses and even offered advice on how it could be done. They walked me through it, provided me with a platform to get feedback and take baby steps, and the rest is history!" "It really showed me that even on the Internet, the kindness of strangers can completely change your life. It helped me to realize that I had something to fight for," Jesse says of his Bodybuilding.com comrades. If you want to look like Mike, you need to train like Mike—and the video you just watched only delivers a tiny taste of how this animal really trains. But don't worry—you don't need to be able to stand on your head or hold yourself upside down in order to follow Vazquez's workout. You do, however, need to hit the gym ready to work. Vazquez's training style is not for the faint of heart. It combines rapid-fire supersets of bodyweight and barbell movements, taxing nearly every aspect of your fitness level. If you think you've got what it takes to hang with Vazquez, get ready to channel your inner breakdancer and try this challenging workout. We have no doubt it will engage every muscle in your body—potentially including your upchuck reflex! Workout Notes Once you've completed Vazquez's quick warm-up, get ready to work on overdrive! Vazquez's lean body is a byproduct of how quickly and intensely he trains. To keep pace, your goal is to keep your rest to an absolute minimum. On each superset or triset, go from one exercise to the other without rest. You can only rest after you've completed the 2-3 exercises as prescribed. When you do rest, don't take any longer than about 15-20 seconds. Get a sip of water, wipe the sweat off your face, and get right back at it. If you're not accustomed to moving your body through these exercises at this speed and rep range, you may need to do fewer reps or fewer sets than originally prescribed. Do what you can do at your current fitness level, but try to continue working as quickly and efficiently as possible. By repeating this workout over time, you will become better and more efficient at it. When you're done with this workout, you'll move on to a little metabolic treat Vazquez calls the "finisher." To do it properly, you'll take an interval-training approach. Start with push-ups and do them for a full 45 seconds. When the clock hits 0:45, rest for 15 seconds, then move right on to mountain climbers. If you’ve ever lowered your body fat enough, you may have noticed that you have uneven abs (or “crooked abs”). In this video I’m going to discuss how to fix uneven abs. There are a variety of types of uneven abs, with each having their specific causes for being uneven. Uneven abs can be caused by genetics, uneven fat distribution or unbalanced training, improper mind-muscle connection, and body imbalances like scoliosis. Unfortunately, if you have staggered abs (not lined up from side to side), this cannot be fixed as this is determined genetically. Here’s what Stuart Phillips, PhD from the kinesiology department at McMaster University says about isolating hypertrophy. “Sarcoplasmic vs. Myofibrillar hypertrophy… perhaps you’ve heard those terms and even read information from some guru who says there are different types of ‘hypertrophy’. This is unadulterated garbage and basically anyone who has ever taken a course in muscle physiology, exercise physiology, and knows a little biochemistry would tell you so. The amount of myofibrillar protein in skeletal muscle fibre remains remarkably constant! There are no examples of where a muscle fibre hypertrophies with resistance training and the myofibrillar pool doesn’t grow but the sarcoplasm does! The occasional example of a discordance between hypertrophy and strength gain (for examplehttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22518835 (5)) is not, no matter what the pundits think, due to a ‘sarcoplasmic’ hypertrophy in the low-load condition. The obvious explanation is a neuromuscular training-zone specific strength response in the low vs. the high load groups – muscle/exercise physiology 101. Similarly, I’ve heard some say that blood flow restriction (BFR) training leads only to ‘sarcoplasmic’ hypertrophy… it’s a myth! Hypertrophy, when it happens is due to expansion of the myofibrillar protein pool. For people who think that your fibres can grow (not transiently due to fibre swelling – a short-lived phenomenon) by expanding their sarcoplasm are incorrect. If this happened the energetics of the fibre would be a complete mess due to greatly, on a relative scale, increases in intracellular distances for chemical reactions… like propagation of the electrical impulse from a t-tubule to the SR to cause contraction! So the next time you hear someone spouting off about sarcoplasmic hypertrophy you can tell them, with confidence, that no such thing exists! It’s a construct of bodybuilding forums… hypertrophy is hypertrophy and strength is strength. That said, not all curls are right for all people. In fact, some biceps curls could be doing you more harm than good depending on whether or not you have a particular injury or weakness. In this video, I show you how to determine the best biceps curl for you to help you build big arms without further injuring yourself. It is not uncommon for people to struggle with curls. In fact, some don’t even really feel them in their biceps at all. This is someone I call a non-responder and I did a complete video on how to overcome this and get more from your bicep workouts. What we are talking about here is being limited by issues in the wrist, elbow, shoulders or core. The wrist is one of the most common sites of pain and discomfort when doing barbell curls. This can come from the locked position of the wrist and can create pain that is felt down the inside of the wrist most commonly. There are a few things that can be done to alleviate this. First, you can use less weight on the barbell curl which will prevent the torque on the wrist that can be causing the pain. The next thing you can do is switch up the type of bar you are using for the curls. An EZ Curl bar is made to put your wrist in a more natural position which should take the twisting force off of them and help you to curl more pain free. The elbow is another site of common pain when doing curls. Here, the discomfort is felt mostly on the inside of the elbow, something called golfer’s elbow. This can be really hard to work around but if you understand what is causing it, you can. An over reliance on the forearm wrist flexors to overcome a weakened bicep is the leading cause of medial elbow pain. You can take the forearms out of the lift however by bending the wrists back and keeping them this way throughout the exercise. This applies to chin ups as much as it does barbell curls. The added benefit here is that you will also intensify the strength of the contraction on the biceps. The shoulder can be a real trouble spot for certain types of biceps curls. When doing an incline dumbbell curl for instance, your arm is kept at your side and in extension at the shoulder. This places a stretch on the tendons of the biceps that attach around the shoulder joint and within the joint near the labrum. The position alone without any extra weight can be enough to make this a bad biceps curl variation for you. Instead, opt for things like spider curls and preacher curls which place your arm in front of your body. Finally, a weakened core can make certain curls more painful for your back. If you find it much harder to lift two dumbbells at the same time rather than doing them in alternating fashion, you may have a weak core. Even though the lift is the same on each bicep, the total load that must be stabilized by your core is doubled in the case of the simultaneous lift. This can be worked around by doing them one arm at a time. Tips like this help you to get more out of your biceps training. You first must figure out how to rededicate yourself to your nutrition so that you can lose enough weight to make supplements a viable part of the discussion once again to take you and your results to the next level. Next you have to ask yourself if you are motivated enough to take supplements. Some people view supplementation as a way to be lax with the rest of their fitness and nutrition plan. They figure that as long as they are taking the supplements that they don’t have to worry much about everything else. Couldn’t be further from the truth. On the other hand, sometimes the act of supplementing makes you much more accountable for the rest of your actions. In this case, it can be a great advantage to helping you stay on track. That said, it is one of the most complex simply because there are so many places in the lift that you can go wrong. In this video, I created a check list to give your helpful reference for each of the most important places in the lift that you will want to get right so you can increase your gains and keep your joints safe in the process. As a physical therapist, one of my biggest concerns will always be the long term safety of a movement as well as the risk to reward ratio of performing the lift. In the case of the bench press, this is one of the most fundamental power moves that all athletes and novice lifters should master. There are plenty of things that can go wrong however, and the joints like the shoulders, wrists, elbows and even your back can become vulnerable if you don’t get it right. The first thing you need to note is where you are going to be doing the bench press in the first place. Ideally, you’ll have access to a power rack that you can set up a bench in and have the appropriate pins in place to catch the bar should you fail. If doing it here, you will also want to put the clips on the ends of the bar for added safety. If you are training at home however, the clips might be best left off the bar just in case you get stuck under the bar and need a way to dump the weights to get out from under it. Next the alignment of the bar in the rack and the bench on the bar is crucial to setting up a good lift. Simple enough, but make sure that everything is centered before laying back on the bench. Next look up at the bar and ensure that your eyes are at the same height as the bar itself. This will set you up for a good liftoff from the rack. Along the same lines, you want to be sure that your bar holders are not too high or too low. If you arms are fully extended as you reach up for the bar then you are set too high and will have no leverage when it comes to lifting the bar out of its resting position. Next focus on the position of your feet and your chest before initiating the liftoff. Your feet need to be under your knees in order to be able to contract the glutes during the movement and add to your pushing power on the bench press. If they are too far out in front of you, much of your pushing power will be lost before you even begin. Likewise your chest must be arched. This establishes a stable base of your shoulder blades pushing down and into the bench, which will act as a counterforce for the bar as you press it in the opposite direction. Lift the bar and tighten the abs as you lower it down to the chest. The bar path is crtiical. Make sure it is traveling down and forward and not just straight down. This will be more easily accomplished by keeping your elbows tucked closer to your sides, about 75 degrees away. At the end of your set, fully straighten the elbows and then slowly allow the bar to travel backwards towards the catches. From here, lower the bar once it has engaged the rack and you’re done. A perfectly executed bench press set. Let the chest gains begin, and let the healthy shoulders and joints continue!
