Mining engineering is an engineering discipline that applies science and technology to the extraction of minerals from the earth. Mining engineering is associated with many other disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy, geotechnical engineering and surveying. A mining engineer may manage any phase of mining operations – from exploration and discovery of the mineral resource, through feasibility study, mine design, development of plans, production and operations to mine closure. With the process of Mineral extraction, some amount of waste and uneconomic material are generated which are the primary source of pollution in the vicinity of mines. Mining activities by their nature cause a disturbance of the natural environment in and around which the minerals are located. Mining engineers must therefore be concerned not only with the production and processing of mineral commodities, but also with the mitigation of damage to the environment both during and after mining as a result of the change in the mining area. Salary and statistics Mining salaries are usually determined by the level of skill required, where the position is, and what kind of organization the engineer is working for. When comparing salaries from one region to another, cost of living and other factors need to be taken into consideration. Mining engineers in India earn relatively high salaries in comparison to many other professions, with an average salary of $15,250. However, in comparison to mining engineer salaries in other regions, such as Canada, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, Indian salaries are low. In the United States, there are an estimated 6,630 employed mining engineers, with a mean yearly salary of USD$90,070. Education Students outside Colorado School of Mines campus There are many ways to become a Mining Engineer but all include a university degree in Mining Engineering. Primarily, training includes a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng. or B.E.), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. or B.S.), Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) orBachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Mining Engineering. Depending on the country and jurisdiction, to be licensed as a mining engineer a Master's degree; Master of Engineering (M.Eng.),Master of Science (M.Sc or M.S.) or Master of Applied Science(M.A.Sc.) maybe required. There are also mining engineers who have come from other disciplines e.g. from engineering fields likeMechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering,Geomatics Engineering, Environmental Engineering or from science fields like Geology, Geophysics, Physics, Geomatics, Earth Science,Mathematics, However, this path requires taking a graduate degree such as M.Eng, M.S., M.Sc. or M.A.Sc. in Mining Engineering after graduating from a different quantitative undergraduate program in order to be qualified as a mining engineer. The fundamental subjects of mining engineering study usually include: Mathematics; Calculus, Algebra, Differential Equations,Numerical Analysis Geoscience; Geochemistry, Geophysics, Mineralogy, Geomatics Mechanics; Rock mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Geomechanics Thermodynamics; Heat Transfer, Work (thermodynamics), Mass Transfer Hydrogeology Fluid Mechanics; Fluid statics, Fluid Dynamics Geostatistics; Spatial Analysis, Statistics Control Engineering; Control Theory, Instrumentation Surface Mining; Open-pit mining Underground mining (soft rock) Underground mining (hard rock) Computing; MATLAB, Maptek (Vulcan) Drilling and blasting Solid Mechanics; Fracture Mechanics In the United States, the University of Arizona offers a B.S. in Mining Engineering with tracks in mine operations, geomechanics, sustainable resource development and mineral processing. South Dakota School of Mines and Technology offers a B.S. in Mining Engineering and also an M.S. in Mining Engineering and Management and Colorado School of Mines offers a M.S. in Mining and Earth-Systems Engineering, also Doctorate (Ph.D.) degrees in Mining and Earth-Systems Engineering and Underground Construction and Tunnel Engineering respectively. In Canada, McGill University offers both undergraduate (B.Sc. or B.Eng.) and graduate (M.Sc. or M.S.) degrees in Mining Engineering. and the University of British Columbia in Vancouveroffers a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Mining Engineering and also graduate degrees (M.A.Sc. or M.Eng and Ph.D.) in Mining Engineering. In Europe most programs are integrated (B.S. plus M.S. into one) after the Bologna Process and take 5 years to complete. InPortugal, the University of Porto offers a M.Eng. in Mining and Geo-Environmental Engineering and in Spain the Technical University of Madrid offers degrees in Mining Engineering with tracks in Mining Technology, Mining Operations, Fuels and Explosives, Metallurgy.

http://www.edgedrilling.com.au/ Getting into a Geotechnical Engineering Industry Before getting a geotechnical engineering job one must have training and education in fields such as geology, construction, mining as well as engineering. Also if you want to pursue a career as one of the geotechnical engineers you should earn a degree in civil, geotechnical, or environmental engineering. It can be tough to find colleges that offer a course in Geotechnical Engineering so you can just pursue on a traditional civil engineering degree programs with a major in earthwork and geotechnical engineering services. After acquiring such degree, the next step is to have a two to four year work experience through internship programs or job offers. Then after having work experience through internships or job offers in mining, geology, construction, or engineering a candidate can obtain a professional engineer license or (PE license). Engineers without PE can still pursue on a Geotechnical Engineering career but they will be supervised they can't work independently. That is why having a professional engineer license gives the engineers the advantage of finding many job opportunities in huge geotechnical engineering companies that can offer them high earning rates.

Dr Dilhani Kapu Arachchilage, from the School of Accounting, Finance and Economics at Edith Cowan University (ECU), presents her research "Key Contemporary Sustainability Issues and the Diversity of Responses of the Mining Industry in Australia" in ECU's 2012 Your Research In a Nutshell Competition. Dr Arachchilage's research focuses on sustainability development, which is a contemporary concept. She discusses research she undertook with ECU's School of Management. She discusses the popular definition for sustainable development, defined by the World Commission on Economic Development ~1987 as 'sustainable development is simply about meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of meeting the needs of future generations.' Dr Arachchilage sees sustainable development as an important issue as far as intra-generational equity is concerned and also as far as inter-generational equity is concerned. Dr Arachchilage's research looked at the 3 spheres identified as the key areas of sustainability development: environment, society and economy; supported by evidence in triple bottom line reporting (3BL) reporting and in GRI Initiative. Her study analysed 8 multinational companies who operate in Australia on the basis of 13 criteria across those 3 key spheres: - Environmental Performance: Biodiversity & Land Stewardship, Climate Change, Water Management - Social: Work & Community Safety, Stakeholder Engagement, HIV AIDS Reduction, Policies for Mine Lifecycle, Human Rights, Community Development - Economic: Supply Chain Management, Transparency & Accountability, External Performance Management, Sector Specific Global Initiatives For each criteria, Dr Arachchilage selected a number of indicators. As a result, her study examined about 67 indicators communicated in self reported sustainability reports, annual reports, media reports. Dr Arachchilage found that companies have selected different legitimation strategies in order to achieve social legitimacy and demonstrate they adhere to the social contract. While there were differences, there were 3 key legitimation strategies used by the multinational organisations she studied: - Disclosure of improvement - Alter public perception - Divert attention from issues and negative reports in the media For more information on Dr Dilhani Kapu Arachchilage see http://www.ecu.edu.au/schools/accounting-finance-economics/staff/profiles/faculty-research-scholar/dr-nirosha-dilhani-kapu-arachchilage ECU's Your Research in a Nutshell Competition is open to "early career" researchers at ECU. The dubious dealings of India's corporate colossus. When Four Corners travelled to India to investigate the activities of the giant Adani group, they soon discovered the power of the company. While attempting to film and gather information about Adani's operations, the Four Corners team had their cameras shut down, their footage deleted and were questioned for hours by police. The team were left in no doubt that their investigations into the Indian company triggered the police action. For months, Four Corners has been digging into the business practices of the Adani Group. This is the corporate colossus that plans to build Australia's biggest mine site. "I do know about Adani and that means thousands of jobs for regional Queenslanders ..." Annastacia Palaszczuk, Qld Premier The polarising debate around the proposed mine site in Queensland's Galilee Basin is often pitted as a simplistic jobs versus greenies argument. But there are influential figures in India who warn that Australians need to know much more about the Adani Group. "You know, the Australian politicians are obviously not properly briefed by their offices." Former senior energy official On Monday Four Corners examines the troubled corporate history of the Adani group in India revealing the findings of government investigations into financial and environment crimes. "The report found not accidental violations, the report found deliberate violations, wilful violations." Former Government Minister The program analyses the Adani Group's opaque financial operations and investigates the ramifications for their Australian operations. "What this tells you is that here is a business group that will not stop at anything to maximise its profits." Economist This investigation examines whether, in the rush to secure jobs and shore up the mining industry, Australian politicians have failed to properly scrutinise the company that's now hoping to receive a taxpayer funded loan of up to $1 billion for its project. "I think the Australian Government ought to do environmental due diligence, which it seems not to have done. It certainly has to do financial due diligence. Both due diligences are required, both for the financial side and from the environmental side." Indian politician Digging into Adani, reported by Stephen Long and presented by Sarah Ferguson,

The video demonstrates the process efficiences that an asset maintenance worker can gain by using an SAP enterprise asset management system that is natively geo-enabled to allow for map-based process execution. The underlying data set is a seamless integration of business data with process relevant GIS data. Up until now, GIS integration was achieved using bi-directional synchronization at the master data level. The new gold standard SAP is bringing to market brings business process relevant data from the GIS environment natively into the SAP business system landscape and more importantly allows for the extension of tables for any data object, master or transactional, to be extended with location attributes. Map-based business processes and location-based analytics on an integrated data set is now available to SAP business system users and mobile field workers. GIS engineering professionals can access the same integrated data sets via easy to consume REST services. The solution that makes this possible is called GEO.e and is available as an engineered service.

Over the past decade, Peter has been instrumental in the protection of large areas of land and seascape including the Nullarbor Plain, South Australia’s Offshore Islands, the Arkaroola Mountains, the Mawson Plateau and the declaration of the State’s 19 marine parks – Australia’s first representative marine park network outside of the Great Barrier Reef. In January 2016 Peter spearheaded the formation of the Great Australian Bight Alliance, a platform for people and organisations to stand together against fossil fuel mining in the Bight and prevent a Gulf of Mexico scale oil spill which would decimate the marine environment from Western Australia to Tasmania and beyond. “Peter Owen is in the front rank of ecological achievers world-wide.” “Thanks to Peter’s tireless campaigning over more than a decade, vast swathes of South Australia’s unique landscapes, islands and marine environments have been protected.” “This South Australian environmental champion is now determined to see the Great Australian Bight rid of the threat of fossil fuel mining. Peter is leading the campaign to drive BP, and other would-be environmental despoilers, out of the Bight’s wild and pristine waters once and for all”, Bob Brown said.

See how Olympus teamed up with the University of Tasmania to help facilitate a student field trip with an undergraduate third year class. The trip was lead by Dr. Anita Parbhakar-Fox, Research Fellow in Geoenvironmental Studies, ARC Transforming the Mining Value Chain Research Hub, and was focused on characterising mine waste materials, largely formed from gold mining, in order to identify if these waste materials have contributed to the negative health of some of the creek systems in the area and if so, how to rehabilitate and manage them better in the future. Anita's focus is on acid rock drainage and how mine waste is managed with the view to developing strategies to help the mining industry better characterise their future waste materials, in order to allow them to safeguard the environment from the impacts of mining. For the field trip, Olympus provided the University of Tasmania with a TERRA Portable XRD System, enabling Anita and the students to get an infield answer as to what minerals were being dealt with, allowing the team to understand the type of waste materials leeching out into the creeks, river systems and the environment. Dr. Michel Aubertin continues his keynote presentation at the Tailings and Mine Waste conference by completing his description of the hydrology and hydraulic conductivities of rock waste piles (the impact of inclining compacted layers). He describes what "diversion length" means in getting infiltration water directed to the non-reactive material at the edge of the waste rock pile. Benches and exposed terraces are the new concepts being explored. Cemented paste backfill (returning waste rock and tailings to underground mines) is discussed, as well as the effect of the filling rate. Aubertin explains: oxidation of tailings has shown that reactive tailings can be used as backfill; the geotechnical behaviour of sludges in impoundments has been described. He also discusses a variety of work on covers on top of tailings to prevent oxidation of reactive tailings (to eliminate acid mine drainage). He discusses the submerged water table model for long term storage of reactive tailings versus water cap tailings ponds and summarizes the projects ongoing at RIME. Dr. Aubertin's keynote presentation was a part of the Tailings and Mine Waste conference in Banff, Alberta on November 5, 2013.

Helen Caldicott, MD was among 45 leading scholars, authors and activists who convened at The Great Hall of Cooper Union, New York City, on October 25-26, 2014, for the public presentation: "Techno-Utopianism and the Fate of the Earth." Speakers discussed the profound impacts—environmental, economic and social—of runaway technological expansionism and cyber immersion; the tendency to see technology as the savior for all problems. For more info, see http://ifg.org/techno-utopia/program/ . ABOUT HELEN CALDICOTT: The single most articulate and passionate advocate of citizen action to remedy the nuclear and environmental crises, Dr Caldicott, has devoted the last forty two years to an international campaign to educate the public about the medical hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human behavior to stop environmental destruction. Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1938, Dr Caldicott received her medical degree from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1961. She founded the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at the Adelaide Children’s Hospital in 1975 and subsequently was an instructor in pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and on the staff of the Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Boston, Mass., until 1980 when she resigned to work full time on the prevention of nuclear war. In 1971, Dr Caldicott played a major role in Australia’s opposition to French atmospheric nuclear testing in the Pacific; in 1975 she worked with the Australian trade unions to educate their members about the medical dangers of the nuclear fuel cycle, with particular reference to uranium mining. While living in the United States from 1977 to 1986, she played a major role in re-invigorating as President, Physicians for Social Responsibility, an organization of 23,000 doctors committed to educating their colleagues about the dangers of nuclear power, nuclear weapons and nuclear war. On trips abroad she helped start similar medical organizations in many other countries. The international umbrella group (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War) won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. She also founded the Women’s Action for Nuclear Disarmament (WAND) in the US in 1980. Returning to Australia in 1987, Dr Caldicott ran for Federal Parliament as an independent. Defeating Charles Blunt, leader of the National Party, through preferential voting she ultimately lost the election by 600 votes out of 70,000 cast. She moved back to the United States in 1995, where she lectured at the New School for Social Research on the Media, Global Politics and the Environment; hosted a weekly radio talk show on WBAI (Pacifica) in New York; and was the Founding President of the STAR (Standing for Truth About Radiation) Foundation on Long Island. Dr Caldicott has received many prizes and awards for her work, including the Lannan Foundation’s 2003 Prize for Cultural Freedom and twenty one honorary doctoral degrees. She was personally nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Linus Pauling – himself a Nobel Laureate. The Smithsonian has named Dr Caldicott as one of the most influential women of the 20th Century. She has written for numerous publications and has authored seven books. Dr Caldicott currently divides her time between Australia and the US where she lectures widely. In year 2001, she founded the US-based Nuclear Policy Research Institute (NPRI), which became Beyond Nuclear. Currently, Dr Caldicott is President of The Helen CaldicottFoundation/NuclearFreePlanet.org, which initiates symposiums and other educational projects to inform the public and the media of the dangers of nuclear power and weapons. The mission of the Foundation is education to action, and the promotion of a nuclear-energy and weapons-free, renewable energy powered, world. The Foundation’s most recent symposium, co-sponsored by Physicians for Social Responsibility was held at the New York Academy of Medicine in March 2013, 2013. It was entitled The Medical and Environmental Consequences of Fukushima helencaldicottfoundation.org, download at http://www.totalwebcasting.com/view/?id=hcf. A book – "Crisis Without End" — emanating from the conference proceedings and edited by Dr. Caldicott was published by The New Press in 2014.

Alice Gorman is an archaeologist who specialises in the material culture of space exploration, from its origins in the 1930s through to the present. Her particular focus is orbital debris, or "space junk", including historic satellites. Her aim is to contribute a cultural-heritage perspective to international agreements on reducing the orbital debris problem. Other areas she has researched and written about include rocket launch sites, tracking stations, Skylab, and Russian landing sites on Venus. Alice is a lecturer in the Department of Archaeology at Flinders University, an Adjunct Fellow at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at ANU, and a member of the Space Industry Association of Australia.
