I visited this deserted site on the fifth full day of my 2017 trip. Lithium is mined from this dry lake by pumping groundwater out from beneath the lakebed, and evaporating it in large, shallow ponds called "vats". Lithium mine near Tesla Gigafactory plans to break ground as global shortage rears head
Just 150 miles north of Tesla’s Gigafactory, a plan is brewing to a build a massive mine capable of growing the world’s lithium carbonate supply by a full 15% as early as 2022 and more than 20% by 2026, compared to 2018. Tesla could, in other words, find itself neighbors with one of the largest concentrated supplies of lithium carbonate in the world less than a decade from now. Known as Lithium Americas, the company behind the study has conservatively estimated that it could break ground on its prospective Northern Nevada Li2CO3 mine as early as the end of 2020 and ramp up to an annual output of 30,000 metric tons of the basic Li-ion battery precursor just 21 months after that. The mine’s output would then double by 2026, coming to rest at a maximum annual lithium carbonate output of 60,000 tons. Theoretical estimates conducted by a number of academic parties in the 2010s have shown that any given high-quality lithium-ion battery would be expected to require 2-3 kilograms of lithium carbonate per kWh of final capacity, although the absolute physical minimum is closer to 0.4 kg. To sustain Gigafactory 1’s 35 GWh 2018 production goal, that single factory alone could require between 60,000 and 85,000 tons of lithium carbonate annually to sustain its battery production operations alone. To put this requirement in context, the entire global supply of lithium carbonate is expected to peak at ~250,000 tons in 2018 after astounding YoY production growth of 21.5% from 2016 to 2017 – Tesla’s demands this year could thus easily swallow 25-30% of the entire global lithium carbonate supply. Despite those staggering numbers, Gigafactory 1 production is still expected to ramp (albeit based on optimistic 2016 Elon Musk numbers) as high as 105 GWh of cells and 150 GWh of packs annually by the time it is fully completed, likely a few years after the original 2020 estimate. Roughly 7 times the volume of Tesla’s 2018 production goals for the massive factory, sustaining that final volume of production (255 GWh annually) would literally require the global supply of lithium carbonate to grow by a bare minimum of 250% in less than half a decade. To reiterate, that is for a single Gigafactory, of which Tesla plans to construct several more in China, Europe, and elsewhere. Put simply, Tesla is going to need every ounce of lithium supply they can get their hands on, and Lithium Americas’ prospective Nevada offering could theoretically supplement that total required supply by as much as 10% by the mid-2020s. Tesla, however, is already hard at work attempting to secure a strong and satisfactory supply of lithium and other rare earth metals and materials required to produce premium-grade Li-on batteries. Tesla already has agreements to buy lithium from a somewhat smaller Nevadan effort from Pure Energy Minerals (phase 1 production NET 2020) and Bacanora’s Sonora Lithium prospect (NET 2020), lithium hydroxide (a product of lithium carbonate) from Australian upstart Kidman

Lithium itself is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. It is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. So this isn’t something you’d want just laying around your house. Especially if you have a toddler running around like I do... So Lithium is a metal so it must be mined right, like copper? Well, not exactly. It’s true lithium can be mined from rocks but mostly it’s found in brine pools. Lithium is also present in seawater but there aren’t any commercially viable methods of extracting it at this time As an aside when you see a meme floating around the internet showing a giant mine where lithium comes from, it’s a lie. As of 2017, most of the world's lithium production is in South America, where lithium-containing brine is extracted from underground pools and concentrated by solar evaporation. The standard extraction technique is to evaporate water from brine. Each batch takes from 18 to 24 months. With so much demand for lithium it’s a fair question to ask... Are Tesla and others doomed? Well…not really The US Geological Survey’s report for 2017 shows that "Worldwide lithium production increased by an estimated 12% in 2016 in response to increased lithium demand for battery applications. Production in Argentina increased nearly 60%, primarily owing to a new brine operation; the leading Argentine producer also increased production. A producer in Chile reported that its production rose by 20%. Two small Australian spodumene operations, one new and one inactive since 2013, planned to begin commercial concentrate production by year end. Worldwide lithium production capacity was reported to be 49,400 tons in 2015; capacity utilization was estimated to be 64% in 2015 and 71% in 2016. Based on average projections by producers and industry analysists of about 14% growth worldwide, consumption of lithium in 2016 is projected to be about 37,800 tons, up from 33,300 tons in 2015. So the trend is going up, but when you look at the overall picture you find that owing to continuing exploration, lithium resources have increased substantially worldwide. Identified lithium resources in the United States, from continental brines, geothermal brines, hectorite, oil field brines, and pegmatites, have been revised to 6.9 million tons. Identified lithium resources in other countries have been revised to approximately 40 million tons. Identified lithium resources in Argentina and Bolivia are about 9 million tons each and in major producing countries are Australia, more than 2 million tons; Chile, more than 7.5 million tons; and China, approximately 7 million tons. Canada’s lithium resources are about 2 million tons. Congo (Kinshasa), Russia, and Serbia have resources of about 1 million tons each. Lithium resources in Brazil and Mexico are approximately 200,000 tons each and Austria, and Zimbabwe have more than 100,000 tons each. Beyond just producing more lithium, companies like Tesla have focused on creating a closed-loop battery recycling program since as early as 2011. So while Tesla drivetrains are rated to go 1M miles, and the batteries will likely last to last north of 350K miles, once the cars do get turned in, Tesla isn’t going to just throw away those precious metals. If you’re an investor in companies reliant on lithium for their batteries such as Tesla, Apple, Google, or any other company making electronics today, you shouldn’t worry about the supply chain. Three Latin American countries contain over half of the planet’s lithium. And demand for the metal is intensifying. Lithium is a light metal used to make batteries. The salt flats of Chile, Bolivia and Argentina hold the bulk of the world’s supply. Now, the production of electric cars is making demand soar. The stunningly beautiful salt flats form a region that has become known as the Lithium Triangle. Demand for lithium is expected to triple by 2025. Companies and governments are eagerly looking to profit from the commodity. And the opportunity it could offer these countries is vast. But there are also environmental concerns and worries about the effect extraction could have on local indigenous communities. Americas Now Correspondent Joel Richards traveled to the region to find out more about what’s been called a white gold rush. Pure Energy CEO Provides an Update on the Clayton Valley Lithium Brine Project
Pure Energy Minerals (TSXV:PE) CEO Robert Mintak spoke about the Clayton Valley Lithium Brine Project, located in Esmeralda County, Nevada - halfway between Las Vegas and Reno. According to Mr. Mintak, "In 2014, Pure Energy was able to successfully raise close to $4 million, which allowed us to begin exploration work on the project. Early drill results have shown promising lithium concentrations ranging from 230 to 400 parts per million. Additionally in 2014, Pure Energy was able to add additional management roles to the company including a new COO, Dr. Andy Robinson, PhD, Geoscientist with a history in water project development; and Alexi Zawadzki as VP of Business Development. Additionally, we added Prof. LeeAnn Munk, a world-ranking geoscientist on lithium brine resources." In 2015, Mr. Mintak says, "Following up to our successful 2014 exploration drill program, the company has recently announced the commencement of our 2015 exploration program which will include additional drilling and geophysics toward a 43-101 inferred report. Additionally, the company is working with one of its strategic partners, Tenova Bateman, on lithium brine processing at a pilot plant in Israel." Mr. Mintak believes that what sets Pure Energy apart from other junior resource companies is that "we're well-financed" with a project located in a mining-friendly jurisdiction, Nevada.

A true energy metal company: LiCo Energy Metals is positioned to find lithium and cobalt resources
In this interview, Tim Fernback, President and CEO of LiCo Energy Metals, speaks with Hannah Bernard about the company’s various lithium and cobalt properties. Tim discusses how the company has two lithium properties in Nevada, which is the only producing region in North America for lithium. Moreover, the company also has properties in Chile, specifically in the Salar de Atacama, where they are one of four companies located in the area. Lastly, the company also has cobalt properties in Ontario, which is the second most favorable jurisdiction in the world for mining. Tim expands on the company’s exploration program in Ontario by noting that their drilling at the Teledyne and Glencore properties is almost complete. LiCo recently acquired a property from Glencore, which has been historically drilled in 1980, and they feel that with the combination of the two properties, they can generate promising resources. The company has had 32 holes drilled, and about just under 4,000m of drilling, and they’ve already started receiving results. Fortunately, the outcome has gone exactly as planned, with LiCo finding cobalt camp style mineralization in all of the drill holes drilled so far. The cobalt grade was as high as about 7.5% in the drill core. Tim looks forward to what the new year will bring as the company is looking to increase the size of its drill program at Teledyne and Glencore. LiCo’s (TSXV: LIC) properties are in great areas for finding resources and are well-structured to find cobalt and lithium. Investors should look forward to the year ahead, as this is a true energy metal company. Tesla Model 3 Needs More Lithium, Cobalt and Graphite
http://goldstocktrades.com/blog We are in the midst of summer doldrums, volumes are down across the board. Shorts are clearly in charge. Just look at top performing Tesla $TSLA which was taken down on bearish reports indicating potential production shortfalls. Remember the shorts have been squeezed from possibly $50, Tesla recently was trading close to $400 per share so its entitled to a pullback. Tesla may not be able to keep up with production targets if they do not secure supplies of lithium, cobalt and graphite. Most of this supply comes from South American sources which may be sold out past a certain date. Cobalt is coming from Congo where there are concerns of child slave labor in the mining areas. Graphite is mostly imported from China which is sable rattling in the South China Seas and their proxy N. Korea. Lithium and cobalt are in a strong price uptrend. Graphite like rare earths have been manipulated lower by the Chinese to prevent competition from N. American sources. Cobalts is breaking into new multi year highs and is really driving interest in the junior mining sector. I’ve been highlighting LiCo $LIC.V, First Cobalt $FCC.V and Cobalt Power $CPO.V which I own and they are website sponsors. Cobalt Power may have one of the first drill results in cobalt sector to announce to public coming out shortly which I am quite excited about. Lico $LIC.V $WCTXF has a lithium project in the Atacama in Chile next to the big boys plus an exciting cobalt property in Ontario which may get some news. Lico has attracted some top notch board members such as former management of companies like BC Hydro and Truegold. First Cobalt $FCC.V $FTSSF is halted as they are merging into possibly the top pure play cobalt player in Canada with an all star roster of mining executives. These three companies above are very active and could announce significant developments concurrently with the Tesla Model 4 release which could be a major disruptor to the automobile industry as the Iphone was to the cell phone industry. We saw it with cell phones and internet, now it is the computerized self driving electric car. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of us are driving electric cars by 2030. As the Tesla Model 3 is released don’t be surprised to see an uptick in interest in the lithium, cobalt and graphite sector. In addition to the Model 3 news, major car companies such as Volvo, Volkswagon and BMW are committed towards electric motors. Volvo wants to be totally electric in two years. This is a huge news item which most investors are ignoring. They need to realize this transition of auto companies could create a major shift in the supply demand curve. Keep a close eye on China and its proxy N. Korea. There is a lot of tension in the South China Seas and this could boil over into the critical rare earths and graphite space needed desperately for renewable clean energy. Remember electric vehicles use a lot of graphite and rare earths. Now is the time to look at the rare earth survivors such as Ucore and Commerce. Notice Quest has gone bankrupt. Molycorp’s Mountain Pass is being stolen by the Chinese right under our noses. This is a travesty. Americans should write to their politicians and state they don’t want their mining and manufacturing industries sent overseas. We can mine rare earths, lithium, graphite and cobalt right here in North America. The rare earth market could bounce after the Molycorp and Quest bankruptcies. Things could get volatile with Trump and international relationships in Asia. Notice the major move in palladium in 2017 yet? Its outperformed mostly all asset classes.
