Mt. Moss Mining

01:01
Mt Moss Mine is the largest magnetite deposit on Australia's east coast. The mine is situated in the old Ewan mining field, 110km west of Townsville in North Queensland, which saw pioneer Australians explore and mine rich copper and tin in the area from 1890 until the 1930's. Since 1958, various international mining companies including BHP and MIM have explored the area for copper, lead, zinc and tin mineralisation. In 2005 Curtain Bros bought from Jervois Mining NL (a small, publically listed exploration company) mining lease ML10171 and set up a subsidiary company called Mt Moss Mining. From acquisition, Curtain Bros commenced the construction of site workshop facilities, offices, laboratory, camp and accommodation facilities as well as 50 km of roads to a standard suitable to haul large tonnages of iron ore product. During the construction phase, over 30,000 meters of combined percussion chip and diamond core drilling was completed to delineate a magnetite iron ore resource in excess of 20Mt. The potential for significant additional resources containing copper and zinc credits is very high. Mining commenced from the Willett's Knob, stage 1 pit in 2007. A stage 2 pit cutback commenced in November 2007 and was completed in early December 2008 to a depth of approximately 70 meters. Mount Moss Mining is processing stockpiled magnetite ore through two separate benification circuits to produce two saleable product streams. The mine employs over 75 personnel working across all mining areas including mobile and fixed plant operators, and mechanical and electrical trades, geology, mines engineering, metallurgy, administration, catering and housekeeping.

Illegal Chinese Gold Mining in Ghana

02:18
The Chinese regime is Africa's largest trade partner and miners in countries such as Ghana increasingly rely on Chinese equipment and capital. But there are concerns that Chinese entrepreneurs are involved in illegal mining activities beyond the view of Ghana's regulatory regime, and locals say their share of the profits is shrinking. Foreign gold seekers are nothing new in Ghana, but a new wave of prospectors are now making their presence felt, this time from China. Ghana's laws say foreign companies are only allowed to work on large, open-pit operations. But campaigners say Chinese entrepreneurs are also illegally controlling small-scale operations behind the scenes, typically through a local intermediary. Ghana is Africa's second largest gold exporter. More than 100,000 Ghanaians work in these small, dark mine shafts. Together they produce about 20 percent of the country's gold. The Chinese regime is Africa's largest trade partner with two-way volume reaching $100-billion U.S. dollars in 2010. Some welcome the Chinese because they bring necessary capital and equipment. But some workers in Ghana's pits accuse Chinese entrepreneurs of increasing their share of local profits. [Joseph Ben, Former Illegal Miner]: "The Chinese people bring their equipment which makes the work easy for you and they know the work too, but when you are sick they don't pay your hospital bills you have to use your own money." Mr. Ben says he used to work in a Chinese run mine where he was paid 80 Ghana cedi, or about $50 U.S. dollars, per month. Now he's paid twice as much in a mine owned by Ghanaians. Last month the police arrested 25 Chinese miners said to be working illegally around the village of Wasa. The association of communities affected by mining says Chinese companies have built networks of local people, including miners, local chiefs and security agents, to give them cover for illegal mining. Small-scale Gold Mining: Chinese Operations in Cameroon

21:20
Ein Film von Katja Becker und Jonathan Happ (2016) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem vom BMBF-geförderten Forschungsprojekt AFRASO –"Afrika's Asiatische Optionen" (http://www.afraso.org). Wissenschaftliches Konzept: Diderot Nguepjouo und Jürgen Runge Over the last decade, Cameroon’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector has gone through several mutations thanks to the new policy which has attracted various international investors from Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. As from 2012 on, the involvement of Chinese entrepreneurs has dramatically accelerated the pace of progress in the sector. Some of them switched from other economic activities they were already pursuing in the country whilst the others, mostly mining professionals, moved from the Ghanaian gold mining business to Cameroon. Chinese entrepreneurs have gradually become main players in the gold mining operations, recording successes, while other actors, e.g. Koreans, went bankrupt and in many cases have sold their business capital to Chinese without any competition. Through taking over those projects coupled with their greenfield mining initiatives, Chinese investors has gained the image of successful businessmen in the sector. As a result, their working style and techniques are gradually being adopted by almost all local and foreign investors. This is the context that spurred AFRASO researcher Diderot NGUEPJOUO together with the filmmaking crew UJUZI travel to Cameroon and shoot the 3rd AFRASO documentary. The film follows several active players in the major segments of the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) in Cameroon: a Chinese investor; local entrepreneurs (member of Parliament, businessman, and middleman); workers, small operators in “Nguéré”, civil servants as well as the affected communities on their working sites. The film reveals that political elite and administrative authorities appear to favour the involvement of Chinese operators because they consider it beneficial to the State and local entrepreneurs (service providers, middlemen…), while traditional rulers and business people who did not partner with Chinese are less supportive of this presence. Furthermore, the positive impacts resulting from gold mining are reported to be enjoyed by Chinese investors and some local entrepreneurs while the communities are left with the impact of these activities such as land disturbance, water pollution, diseases... All in all, the movie tries to put forward the ongoing dynamics and contradictions that are taking place in the Cameroon's gold mining.

Ibrahim Mahama Chairman Engineers and Planners Speaks on Banking

05:27
MEET IBRAHIM MAHAMA - Founder Engineers & Planners. In 1997, with the equivalent of Five Hundred Pounds (£500) in his pocket, 26-year-old Ibrahim Mahama returned to his native country Ghana, after his sojourns in the United Kingdom, to set up a Heavy Duty equipment rental company- Engineers & Planners. Soon, he noticed a business opportunity when the Ghanaian government at the time, decided to privatize all the state owned mining companies. Mr. Mahama reworked his business model to take advantage of the privatization drive of the government. Today that Five Hundred Pounds Sterling rental company is now worth more than Five Billion dollars in both Assets and Human Resource thanks to the leadership of Ibrahim Mahama. “I dropped out of school” he says with pride but explains, “not every one of us is cut for success in the classroom,” adding “this doesn’t mean that I am not in favor of schooling. School is very important and I will encourage every young man to aspire to the highest level in terms of education”. His company has built a huge portfolio in Ghana, working for mining giants such as Golden Star Resources and Goldfields Ghana. The small equipment rental company, which he started in 1997, grew organically into major equipment rental firm, in competition with other local and international equipment rental companies. In the face of all the competition and challenges in terms of finance, Ibrahim’s company braved the odds and today is an A-Class mining contracting firm competing in the midst of international Contract Mining companies who had access to cheap finance and were preferred partners to the mining concession owners who were foreign Direct Investors (Multi-national Companies). Engineers & Planners excelled in the area of contract mining and currently has elbowed out the multinationals. Currently his company employs close to three thousand workers working on both Damang and Tarkwa mines owned by South African mining giant Goldfields and other satellite projects across the country including road construction, earth moving and civil engineering works. Ibrahim Mahama’s impact is not only limited to Ghana, his company E&P was the first to open up the Liberian economy to commercial mining activities after over two decades of civil war when they won the contract to mine the iron ore concession for Arcellor Mittal in Yekepa Liberia. The Liberian contract provided employment opportunities for both Liberians and other African nationals who were employed for the project, in addition to contributions to the Liberian economy in terms of payment of taxes and import duties. The transfer of knowledge through the Arcellor Mittal contract, today, has created the opportunity for Liberia to have access to top level and experienced human resource for their extractive industry, which eventually is benefitting the economy of Liberia. It can be said at the time E & P entered into Liberia, majority of the working force had not ever worked before, as those who were working just before the civil war, were now past their prime- well over 60years. The onus thus fell on E&P to train the Liberian youth in their 20’s and 30’s and gave them the opportunity to have formal work experience before other multinationals started entering Liberia. Mr. Mahama is involved in other business interests. He is the owner of Man Bosch Ghana Limited, (MBG) a company representing MAN DIESEL Trucks in Ghana. He is currently working on a cement producing company expected to provide employment opportunities for several thousands of Wholesalers and Retailers across Ghana and possibly the West African sub-region. The cement factory has a capacity of 2.6 Million Tonnes per annum and this is the highest single cement facility in Ghana, which has many advantages in terms of location, port facilities and deficit in marketing demand. Currently the market demand of Portland cement is about 7 million tonnes and what is produced and imported is about 5 million tonnes and would be greater looking at the housing and infrastructure deficits that Governments wants to bridge. Ibrahim Mahama can be described as a quintessential entrepreneur who believes in the capabilities of the African and works with the mindset of empowering the Ghanaians and Africans.
Resolute Mining resolute in becoming a multi-mine global gold producer

08:12
Resolute Mining Ltd (ASX:RSG) managing director and chief executive John Welborn updates Proactive Investors on the Africa-focused gold mining company’s operations. One of two projects currently operating and producing gold, the Syama Gold Mine in Mali, is progressing towards the goal of becoming a world-class sub-level cave operation. "We're currently operating two processing plants there: an oxide plant which is fed by satellite open pit mines, and the large-scale historic sulphide circuit which [is] processing stockpiles while we build an underground mine. That underground mine is due to start sub-level caving in December of this year," says Welborn. The company’s second gold producing asset, the Ravenswood Gold Mine in Queensland, Australia, has recently gained final approvals for an expansion that should take annual site production beyond 120,000 ounces, over a mine-life of 13 years or more. At the historic Bibiani Gold Mine in Ghana, a second feasibility study is in its final stages, and should be released before the end of this quarter. Resolute Mining will then make a development decision. Exploration around existing assets designed to enhance operations is ongoing. Meanwhile, the company has made a number of strategic investments in junior gold miners and select potential development plays. Welborn explains, "we're establishing a portfolio of gold companies that we think will add a pipeline of growth to Resolute shareholders... it's a really strong end to the financial year for Resolute.”

On top of the staff reduction, another 1,297 employees have been reskilled and moved to other mines within the company. The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, AMCU, has expressed its approval of the restructuring process, but said it would have been more content knowing no jobs were lost instead. Internet Scamming in Ghana

20:31
Fraudsters in Ghana show us how they use internet scams to steal thousands of dollars from unsuspecting victims all over the globe. -- While Nigeria's 401 scammers may have written the book on West African internet fraud, their shtick looks like Compuserve compared to what's going on in Ghana. Unsatisfied with the meager winnings from emailing thousands of random Westerners in hopes of convincing one poor sap they're the treasurer of the Ivory Coast, Ghana's scammers decided to stack the odds in their favor the old-fashioned way—witchcraft. Taking a page from cyberpunk, traditional West African Juju priests adapted their services to the needs of the information age and started leading down-on-their-luck internet scammers through strange and costly rituals designed to increase their powers of persuasion and make their emails irresistible to greedy Americans. And so "Sakawa" was born. Now not only is Sakawa Ghana's most popular youth activity and one of its biggest underground economies, it's a full-blown national phenomenon. Sakawa has its own tunes, clothing brands, Sakawasploitation flicks, and even a metastatic backlash from Christian preachers and the press. When we were in Accra over the summer it was impossible to walk more than 10 feet without seeing the word Sakawa in blood-red Misfits letters on a poster or tabloid, often accompanied by bone-chilling horrors of the photoshopped variety. The government is freaked out because Sakawa is threatening Ghana's business reputation, the Christians are freaked out because they're losing money to the Juju priests, the press is freaked out because being freaked out is what sells papers, and the public is freaked out because their government, preacher, and media are all telling them they should be. All the while the Sakawa boys are living the high life and racking up debts to the spirit world, just waiting for the axe to fall. The new scramble for Africa’s resources – looting or development?

01:01:43
The outside world has its eye increasingly set on Africa. Farming lands and new discoveries of oil, gas and minerals have made the continent interesting again – not only for former colonial powers and the United States but also China and India. Under the motto “trade no aid”, Africa’s poor are to be lifted by trade rather than aid. Meanwhile, history shows that rich natural resources easily become a curse. Instead of creating jobs, better education and healthcare, large export revenues often lead to corruption, conflict and to countries becoming dependent on raw materials. Who are the winners and who are the losers in the new scramble for Africa’s resources? Who ensures that the fortunes will benefit the citizens themselves, and what is required for a broad community development? These issues were discussed at a live-streamed panel debate in Lund on 10 November. Panellists included: Margaret C Lee, leading Africa researcher and author of “The 21st Century Scramble for Africa” Nnimmo Bassey, was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 2010 for discoveries about the humanitarian and ecological disaster as a result of the Nigerian oil industry. Erik Esbjörnsson, Africa correspondent for Dagens Nyheter Moderator: Andreas Ekström, journalist Introduction by Ellen Hillbom, Africa Researcher at Lund University

DISCUSSION: Illegal mining, Zama-Zama miners with David Van Wyk

08:31
The deaths of 14 people believed to be illegal miners in Benoni, east of Johannesburg and the ongoing case in the Virginia, Free State involving 22 illegal miners and another illegal mining incident in Mpumalanga have once again brought illegal mining activities into the spotlight. The arguments in Virginia included submissions that illegal mining had led to some mining companies shutting down operations. David Van Wyk is with the Bench Mark Foundation and he has done research into illegal mining, otherwise called the Zama-Zama business. For more news, visit: http://www.sabc.co.za/news
