Can Nigeria's new tin mine heal ancient wounds? - BBC News

02:55
Environmental changes have caused tensions between settled farmers and nomadic herders in Nigeria to flare into ethnic conflict. But could working together to serve the demands of modern consumers heal ancient ethnic rifts, asks BBC World Service correspondent Stephanie Hegarty. As the sun sets over the stony hills of Jos, long-horn cows climb awkwardly down into a rocky gorge. They shimmy their bony shoulders, navigating a path worn into the stone over decades of this same grazing ritual. In this picture-postcard of serenity it's hard to imagine that until recently this community in central Nigeria was at war with itself. It's one of the world's most ancient conflicts. Tin ore mining changing the face of Ntungamo

04:17
Tucked away somewhere in a remote part of Ruhaama County in Ntungamo district are deposits of tin ore. Now, while local residents are making some money out of the mines, it seems their safety has been left to chance and even the district authorities are not keen on what goes on in the mines since they don’t get any proceeds from there. Inside Story - Nigeria's illegal miners

23:24
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe At least 160 people have died in Northern Nigeria, and this number is likely to increase as villagers continue to expose themselves to lead poisoning from illegal gold mining. The discovery of a gold deposit triggered a "gold rush" among impoverished farmers who dug up rocks by hand, unaware that the ore contained dangerously high concentrations of lead. Nigerian authorities have asked for assistance from various international agencies, including the World Health Organisation, to help contain the outbreak. But the Nigerian government has not stepped in to curb the illegal mining. It is reported that at least 111 of those killed were children, many of them under the age of five. Inside Story asks: Just why do these people run this risk? How does it impact the environment? And what can governments do to stop illegal mining? At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' Jos, Tin Mining and Environmental Neglect

06:25
Tin Mining in Jos started way back in 1902 and by the mid 1940s the British government formally entered tin exploration and mining in the region making it the number one foreign export from Nigeria. However, the discovery of oil in the mid 1950s and the subsequent shift in emphasis from tin mining left present day Plateau State with the huge challenge posed by degradation and devastation, with over 4,000 abandoned mining ponds dotting the state, neglected and have continually posed a serious threat to the environment and the inhabitants.

Nigeria, plateau: The Jos Plateau

Subscribe please!!! Nigeria is overall amazing!!! The people are the friendliest people in Africa. I experienced that first hand when I visited the Plateau state, Jos. I was receive as a Son. Jos Plateau, formerly Bauchi Plateau, tableland in Plateau State, central Nigeria, distinguished by its high bounding scarp and by bare grassland and embracing Africa’s chief tin-mining region. Its central area covers about 3,000 sq mi (8,000 sq km) and has an average elevation of 4,200 ft (1,280 m); the surrounding high plains often exceed 3,200 ft. The adjoining highland area on the east is occasionally designated the Bauchi Plateau. The plateau has a cool rainy climate and is the source of numerous rivers, including the Kaduna, Karami, and N’gell, which feed the Niger River; the Mada, Ankwe, Dep, Shemanker, and Wase, which flow to the Benue; the Lere, Maijuju, and Bagei, which supply the Gongola; and the Kano, Delimi, Bunga, Jamaari, and Misau, which intermittently nourish Lake Chad. Visit this wonderful city and you won't be disappointed. the weather in Jos is just the best as compare to Lagos!! Jos
Jos is a city in the Middle Belt of Nigeria. The city has a population of about 900,000 residents based on the 2006 census. Popularly called "J-town", it is the administrative capital of Plateau State. The city is located on the Jos Plateau at an elevation of about 1,238 metres or 4,062 feet high above sea level. During British colonial rule, Jos was an important centre for tin mining. In recent years it has suffered violent religious clashes between its Muslim and Christian populations in 2001, 2008, 2010, and 2011. This video is targeted to blind users. South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines

10:37
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. On the Durbar ground at Kaduna, a model village faithfully reproduced the every day life of the people of the Northern Region. The Queen was delighted by the typical game being played by a cheerful bunch of youngsters. Meanwhile the Duke inspected the products of village industries. Later, the Duke visited an open cast tin mine near Jos. In the Eastern Region at Enugu, the Queen and the Duke watched a performance of traditional dancing. Afghanistan explores mining opportunities

His optimism is based on reports that the country has huge reserves of natural resources - mostly copper. The US estimates that Afghanistan could be sitting on deposits worth one trillion dollars. That includes gold, iron ore, tin and tungsten. It also has deposits of uranium. And precious stones, including emeralds. But for now, agriculture remains Afghanistan's biggest export earner among its top sellers are fruit and nuts, tobacco, and wool. Jennifer Glasse reports on one potential mine in Kabul province that is also a training ground for Afghans in the mining industry. A powerful report filmed before the amnesty but with many participants sceptical the world remains as pertinent as ever. A fisherman pulls an empty net from waters that have sustained his family for generations:“"Because of oil spillage we can’'t get fish to sustain ourselves, let alone to sell”." Despite the huge oil industry 90% of locals are unemployed. Frustration led many to fight, decimating Nigeria's oil output. Now policy is being scrutinised - senior officials question the lack of development in the Niger Delta; “The way the oil companies have acted thus far is a little irresponsible”. An amnesty was offered to militants willing to disarm. Some accepted but many were sceptical; “Amnesty will not disarm the Niger Delta. It will only quell it”. Angola - the cancer of corruption | DW Documentary

28:26
Although Angola is Africa's second largest oil producer after Nigeria, the country is one of the world's poorest nations. [Online until: 02.12.2018] Angola’s billions of oil dollars mainly lined the pockets of the family of President José Eduardo dos Santos, who ruled the country for 38 years. Angola's new president, João Lourenço, has vowed to fight corruption and help the country's poorest. But can he keep his promise? Angola is Africa's second largest oil exporter. Angola began its economic ascent after its 27-year civil war came to an end in 2002, and in 2017, Luanda became the world’s most expensive capital city. But Angola is marred by economic division. Angola’s billions of oil dollars mainly lined the pockets of the family of President José Eduardo dos Santos, who ruled for 38 years. Luanda’s multiplying skyscrapers and glittering facades showcase the wealth of a small, rich elite. While 55 percent of people in Angola are still poor and live on less than one dollar a day. In August last year, President José Eduardo dos Santos announced he would not be seeking re-election due to health reasons. Like dos Santos, his successor, João Lourenço, belongs to the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). Lourenço has promised to fight corruption in Angola, and help the country’s poorest. Analysts have already raised doubts about his ability to make far-reaching change, however. Police currently stand accused of sending so-called death squads to kill young people in Luanda’s outskirts. Families are being relocated into tin huts, where they live under shocking conditions. And the country’s health care system is failing, as Angola’s child mortality rate climbs to one of the highest in the world. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. DRC authorities move to enhance effectiveness in the mining sector

02:47
Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have announced changes in the mining industry aimed at improving conditions for the final users of the country's minerals. One of them is about the establishment of economic zones around the country. The announcement was made at a mining conference in the DRC's Southwestern province of Lua-laba. It comes on the heels of a new mining code that raised taxes for mining firms. CGTN's Chris Ocam-ringa has that report. BOLIVIA: MINERS LAUNCH PROTEST AGAINST PLANS TO PRIVATISE TIN MINES

02:30
Natural Sound Bolivian miners and their families have launched a protest against government plans to privatise a lucrative tin mine. 25-hundred miners have occupied the Posokoni hill mine since Friday. Hundreds more have marched through the streets of Oruro, 260 kilometers (152 miles) from the capital, La Paz. Miners and their families chanted anti-government slogans through the streets of Oruro, Bolivia, on Saturday, demanding jobs at the lucrative Posokoni mine. The mine lies in the mineral rich Huanuni region which the government is planning to sell into foreign ownership. Wives and supporters donned helmets and took to the streets of the nearby town of Oruro in support of colleagues who have occupied the mine since Friday. Many criticised the government under President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada. An estimated 25-hundred miners staging the sit-in at Posokoni were unblocking shafts in order to gain access to the mineral deposits. Posokoni tin is rated among the best in the world and is therefore likely to attract much interest from foreign buyers. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The present government is intending to give away our riches to different foreign companies, and we don't want that. What we want is that they give these riches to us so that we can work them." SUPERCAPTION: Eduardo Mollinedo, member of miners' cooperative Miners in Bolivia work in cooperatives which are allocated specific mining rights by the state. Many of these mines have been exhausted and can no longer sustain the livelihoods of those people who work them. Without profitable land to mine, many families would be left with nothing. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "There are about 2,500 of us occupying, so that they allocate areas to us here in this place, Posokoni hill, where we get the tin for our livelihood." SUPER CAPTION: Eduardo Mollinedo, member of miners' cooperative The demonstration comes at a fragile time for President Lozada. Bolivia enters a general election on Sunday and Lozada is seeking a further term as president. Many Bolivians do not support his privatisation plans and there is public sympathy for the miners. Some of those living close to Posokoni have offered miners, who've come to protest from other regions, a roof over their heads while the demonstration continues. Investment Opportunities In Kaduna State

02:15
WHY NIGERIA – KADUNA STATE Kaduna is one of the major states in Nigeria. One etymological account states that Kaduna derived its name from the Gbayi ethnic group, which has lived there for centuries. Another source states that it derived its name from the Hausa word for crocodile, Kada. While the actual account can never be established, its diversity, geographic importance and rich history cannot be in doubt. Kaduna state produces cotton and peanuts (groundnuts) for export. Other cash crops include shea nuts, ginger, and peppers; vegetables grown in the riverine floodplains, brown sugar processed locally from sugarcane; onions; and soybeans. Cattle, chickens, guinea fowl, and sheep are raised, and hides and skins are ALSO tanned for export. Kaduna, the state capital, is Nigeria’s largest textile-manufacturing centre and has other major industries as well, including an oil refinery. Another industrial centre, Zaria, processes tobacco and cotton seed and manufactures textiles, bicycles, and printed matter. Traditional crafts, especially cotton weaving and dyeing (with locally grown indigo), leather processing, raffia weaving, and pottery designing (notably among the Gbari), also retain considerable economic importance. Tin mining continues near Kafanchan on the western edge of the Jos Plateau, and tantalite is also found there. SO WHY NOT INVEST IN KADUNA STATE TODAY?

Greenpower Energy Ltd: Guyana Morabisi Lithium,Tantalum,Niobium,REE Project

04:18
The Morabisi Lithium & Tantalum Project is located within the mineral-rich greenstone belt of Central Guyana approximately 150km SW of Georgetown. Guyana is the only English speaking country in South America and is renowned as a mining-friendly jurisdiction whose commitment to the industry is evidenced by the recent commissioning of three substantial gold mines (Guyana Goldfields’ Aurora Gold Mine, Troy Resources’ Kaburi Gold Mine and Goldsource’s Eagle Mountain Gold Mine). The Project area covers over 950,000 acres and is conveniently serviced by existing road and future planned power facilities, in addition to a number of local service towns within the Project area. Greenpower Energy Limited has executed a binding Heads of Agreement with Guyana Strategic Metals Inc. (GSM), to acquire up to a 74% interest in the Morabisi Project. GSM is a private Canadian company established by a group of mining professionals with significant Guyanese experience and in-country expertise. Over the past two and a half years, GSM has undertaken a substantial amount of work in terms of identifying areas within Guyana which are prospective for lithium and tantalum (including compiling, interpreting and undertaking desktop work in relation to historical information). Work on the Project has seen extensive sampling confirm high levels of Tantalum in addition to geochemistry results confirming accessary minerals consistent with LCT type Pegmatites with strong Rb, Cs, Be and Ta anomalies. Encouragingly, lithium bearing pegmatites have been identified in outcrop within quartz-microcline-tourmaline zone and on-trend with mapped LCT type Pegmatite veins/ring dykes identified on margin of batholith with over 40 km of combined strike length. The Phase II work has commenced at the Morabisi Lithium/Tantalum Project in Guyana in August 2017. Phase II exploration of the Morabisi Li-Ta-REE Project is designed to consolidate and expand exploration results from the Phase I exploration programme. In summary, exploration in the Phase I programme discovered Lithium occurrences of up to 1.04% Li2O associated with pegmatites at Turesi Ridge and very encouraging geochemistry results in two locations within 20km Ridge (East Camp and Banakaru). Lithium occurrences in rock chips and associated stream sediment sampling results warrant further exploration. The Phase II Morabisi Project exploration programme is designed to be carried out over a four-month period which includes the forthcoming dry season, from August 2017 to November 2017. Phase I was focused on mapping and sampling historically reported spodumene occurrences in the southern margin of the Morabisi Batholith. The first Phase will also revisit historical mining camps in the Robello and Rumong-Rumong rivers, where Coltan (Niobium and Tantalum) production has been undertaken in the past from alluvial deposits. These historical camps coincide with the location of several zoned pegmatite veins and dykes described by the British Guiana Geological Survey (BGGS). Greenstones adjacent to fertile granites are also key target areas for spodumene-bearing LCT pegmatites, and will be investigated as part of the phase 1 program. South of the granite contact is approximately 20 km of NW-SE orientated ridgeline hosted in greenstones (metavolcanics and metasediments), where additional LCT pegmatites are expected to occur. This area has seen minimal sampling, however minerals consistent with LCT pegmatites. Music: The Story Unfolds - Jingle Punks https://youtu.be/_8iypSHvdx0
