The Tennessee Titans are on the cusp of becoming a playoff fixture. After tying for the AFC South lead with a (9-7) record in 2016, the Titans lost out on a tiebreaker to the Houston Texans.
As a result, the Titans missed the postseason for the eighth consecutive year.
A big reason for their shortcomings came in Week 16, when Quarterback Marcus Mariota fractured his fibula , when he got sacked during a 38-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Mariota threw a season-low 20 passes in his final game of the season. He finished with a completion % of 61.2 . Mariota also threw 26 touchdown passes and 9 interceptions during last season.
More importantly, the offensive line kept Mariota relatively healthy until his final play of the season, as he was only sacked 23 times.
Offensively, the Titans were capable of having big days. Mariota produced 4 games with at least 3 touchdown passes. However, he also played 4 games without a touchdown pass.
Although Mariota came into the NFL as a dynamic runner, he only rushed for 2 touchdowns last season. He carried the ball 60 times, gaining 349 yards for a 5.82 average.
In all, the offense averaged 23.8 points per game, and the Titans didn’t surpass the 20-point mark in 5 of their 7 losses. Now, they need to become more consistent in each and every game.
The Titans concentrated on revamping the defense with some new talent from various AFC teams. They signed cornerback Logan Ryan to a 3 year deal worth $30 million.
Ryan spent his first 4 NFL seasons with the New England Patriots, winning 2 Super Bowl titles. He comes to the Titans with 13 interceptions and 4 forced fumbles. He also recorded a career high 73 tackles in 2016.
Strong safety John Cyprien is also a key addition to the Titans’ secondary. Although he hasn’t been a huge playmaker with just 2 interceptions in 4 seasons, Cypriens comes to the Titans as one of the best tacklers. He recorded 96 stops for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.
The defense also added defensive tackle Sylvester Williams in the middle of the front 7.
Offensively, the Titans biggest acquisition is wide receiver Eric Weems. He is also the oldest addition to the team thus far. Therefore, Weems should add some veteran leadership to offense.
The defense lost Jason McCourty, Al Woods and Sean Spence. That means the Titans have to replace players on all 3 levels of the defense from last season.
Meanwhile, the offensive line will also have new look to the 2017 season.
Right tackle Byron Bell and guard Chance Warmack joined Bryan Schwenke in the offensive line defections. They each signed one year deals elsewhere.
Wide receiver Kendall Wright is also gone from the team. His receptions dropped from 57 in 2014 to 29 in 2016.
The Titans are in line to make the playoffs this season. However, they might have to settle for winning the AFC South. Due to so many tough teams around the conference, those Wild card spots are going to be tough to come by.
Additionally, Mariota needs to remain healthy all season or the Titans will have no chance.
They have the offensive line intact. They drafted some high profile skill position players over the last few years, and now the defense should be ready to step up to the challenge of earning a playoff berth.
With a very competitive division and conference the Tennessee Titans will need to win their division to have any playoff hopes. The number at 8.5 is spot on, We’ll lean over with a 9 win season , but missing the playoffs
