The Stormy
Southern Pacific's Lordsburg District Experience long freight trains, semaphore signals, rugged mountain passes and a proliferation of spring wildflowers along Southern Pacific's mainline in Southeastern Arizona. This stretch of track is hailed as one of the most scenic parts of SP's famous Sunset Route between the cities of Tucson, Arizona and Lordsburg, New Mexico. This exciting production was taped while Southern Pacific was in the middle of a major track expansion program. You'll see the line under different phases of construction as fifty miles of new track, several bridges and new signals were being added. Once the construction was done the semaphore signals came down, but we captured these historic artifacts while they were still in use. Big time mainline railroading takes place here and you'll see hot trains and lowly drag freights working hard across four mountain passes. Amtrak's Sunset Limited is observed, as well as many colorful locomotives on lease from other railroads. Steep grades, old coaling towers, a major construction project and the last days of the semaphore signals combine to make The Stormy an exciting program that you're sure to enjoy.
