At this location the second largest nugget ever discovered in New Zealand was turfed up in 1917 by prospectors who were re-working old tailings from the 1860's gold-rush to Moonlight Creek. The 87.5 ounce nugget was named the 'Victory'. George Moonlight moved from the Victorian Goldfields (Australia) to New Zealand, then caught a steamer to the west coast of the South Island. George travelled from one gold rush to another, sometimes striking good gold, often not. His remains were found on the 16 September 1884 at Hope Bush (Cow Creek) having gone missing the year before on a lone prospecting trip, and is buried at the Nelson cemetery. Gold was discovered at a site, about 40 kilometres north-east of Greymouth, by prospectors called Cabet (surname) and 'Panama Bill', in 1868. They decided to name the new goldfield after George Moonlight. The creek and neighbouring terraces contained coarse dark nuggetty gold, sometimes impregnated with rose quartz (or rose tinted quartz). Many large nuggets have been found historically at the site. These include W.H. Jones 52 oz, George Fox 78 oz, William Coulter (known as Santa Anna) 47 oz, Mitchell and Russell (surnames) 79 oz, 60 oz, 40 oz, 2 x 33 oz, 22.50 oz and 20 oz, 'Flash' Barry (named after his spending spree in Melbourne from gold finds in the Victorian goldfields) 37 oz, Young and party several from 37 oz to 23 oz, Alfred Bliss 37 oz, Thomas Wood 36 oz, and much more that goes unrecorded. Retired geologist Jock Braithwaite when interviewed in part about Moonlight Creek, gives a fine definition of a nugget: ' A nugget is if you drop it in the dish, and it goes ding'. The site is well known amongst gold fossickers, lured by the romantic name, and the improbable promises of riches, from the many nuggets found here in the past. Gold prospecting requires a permit, but not in the seventeen public fossicking sites on the South Island (always check the Department of Mines website for the most up to date information). Prosecutions for mining without a permit do occur, as a property owner near the entrance of the Moonlight Road found in 2016. Non motorised fossicking is allowed, in designated fossicking sites, including panning dishes, and small scale sluicing. The thought here is families will come, with children given the opportunity to pan for gold in the creek, finding a few specks, then going home happy having spent the day in the beautiful New Zealand outdoors. Not everyone buys into this. Online forums note conflicts with people behaving badly, including a local rock club who arrived, and were threatened by a man clearing trees. Gold does funny things to people, and does not always bring out the best in human nature. Small nuggets have been reportedly found up to recent times. The best time to go is spring and early summer, after the winter floods have potentially washed gold nuggets to the surface. The best time to go to avoid people is mid-winter, when there is knee deep mud, constant drizzling rain, and sub-zero temperatures. The entrance road to Moonlight Creek can be found at a location called Atarau, on the main road on the northern side of the Grey River. Where the road turns sharply is a pull-out area with prominent 'Moonlight' sign, and minor gold mining equipment. The fossicking site is via a narrow gravel road heading north from here into the thickly forested hills for 10 kilometres (sometimes used by logging trucks), to a place now known as Anderson's Flat. The fossicking area covers 59 768 ha, beginning 1.32 kilometres above the bridge crossing. A gold location near Queenstown is also called Moonlight Creek. Prospectors rushed to the site after the 1868 find, many described as 'hatters', a gold mining term for an elderly prospector having gone slightly mad in the head from gold fever. The focus was on a gutter running parallel to the creek, and disappearing into a terrace. Much tunnelling into the terrace failed to locate the gutter extension. There were reefs at Moonlight Creek, but it appears not enough for large company involvement. Several pegged claims, and a couple started work, but amounted to little. The creek was pegged by dredging companies with a similar result. An 1875 report states by this stage many had left, with one store remaining. Coarse gold was also found at Caledonian Creek, 5 miles away: Baxter Creek for fine gold; and Garden Gully, all seeing small numbers of miners around the same time as the Moonlight Creek rush. Long (like all day) difficult (steep, muddy, wet etc) but beautiful walks and mountain bike trails eg. Croesus Track, can be taken through the lush temperate rainforest to the Garden Gully site, containing swing bridges, a 1905 era stamp battery, mining relics, and tin gold miner huts.

Check out the most amazing discoveries with a metal detector! This top 10 list features some of the most unique, valuable and mysterious ancient treasures found by metal detecting around the world! Roman Coins Detectorists spend most of their time searching fields and coming up empty, but occasionally they’ll find something that makes it all worthwhile. This is what happened to Dave Crisp, a hospital administrator. In 2010, he made an amazing discovery in a field near Frome, in the county of Somerset in England. Expecting to find the usual discarded metal objects, he started digging on a spot where his detector had signalled a strong reading, and to his surprise, he uncovered a large pot that contained a hoard of Roman coins. In total there were over 52,000 of them! 766 bore an image of Marcus Aurelius Carausius, who ruled over Britain between 286 and 293 AD. As the first leader to strike coins in the country, this was a particularly important find- one that was valued at over 1 million dollars. The coins were sent to the British museum where they were cleaned by archaeologists and put on display. 9. The Mojave Nugget While you may think that the gold in the California hills is long gone, this story shows that it’s still out there for those who look hard enough. In 1977, Ty Paulsen was using his metal detector in the Mojave Desert in Southern California when he discovered something people always dream of- a huge golden nugget. It turned out to be one of the largest ever found by a metal detector in the US, and weighed a massive 4.5 kg! Known as the Mojave Nugget, it was worth a whopping $200,000, and can now be seen on display at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Unsurprisingly, Paulsen has never revealed the exact location where found the nugget, but it’s thought to have been from the Stringer Mining District- an area that has been linked with large quantities of gold discovery over the years. Who knows, if you get out searching you might make the next big discovery there yourself! 8. Bullet in Dallas, Texas It’s not just valuable treasure in monetary terms that can be found with a metal detector, as Richard H. Lester discovered in 1974. He was in Dallas, Texas, searching for hits on Dealey Plaza when he found a bullet fragment. Now, this may not seem too out of the ordinary in the US, but this location just so happened to be about 500 yards away from the Texas School Book Depository, the location thought to have been used by Lee Harvey Oswald when he shot JFK. Lester kept the fragment for a number of years, but he handed it over to the FBI in 1976 as a part of ongoing investigations . They conducted tests on it, which they published the following year, and while the bullet had the same 4 grooves and right hand twist pattern as Oswald’s Mannlicher-Carcano, the lands were spaced further apart than they should have been- meaning it was unlikely from his gun. No-one suggested at the time that it could have been from a second gunman, but from a day out with his metal detector, Lester found himself in the middle of the greatest conspiracy ever. 7. Spanish Gold Chalice You don’t have to be an expert to make an amazing find, all you need is commitment and hard work. Mike DeMar took a job as a diver with a treasure hunting firm when he was 20 years old. Sounds like a great job! They were searching the Florida Keys for treasure from a sunken Spanish ship, the Santa Margarita, that had sunk over 400 years ago. The efforts of the company, Blue Water Ventures, had been on-going since 1980, and they had just begun looking at a new site. Within a couple of months of working there, DeMar was underwater and his metal detector pinged. He dug a bit with his hands and found what initially seemed like a piece of rock, but on closer inspection turned out to be a Golden Chalice. The ornate object, thought to be from around the time of the ship, at least 400 years old, was subsequently valued at over $1 million dollars- more than enough to warrant the rest of the day off and a toast of champagne with his new colleagues. The ship had sunk in a storm that scattered the debris in one direction, but another storm hit and scattered it all across the seabed. Following this discovery, Blue Water Ventures were confident that they’d make further finds- although as of yet they haven’t announced anything quite like the chalice. In the province of Benguet in northern Philippines, small-scale gold mining has been an important source of livelihood for centuries for indigenous communities. Artisanal and labor intensive, most of Philippine gold is still extracted with the simplicity of picks, shovels, human hands, and water; sometimes just besides large mining corporations. Men are thought of as the usual prominent actors in these communities. This documentary corrects this misimpression. Women miners are as essential to small-scale mining as the male workers. And unlike men, they must combine numerous daily responsibilities, in the household, the field, and the mine. However, these duties are balanced neither with compensation nor representation, in the family as well as in the community. This documentary is a story of the women miners of Itogon, Benguet who have moved mountains and have kept pushing on, how they have transcended the weariness of the body and the strictures of gender to live a life in their own terms and to unselfishly care for others.

SOURCE: SFGATE ✔When asking seasoned miners about this year’s so-called gold rush in Northern California, it can be a challenge to obtain trustworthy information. ✔“People who are smart don’t advertise what they’ve found,” said Bob Van Camp, better known as “Digger Bob.” “If you’re finding nuggets in an area, you don’t tell anyone about it; I’ve made that mistake before.” ✔After all, if you’re a professional miner looking to make your fortune, it’s the nuggets you’re after. Flakes and dust are milquetoast – and altogether worthless – compared to heavy chunks of the shiny yellow stuff. ✔Northern California was pelted with record rainfall this winter, and miners predicted that once all the water washed away, gold would be left in its wake. It appears that their predictions are panning out.“Folks are finding more gold — ‘flood gold’ — than usual this year,” said Diana Clayton, president of the Shasta Miners & Prospectors Association, which owns seven claims throughout Northern California and boasts about 350 members. ✔“Many of our members have been mining for decades,” Clayton said. “They really know the area. And they know there’s been changes.”Bryant Shock, co-owner of Gold Prospecting Adventures in Jamestown, Calif., estimates that there’s been a quarter increase in professional miners heading up north – a sure sign of a legitimate gold rush, he says. ✔So too, Shock has seen bigger chunks of the mineral unearthed this season than in recent years, and not just near streams and rivers. Heavy rainfall triggers slides, he explained, which create cutouts in the hills and deposit small bits of gold in gulches and ravines. ✔“I’ve heard of people walking along, kicking the dirt and finding a piece of gold,” Clayton added. She said a Shasta Miner recently uncovered a nugget half the size of her pinkie finger – that’s a biggie. ✔Clayton wasn’t about to let SFGATE in on the location of the prized chunk – “That’s like asking fishermen where they found their best catch!” – but she did mention the prospects surrounding the Oroville Dam, where miners believe gold is buried in the bedrock and dirt washed away when the spillway flooded. ✔“There’s good gold in that gravel,” said professional miner Mike Abernathy definitively. ✔ Aspiring miners should take pause before heading to Oroville with a pan in their hand and visions of riches on their minds. The region surrounding the spillway is completely inaccessible to the public, and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) vehemently refutes the treasure hunters’ chatter. The river channels affected by the flooding were extensively mined during the late 19th and 20th centuries, and having high flood waters would not expose additional gold,” a BLM spokesperson told SFGATE over email. ✔Nonetheless, a miner can dream — that’s what this gold hunting business is all about anyway. Odds of making a fortune in the goldfields of California are slim-to-none, but that’s not really the point. ✔Said Clayton, “It’s about having fun and maybe getting lucky.” SFGATE ARTICLE: http://m.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/A-mini-gold-rush-has-descended-on-Northern-11303830.php#1 DON'T YOU JUST LOVE MY SUPER AWESOME CHANNEL? The Gold Rush and the 1906 Earthquake: How they combined to create the breakthrough discovery of modern seismic science Presenter: Ross S. Stein, USGS Scientist Emeritus, Consulting Professor of Geophysics at Stanford University. - Accidents of Gold Rush merchant marine navigation transformed a seismic disaster into a seminal discovery and led to San Francisco's extreme liquefaction vulnerability today. - Just about everything that we love about the Bay area is brought to us by the faults. We enjoy their daily fruits and so must live with their occasional spoils. - No one knows when the next damaging quake will strike; we must frame the ‘payback period’ for seismic expenditures in terms of chance.

James Anderson, CEO of NuLegacy Gold Corporation takes us through their very exciting 108km2 Red Hill/Iceberg gold property in Nevada, close to Barrick’s Goldrush mining operations. NuLegacy has already carried out geological mapping and a geophysical survey of the property, and has drilled approximately 150 drill holes. The results of some of that recent drilling has thrown up some very positive news in terms of gold mineralization. The Carlin-type gold deposits found at Red Hill, whereby the gold is hosted in sediments, means the potential is there for very extensive deposits, hence the stepping-out of the drilling targets which James describes in the interview.

Hundreds of prospectors are here in the North Country looking to strike it rich. The modern-day gold rush is the result of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency mining operators setting up shop in Plattsburgh to take advantage of the city's cheap electric rates. The larger-scale mining operations use massive amounts of electricity to run their thousands of computers, and that fueled a spike in demand for electricity that drove up rates for other power customers in Plattsburgh. In response, the City Council has passed an 18-month moratorium on new cryptocurrency mining operations, and the New York State Public Service Commission has approved new power rates for mining operations to cover increased usage and costs. The moratorium has put the City of Plattsburgh in the national spotlight, which is what brought the PBS NewsHour and Economics Correspondent Paul Solman to the North Country recently to report on the impact this "gold rush" is having on the city. One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting or giving up when one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this mistake at one time or another. In his book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill tells the story of R.U. Darby's uncle catching gold fever and then moving out west to mine for gold. After weeks of labor, Darby's uncle did actually strike gold. Realizing he'd need machinery to actually extract the gold, Darby's uncle covered up the mine and returned home to maryland to get the necessary equipment. He returned to the mine, ready to become wealthy. His early strike led many to believe it might be one of the richest mines in Colorado. After mining several cars of gold, he eventually came up nil. The gold vein seemed to vanish just as quickly as he had found it. He continued digging, but to no avail. Eventually he quit digging and sold the mining equipment to a junk man. The junk man being wise decided to hire a mining engineer to take a look at the mine. Much to his surprise, the engineer told him that the Darby's had quit digging just three feet from the big score of gold. The junk man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up. If you know you are on the right path, NEVER give up! You will meet adversity and sometimes the road ahead will look bleak. But if you keep moving forward, you are sure to win. More gold has been mined from the thoughts of men than has ever been taken from the earth. My faith in Jesus Christ and his teachings motivate me to spread the same love He showed to people while he was here on earth. Ultimately, I believe that is the will of God for my life. ================= CONNECT WITH ME ================= Subscribe - https://goo.gl/6hfXzA Free Ebook - 30 Days To A Better Live - http://bryantchambers.com/free-ebook My Website - http://bryantchambers.com/ Support Our Mission - http://bryantchambers.com/partners Snapchat - @BryChambers Twitter - @TheSecondLetter

The Philippine deposits of gold, copper, chromium and nickel are considered as the 5th largest in the world. In 2009, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) estimated the country's gold reserves at 5,080,785,289 tons, based accordingly on the bureau's consolidation of resource inventory data supplied by mining companies. Forty provinces that have gold deposits practice different ways of mining gold that has been hand down from their ancestors since 3rd century. The Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) is very common to the rural areas of the Philippines because of the constant surge in the price of gold and easy way out of poverty. ASGM, which occurs in more than 70 countries, provides income to an estimated 10 - 15 million miners including 4.5 million women and 1 million children. The sector produces about 500 to 800 tonnes of gold per annum, which accounts for about 20 to 30 percent of the world's gold supply. Despite of this, destruction of environment and human health is at stake. The use of mercury (Hg) in ASGM posed a very dangerous threat to the health of the miners. It contains potent neurotoxin that impairs brain function, lowers intelligence and causes hearing loss. It also affects women in terms of miscarriages and birth defects. This element also destroys the environment by polluting freshwater bodies. Moreover, small scale mining practices such as the use of dynamite in making tunnels is one of the cause of landslides and degradation of the mountain. This photo story will focus on the environment and health issues pose by the artisanal and small-scale gold mining practices in the Philippines and it will also showcase how the players such as the miners, townspeople and the government are dealing with it. My objective in making this story is to educate the people about the reality that small scale mining is dangerous but a kind of livelihood that is essential in the national development of the country. It aims to call on the attention of the government to regulate and supervise this kind of livelihood for the benefit of the miners and the companies.

In April, 1769, the San Antonio sailed into the splendid harbor of San Diego. The ship had been sent out from Mexico and had a few friars on board, a detachment of soldiers and a handful of colonists. Father Junipero Serra, was on board who founded Missions from San Diego to Monterey. The domination of the Missions, of which there were twenty-one, lasted till 1822, when Mexico declared her independence from Spain. But during all this time almost nothing was known about the matchless and beautiful mountain country of California that we now hold so dear, until the discovery of gold. Once hearing of the great strike, by sea and land they flocked in untold numbers to the new El Dorado, a legendary place in South America where the streets were said to be paved with gold, and wealth and riches were to be had in abundance. They came from all parts of the civilized world to California to seek for gold. The way was difficult and the majority knew little of gold mining when they arrived. Most of the people who rushed off to California in 1849 and later, went to get a start in the world. Money was difficult to obtain in the East. Everybody wanted to make a big strike and get rich all at once. What actually happened was that a great many steady and honest men became comfortably well off from the gold they dug. Millionaires, however, were scarce. Others who came in '49 stayed on for decades and lived just as poor as they were on the day they arrived. Beginning in 1848, brave men from all over the world came to seek their fortune in California. The good, the bad, the rich strikes and the failures of men who tamed the west by the work of their hands. The history of California, may be told in a few words. The event which changed the history of California was the discovery of gold by James Marshall, in January of 1848, that find opened California to forge a new era for the western US.............................. In this interview, Ben Mossman, President, CEO, & Director of Rise Gold Corp, speaks with Natasha Frakes about how the company is preparing to start the first exploration project at the Idaho-Maryland Gold Mine since the 1950s. He explains how significant production never occurred on the property after the 1950s, but that it has a lot of opportunity to grow since it is located in a major gold district. It is also adjacent to the Empire mine, which produced around 6 million ounces of gold. The mine resides on private land, and the USGS was not allowed to survey in the 1940s — any record of geologic or exploration information has never been released. Rise only recently attained the historical documents related to the property. They have digitized the historical documents, and the exploration potential looks promising. Lastly, Ben mentions how the company is now in a unique position to re-develop the mine since the private land on which it sits does not requires exploration drilling permits, allowing for work to begin sooner rather than later. In 1857 Dog Town was the site of the first major gold rush to California’s eastern slope or the Sierra Nevada. Dog Town derived its name from a popular miner’s term for camps with huts or hovels. Ruins lying close to the cliff bordering Dog Town Creek are all that remain of the makeshift dwellings which formed part of the “diggins.” Dog Town is California registered historical landmark number 792. When the waters of Dog Creek showed color in the 1850s, miners rushed to the eastern Sierra. Dog Town was said to have produced the largest nugget ever found on the Sierras eastern slope. Dog Creeks gold deposits were not extensive and within a couple of years miners moved on to more exciting diggins at the new Monoville strike a few miles south. Dog Town was never very profitable, though it was significant as being the first eastern Sierra placer settlement. This brought attention to other areas such as Bodie, Aurora, Masonic, and Virginia City that proved to be more profitable.
