How Cambridge Analytica, Facebook swayed the 2016 election

03:00
Here's how a data firm helped Donald Trump get elected as president. We have the FAQs. What started with a Friday news dump on March 16 has morphed into a full-blown crisis for Facebook. The social network disclosed Friday night it suspended Cambridge Analytica from its platform after claiming it had improperly obtained information on 50 million user profiles. Cambridge Analytica has said any data obtained through Facebook was done so "legally and fairly." How it started On Friday, Facebook revealed the suspension of Cambridge Analytica, claiming the data firm secured information on user profiles through a personality quiz app from Global Science Research without permission. The app collected information such as hometown, content the users liked and their friends, as well as information from people's friends. The next morning, reports from The New York Times and The Observer of London surfaced alleging Cambridge Analytica used that data to target voters during the 2016 presidential election. Why does this matter? Facebook is already under scrutiny over the impact of Russian ads run on its platform during the presidential election. Meanwhile, Cambridge Analytica was asked in December to turn over documents to special counsel Robert Mueller, as part of his investigation into possible Russian collusion. Beyond Russia, the incident has raised concerns over how well-equipped Facebook is at keeping data secure from third parties. Algorithmic Bias: From Discrimination Discovery to Fairness-Aware Data Mining (Part 1)

35:12
Authors: Carlos Castillo, EURECAT, Technology Centre of Catalonia Francesco Bonchi, ISI Foundation Abstract: Algorithms and decision making based on Big Data have become pervasive in all aspects of our daily lives lives (offline and online), as they have become essential tools in personal finance, health care, hiring, housing, education, and policies. It is therefore of societal and ethical importance to ask whether these algorithms can be discriminative on grounds such as gender, ethnicity, or health status. It turns out that the answer is positive: for instance, recent studies in the context of online advertising show that ads for high-income jobs are presented to men much more often than to women [Datta et al., 2015]; and ads for arrest records are significantly more likely to show up on searches for distinctively black names [Sweeney, 2013]. This algorithmic bias exists even when there is no discrimination intention in the developer of the algorithm. Sometimes it may be inherent to the data sources used (software making decisions based on data can reflect, or even amplify, the results of historical discrimination), but even when the sensitive attributes have been suppressed from the input, a well trained machine learning algorithm may still discriminate on the basis of such sensitive attributes because of correlations existing in the data. These considerations call for the development of data mining systems which are discrimination-conscious by-design. This is a novel and challenging research area for the data mining community. The aim of this tutorial is to survey algorithmic bias, presenting its most common variants, with an emphasis on the algorithmic techniques and key ideas developed to derive efficient solutions. The tutorial covers two main complementary approaches: algorithms for discrimination discovery and discrimination prevention by means of fairness-aware data mining. We conclude by summarizing promising paths for future research. More on http://www.kdd.org/kdd2016/ KDD2016 conference is published on http://videolectures.net/

AI for Marketing & Growth #1 - Predictive Analytics in Marketing

03:17
AI for Marketing & Growth #1 - Predictive Analytics in Marketing Download our list of the world's best AI Newsletters 👉https://hubs.ly/H0dL7N60 Welcome to our brand new AI for Marketing & Growth series in which we’ll get you up to speed on Predictive Analytics in Marketing! This series you-must-watch-this-every-two-weeks sort of series or you’re gonna get left behind.. Predictive analytics in marketing is a form of data mining that uses machine learning and statistical modeling to predict the future. Based on historical data. Applications in action are all around us already. For example, If your bank notifies you of suspicious activity on your bank card, it is likely that a statistical model was used to predict your future behavior based on your past transactions. Serious deviations from this pattern are flagged as suspicious. And that’s when you get the notification. So why should marketers care? Marketers can use it to help optimise conversions for their funnels by forecasting the best way to move leads down the different stages, turning them into qualified prospects and eventually converting them into paying customers. Now, if you can predict your customers’ behavior along the funnel, you can also think of messages to best influence that behavior and reach your customer’s highest potential value. This is super-intelligence for marketers! Imagine if you could not only determine whether a lead is a good fit for your product but also which are most promising. This’ll allow you to focus your team’s efforts on leads with the highest ROI. Which will also imply a shift in mindset. Going from quantity metrics, or how many leads you can attract, to quality metrics, or how many good leads you can engage. You can now easily predict your OMTM or KPIs in real-time and finally push vanity metrics aside. For example, based on my location, age, past purchases, and gender, how likely are you to buy eggs I if you just added milk to your basket? A supermarket can use this information to automatically recommend products to you A financial services provider can use thousands of data points created by your online behaviour to decide which credit card to offer you, and when. A fashion retailer can use your data to decide which shoes to recommend as your next purchase, based on the jacket you just bought. Sure, businesses can improve their conversion rates, but the implications are much bigger than that. Predictive analytics allows companies to set pricing strategies based on consumer expectations and competitor benchmarks. Retailers can predict demand, and therefore make sure they have the right level of stock for each of their products. The evidence of this revolution is already around us. Every time we type a search query into Google, Facebook or Amazon we’re feeding data into the machine. The machine thrives on data, growing ever more intelligent. To leverage the potential of artificial intelligence and predictive analytics, there are four elements that organizations need to put into place. 1. The right questions 2. The right data 3. The right technology 4. The right people Ok.. let’s look at some use cases of businesses that are already leveraging predictive analytics. FRAppE Detecting Malicious Facebook Applications

06:11
Title: FRAppE Detecting Malicious Facebook Applications Domain: Data Mining Key Features: 1. We systematically profile apps and show that malicious app profiles are significantly different than those of benign apps. A striking observation is the “laziness" of hackers; many malicious apps have the same name, as 8% of unique names of malicious apps are each used by more than 10 different apps (as defined by their app IDs). 2. We conduct a forensics investigation on the malicious app ecosystem to identify and quantify the techniques used to promote malicious apps. The most interesting result is that apps collude and collaborate at a massive scale. Apps promote other apps via posts that point to the “promoted" apps. If we describe the collusion relationship of promoting-promoted apps as a graph, we find 1,584 promoter apps that promote 3,723 other apps. 3. We were surprised to find popular good apps, such as ‘FarmVille’ and ‘Facebook for iPhone’, posting malicious posts. On further investigation, we found a lax authentication rule in Facebook that enabled hackers to make malicious posts appear as though they came from these apps. 4. We implemented a desktop application called Phish Shield, which concentrates on URL and Website Content of phishing page. Phish Shield takes URL as input and outputs the status of URL as phishing or legitimate website. The heuristics used to detect phishing are footer links with null value, zero links in body of html, copyright content, title content and website identity. But as bad as the beginning of Facebook is, the parallels between the CIA's backing of Google's dream of becoming "the mind of God," and the CIA's funding of Facebook's goal of knowing everything about everybody is anything but benign.

Social Anxiety & Facebook Use: Research Presentation

09:30
Elizabeth Hagin, Robyn Abree, Ashma Jivani & Dustin Tunick - all master's students at the University of Georgia -- present their paper "Social Anxiousness and Facebook Use: Exploring the Uses and Gratifications of Social Networking in Socially Anxious Individuals." An online survey of 263 respondents was conducted at a large southeastern research university to explore how social anxiousness in interpersonal communication influences gratifications sought and gratifications obtained from Facebook use. The study drew upon the uses and gratifications theory to test Sheldon's unwillingness to communicate scale and Leary's social anxiousness interaction scale. Once analyzed, data revealed a relationship between motives of Facebook use and people who feel socially anxious. The study found that those who are socially anxious use Facebook for companionship more than those who are not. However, there were no significant finding that respondents use Facebook simply because it is cool. Overall, this study only offered minor proof that social anxiousness does in fact play a role in elevated Facebook use. Fiance Visa Denial due to Social Media Data Mining

http://www.visacoach.com/visa-denial-social-media-data-mining.html USCIS recently hired contractors to research social media to provide additional data for the extreme vetting of Fiance, Spouse and other visa applicants. Collection starts October 18. If you have any "suspect" exposure, you have only a few more days to take it down. One of VisaCoach's clients has already experienced denial due to his Facebook presence. This couple's case was as near perfect as we have seen. They were young and in love. They had known each other for a few years and had met more than once. They were evenly matched by age, values and religion. Their "front loaded" petition was awesome and included many solid evidences of their bona fides. The American sponsor even accompanied his fiancé to the interview to demonstrate his sincerity and support for the petition. After a brief interview where the sponsor was not allowed to join in nor asked any questions before, during or after, the consular officer, denied the case. The couple was devastated and confused. What could have gone wrong? A consular officer who exhibits professionalism will state the reasons for denial in writing. And provide this to the rejected applicant immediately, often at the close of the interview itself. You may not agree with the decision, but at least know what it was and then have a starting point for renewed efforts. The officer refused to provide any verbal or written explanation. All the couple had was the fiancee's memory of the interview. I asked her to write a transcript of what happened, to recall exactly what was said and even what the body language was, so that we could study this in an attempt to reconstruct what MIGHT have been in the consular officer’s mind. What seemed odd and out of context, was the consular officer made some comments about "conservative values" and what is a "woman's role in society and in the home". Those comments seemed rather strange at the time and the foreign born fiancé had no idea where those comments came from. Eventually it dawned on us. The American sponsor is active on FaceBook. He is outspoken and his views are somewhat "anti feminist". He had posted on his social media pages, and entered into many online debates, his ideas on conservative values, and HIS ideas about a women's role in the home and society. He is not a bad guy. Not a bad husband. He was just expressing his free speech. He just had some strong views that are not popular, that are not considered "politically correct". The consular officer did her own internet search, found his activity and "Was NOT amused", and denied, putting this loving couple's life's on hold. Was it fair or reasonable that they were denied?. No, I don't think so. Happy end to the story. We took down his Facebook account, reapplied, and six months later they had their visa and began their married life together in Alaska. One random consular officer searching on Facebook ended in a denial. What will happen when ALL Fiance and Spouse applications are accompanied by a detailed dossier of one's online statements, comments jokes, embarrassments, positive and negative feedback from friends or trolls? Expect disaster. Expect many more denials, simply due to exercising a US Citizen's right to free speech. In Conclusion: "Freedom of Speech", doesn't mean freedom to get your visa. The prudent path is prior to applying for a Fiance or Spouse visa to make sure there are no skeletons in your online closet. Clean or temporarily remove, or make private, potentially controversial aspects of your online and public presence before proceeding with your visa application.

UT Austin Ep 2 - Social Media Data Mining - Vitrue Social Marketing Minute

01:13
UT Austin discusses social media data mining and analytics with Vitrue - Personally, I am overwhelmed by the amount of data that I can mine from social media. I've had to concentrate on what is really important to UT Athletics. Learning what that is has taken some time. I would like to be able to better quantify if a ticket sale came from a particular tweet or Facebook post. It would be really nice to have a tool where I can guarantee that our efforts are leading to ticket or merchandise sales.

The real value of your personal data - Docu - 2013

49:18
The personal data that is being collected by internet companies has turned into a goldmine. The applications for this enormous mountain of data is endless, from health care uses to marketeers who can accurately predict your behavior. But who is making money from your data? And who owns your personal data? Original title: The value of your personal data. Personal data is being collected constantly. Smartphones send your location data, internet browsers store which websites you visited and credit card companies carefully register your buying patterns. One would say that all this personal data is being used to send you advertisements and banners. But that’s just the start. Your data is not only used to understand who you are right now, but also what your life will look like in the future, because that is where the big money is. Could we regain the control over our own personal data, so that we can share in the profits? Due to huge flow of information, one can tell who we are today and what we will do tomorrow. Can we get control of our own data? Information is collected and stored on your behalf. Via mobile phone and computer, every step you take is saved and analyzed. By companies like Google, Facebook, Apple and Twitter, among others. This precious personal data is not just saved. There are now new valuable uses for your data, giving your personal data the worth of gold. Data centers full of your personal data are the heart of what is called Big Data. A treasure of valuable new insights, derived from your location data, emails, photos, text messages, and more from your digital production. Because your personal data is not only used to send customized ads. Your data is used to predict your future behavior. Through smart analyzes of all your behavior that you leave behind on your mobile phone and computer, it’s easy to find out who you are. And that's not that hard, it turns out. For example, the University of Cambridge just by looking at which buttons you click on Facebook, can see if your parents are divorced, whether you are gay, and so on. Predicting human behavior, possible thanks to all your personal data, can help to design cities better, combat diseases and prevent wars. But if all of your personal data is so valuable, then shouldn’t it be time for you to get control of it? And also take part of that profit for yourself? RANT: SGT Report DELETED!! Data Mining/Mind Control Though Education Technology

22:49
When YouTube decides to censor and delete channels that have over 300,000 subscribers for simply reporting the truth, it becomes apparent that many of us on this platform are probably not too far behind. For many of us who have been exposing the nefarious activities of the elite, there will come a cross roads when we will either have to comply to their brand of useless mind manipulating content, or be cut off. The enforcement won't necessarily have to come through some sort of violent uprising. Rather, it will come from the education system itself, programming the minds of an entire generation with the cloud of data and recorded experiences to "learn" from. The elimination of such individualism will result in the loss of identity, in exchange for something else...just like losing the image of God in exchange for the image of the beast.
