MINING JOBS TV Episode 2: Mining Career Opportunities Welcome to the second episode of Mining Jobs TV. My name is Matt and I will be talking about career opportunities that are available in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. We understand that many people these days are looking at getting ahead financially and seeking career changes - for that reason mining is a great opportunity for many people, regardless of your skills and experience. You could be forgiven for thinking that mining is a fairly specialised profession and that to get a job in a mine, you need to have worked in one before. That may sometimes be the case, but as you'll soon discover, not always. The reality is that across the board, there are probably just as many jobs that DON'T require experience as those that do. Obviously, there are some positions that require certain levels of experience or qualifications that you may not possess. For example, you can't go from being a builder's labourer to a Principal Mine Geologist overnight. And it's highly unlikely that you'll be expected to progress from working in an accountant's office one day, to setting the explosives in an open cut coal mine the next. Keep in mind that the demand for people, both skilled and unskilled is huge, and opportunities exist across all levels. It is in every respect a jobseekers' market. You just need to know what you're looking for, and more importantly, how to look for it. In the last year, mining and resources jobs in Australia grew by an impressive 13% - a figure unmatched by any other job sector. By location, jobs have grown by 5% in Western Australia, 21% in Queensland and a whopping 42% in New South Wales. Simple mathematics will tell you that there are just not enough qualified or experienced people to fill those numbers. If you want to work in resources, it pays to be resourceful. A great way to start is by looking for jobs in mining that relate somehow to what you're doing now -- anything from cleaning to hospitality or admin people have all got skills the mining companies are looking for. The Seek.com.au website will actually help you do it. You start by selecting 'Mining, Resources & Energy' in the Classification box and then you can drill down from there, looking at current jobs that appear for your perusal. You will see that there are many skills and qualifications that are very transferrable from other industries to mining. Mines need engineers, plumbers, electricians, builders, boilermakers, welders, mechanics, IT personnel, HR people, medical staff, logistics experts, heavy vehicle drivers to name just a few. Australian mining companies employees people across a broad range of areas from unskilled labourers to mining engineers. There are also opportunities in administrative, human resources and management positions together with numerous trade related opportunities such as Trades Assistant, Boilermakers, Carpenters, Welders, Electricians and Plumbers. But what if you don't have any skills or experience that relate to the mining industry? Fear not - there are still loads of entry level mining for you to choose from and you'll find many of them on the SEEK website. You'll soon discover that mines need a whole host of people like drillers' offsiders, administrative assistants, cooks and catering staff, cleaners and maintenance staff, childcare workers and general labourers. And many of these positions require no experience whatsoever. All you need to bring is a sense of adventure, flexibility and a willingness to work. As you have probably heard, mining jobs are achievable yet very competitive. Now look there are two types of people in this world, those that organize things and the rest of us are just kind of do what they say but if you think you're good with people and you like organizing things maybe human resources could be a career for you. We're here at the Department of Mines to find out what it's all about. You hear the term human resources all the time but it's a pretty obscure and confusing job title. All i know is that it involves dealing with lots of people which is why I'm here at one of the biggest people machines in WA, the Department of Mines and Petroleum to find out exactly what a human resources officer does. Great to meet you Alyce. Well let's start with everything, I need to know if you're working in Human Resources what do you do? So pretty much we work with the employees right through from application to retirement and that could be anything from looking after their safety to training to providing wellness programs or diversity events. So you follow someone's career basically from the beginning right through the end. Yeah while they're in that specific organization. Sure and ok well let's start at the beginning how you came to be in the job. What was your particular path? Where did you study how are you here today? I studied the ECU I studied a bachelor of business and I did a major in human resource management and from that I engaged in lots of different work experience, internship placements I put my name on the templates here at this department and they asked me to come back and work on my initial project. Okay, talk me through a day a typical day of yours when you turn up what do you get up to? First thing I do is look at my emails to make sure there's no employees that are concerned about any issues. That's the first thing you need to get to you need to reply to them quickly. I also because I'm the wellness coordinator I do a lot of events and presentations so i might be one day I might be booking in a presentation I'm checking that staff have RSVP'd properly that kind of thing. We also organize occupational safety and health inductions for new staff so i might be sending out invites. Okay, it's time for you to give us the edge. Can you do that? Absolutely question number one, just quickly from school to what you do now what's the process? Definitely finish high school and an excellent way to increase your opportunities then enroll in either a human resource management course at there's a number of different institutions that offer it or you could do a degree in business and get a a major in human resources or even a psychology degree. Question 2 if I want to be really successful in human resources what characteristics do i need? Definitely a good people person, you need to love working with people, also excellent communication skills that's a big one you need to always be talking with people and also being able to say the same thing to everybody being consistent with your advice to give throughout the organization. And question number three, if you could have done one thing differently but still end up exactly where you are today what would you have done there? Good question i'm quite happy with the path I took but I will say definitely being a little bit more comfortable about asking questions and seeking advice. More information about the video content bellow: 1. Formerly known as Pleasant Island, Nauru is a small, oval-shaped island. Unlike the other Pacific countries, Nauru doesn’t have hundreds of islands, it’s just the one. And it takes about half an hour to cross the entire country! 2. Due to non resemblance of the language of Nauruans, their exact origin is not confirmed. 3. The district of Yaren is Nauru’s largest community and the closest thing the island has to an official capital. The island’s police and earth stations, administration offices, parliament house, and only international airport are all situated here. In 2011, Yaren’s entire population was no more than 750 people. 4. Moqua Well and Moqua Caves-Many locals still refer to this underground lake as a well because it was Nauru’s main drinking source during WWII. Although the lake and its namesake caves stand next to Nauru International Airport, they remain difficult to find without assistance because a fence has blocked access ever since a drunk man accidentally drowned there in 2001. The ancient limestone caves and cliffs stand mere steps from Nauru’s national parliament buildings in Yaren and were both named after the town’s original name. 5. Nauru was first inhabited by Micronesian and Polynesian people at least 3,000 years ago. There were traditionally 12 clans or tribes on Nauru, which are represented in the 12-pointed star on the country’s flag. 6. Before Christian beliefs arrived and mining destroyed Topside, Nauruans believed in the primordial establishment of the island by two spirits that came from Kiribati and were manifested in two rocks, one on either side of Topside. Those rocks have disappeared, along with many of the other useful aspects of Topside. Buada lagoon is another site of spiritual strength for some Nauruans. 7. In this emotional tale of Saul Indian Horse, Richard Wagamese tells the realistic story of a man whose life is drastically changed by one of Canada's most painful histories. When Saul was a child he was taken away from his family and forced into an Indian Residential School where he witnessed and experienced unimaginable abuses at the hands of the school's educators. In spite of the harrowing atrocities, it is at the school that Saul discovers his love of hockey, a game that, for a short time, serves as a means of escape. Saul's talent leads to a draft with a minor league team and a spot on Team Canada during the 1972 Canada-Soviet Summit Series. However, as Saul grows into a man, he struggles with racism and alcohol addiction. Saul's tumultuous adulthood eventually leads him back to his roots, where he confronts his past and begins a new journey towards healing. Richard Wagamese is an Ojibway author from the Wabaseemoong First Nation in Northwestern Ontario. He is the author of several fiction and non-fiction works including For Joshua: An Ojibway Father Teaches His Son, Runaway Dreams, and Indian Horse. Wagamese has also been a journalist and, in 1991, became the first Aboriginal Canadian to receive the National Newspaper Award for Column Writing. His most recent novel, Indian Horse, was chosen as the winner of First Nation Communities Read, and is on the Globe and Mail's bestseller's list as well as the Canadian Booksellers Association's bestseller's list. Among his awards, Wagamese's memoir One Native Life was listed as one of The Globe and Mail's 100 Best Books of 2008. In 2010 he accepted an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Thompson Rivers University. Wagamese currently lives just outside of Kamloops, BC with his wife, Debra Powell, and Molly the Story Dog.

A woman caused quite a scene on board a flight because of a crying baby, but the tables have turned. Susan Peirez was placed on leave during an investigation. “I work for the governor," she claimed as she was caught on video yelling at a crew member aboard the Delta flight. It turns out the woman who got all sorts of attention for her obnoxious behavior works for the New York State Council on the Arts. Peirez's name and image have been removed from the council's official website.

The Maritime Union of Australia is demanding an investigation into Alcoa’s actions after the American-based miner forcibly replaced Australian seafarers with foreign workers. On January 13, at 1am five crew members aboard the Alcoa-owned vessel – the MV Portland – were woken by up to 30 security guards and intimidated into leaving the vessel following a 60-day dispute. The Portland had plied the trade between Western Australia and Victoria for more than 27 years. MUA Assistant National Secretary Ian Bray said that because it occurred in a Victorian port the State Government had a responsibility to hold and inquiry into the raid. “There are still many unanswered questions as to why this was allowed to occur,” Bray said at a rally outside of Liberal HQ on Exhibition Street, Melbourne. “We’ve seen no evidence that the replacement crew were competent, qualified or suitably trained. We don’t know what visa they were allowed to enter Australia on? “What we are sure of is that an operation as sophisticated as Alcoa undertook, with the hired security, must’ve been planned in advance and both the State and Federal Government would have to had some knowledge to allow the security guards and the foreign crew into the maritime security zone.” The MV Portland, which carried alumina between Western Australia and the smelter in Portland, Victoria has sailed to South-East Asia to be scrapped, however the route between WA and Victoria is still in operation. Alcoa have chartered foreign vessels, with a foreign crew to ply the domestic route in contravention to the Coastal Trading Act 2012. The Federal Government issued Alcoa with a Temporary Licence at the end of 2015 which enables the company to circumnavigate the laws. Bray said it was to be expected that profit-driven Alcoa would try and undermine Australian wages and conditions but it was untenable that the Australian Government would be complicit. “This whole headache could go away with the swipe of a pen. The Turnbull Government could revoke the licence immediately and the 40 jobs the MV Portland generated would be returned,” he said. Bray was joined by Victorian Branch Secretary Joe Italia who said the loss of jobs on the Portland was just the tip of the iceberg and if not opposed those job losses would permeate into other industries. Other speakers included Greens Senator Janet Rice, ACTU President Ged Kearney, CFMEU National Secretary Michael O’Connor and Victorian Trades Hall Council Luke Hilakari. However, it was when MV Portland delegate Dale Eaton jumped onto the back of the ute, took the microphone joined by his other crew members that got the 300-strong crowd’s attention. Dale spoke about the shoddy treatment he and the others had received courtesy of Alcoa. He also said that although the MV Portland may have sailed, the fight was far from over and that he, the crew and every other supporter would continue to fight for their jobs and for the right of Australians to work in their own country. Meanwhile, simultaneously in Sydney, the branch took their fight to the building of foreign Shipping Australia, the body that looks after the interests of international ship owners at the behest of local industry and workers. Approximately 100 members and supporters occupied the building until 2pm.

Justice Sinclair is the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, established as an outcome of the 2006 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. Justice Sinclair has served as Associate Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Manitoba since 1988 and the Court of Queen's Bench of Manitoba since 2001. Shortly after his appointment as Associate Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Manitoba in 1988, he was appointed Co-Commissioner, along with Court of Queen's Bench Associate Chief Justice A.C. Hamilton, of Manitoba's Aboriginal Justice Inquiry. That inquiry looked into the treatment of Aboriginal people by the justice system and made more than 300 recommendations for change including the establishment of tribal courts. Justice Sinclair was born and raised on the Old St. Peter's Indian Reserve in the Selkirk area north of Winnipeg. He graduated from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Law in 1979 and taught as an adjunct professor of Law as well as adjunct professor in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba. His Ojibway name is Mizanageezhik (One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky). He is a member of the traditional Midewiwin Society.

JSGS Public Lecture: Implementing the Duty to Consult: Explaining Similarities and Differences in Provincial Approaches to Aboriginal Consultation Presented by: Dr. Martin Papillon, Associate Professor, School of Political Studies, University of Ottawa Provincial governments in Canada have responded to recent Supreme Court decisions on the constitutional duty to consult Aboriginal peoples with a series of policies outlining their interpretation of this new norm and procedures to implement it. While these policies vary significantly, broadly reflecting the specific economic, political and legal context of Aboriginal-state relations in each province, recent developments suggest a convergence both in the definition and in the implementation of the duty to consult across Canada. This presentation discussed possible explanations for this convergence and its implications for Aboriginal-provincial relations and for policy-making in the Canadian federation more broadly.

On December 4, 2012, the Union of Ontario Indians HIV/AIDS program will launch a new video called "The River of Healing." The Union of Ontario Indians HIV/AIDS program coordinator Jody Cotter produced the video that focuses on harm reduction in drug use. "We focus on positive solutions such as youth prevention programs and strategies that help educate our people on the prevention of transmittable diseases such as Hepatitis C and HIV through unsafe drug use," says Cotter. "The video emphasizes the positive effects, such as healing, that can be brought about through effective methods of harm reduction. The aim of this video is to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with drug use in our communities." The video launch is in conjunction with the HIV/AIDS "Little Spirit Moon" conference held December 4-5 in Toronto. Produced by The Union of Ontario Indians HIV/AIDS program in collaboration with Regan Pictures, The River of Healing features the participation of the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network, the Ontario Aboriginal HIV/ AIDS Strategy, Nurture North, the AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area, and others impacted by HIV/AIDS. Dr. Jeff Reading Director of the Centre for Aboriginal Health Research based at the University of Victoria (UVic) Professor in the School of Public Health and Social Policy, Faculty of Human and Social Development, UVic Dr. Reading’s research has brought attention to such critical issues as disease prevention, tobacco use and misuse, healthy living, accessibility to health care, and diabetes among Aboriginal people in Canada. His determination to develop solutions contributed to the creation of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research - Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health in 2000 as part of a movement calling for a national advanced research agenda in the area of Aboriginal health. The outcome of the CIHR-IAPH is to improve the health of Aboriginal Peoples’ living in Canada and work collaboratively to improve indigenous peoples’ health globally.

Our unification ministry correspondent Connie Kim has this report. At the start of her term, President Park Geun-hye offered a vision for the reunification of the two Koreas. In her new year's press conference in 2014, she delivered a strong message on reunification. "I believe reunification in one word is a bonanza." Later that year, in Dresden, a symbolic city for German reunification, President Park laid out her plan for Korean reunification in three major areas: humanitarianism, integration and prosperity. She also launched a presidential reunification preparation committee later in the year. Over the next two years, Seoul moved forward with inter-Korean cultural and assistance projects to improve relations with Pyongyang, even as tensions between the two Koreas spiked in August 2015, when land mines on the border planted by North Korea exploded, injuring two South Korean soldiers. And a landmark inter-Korean agreement reached after the conflict seemed to push relations between the two Koreas in a new direction, with a new round of family reunions seeming to offer hope for the future. “However, with North Korea's nuclear test and long-range missile launch, President Park has made clear that inter-Korean relations will only improve when Pyongyang gives up its nuclear weapons program. It marks a sizable shift to a more hard-line stance against the North.” That shift was evident in the president's decision to shut down the inter-Korean Kaesong Industrial Complex,... which is the most drastic step to contain the North the president has taken so far. And she's warned there are more sanctions to come. "It has now become clear that the past ways of coping with North Korea cannot curb its nuclear ambitions but will only serve to strengthen the North's nuclear capability resulting in a catastrophe on the Korean Peninsula." Most North Korea watchers say Pyongyang's repeated provocations have tested the limits of President Park's trust-building initiative. "There is a limit to what you can do to push for security on the Korean peninsula and build inter-Korean cooperation... while North Korea continues its nuclear and missile development. This imbalance has been raised as a fundamental problem with her trustpolitk." But just as out of every crisis, opportunity arises,… experts say this is the time to review policies that could improve relations. "Talks with North Korea after an escalation in tensions will be inevitable for as long as the regime exists. The Park administration should not rule out the possibility of holding dialogue with the reclusive regime when reviewing its North Korea policies." Whether President Park is able to strike a balance between security and cooperation, between punishment and dialogue, in her North Korea policy... is a question that will be answered when her term comes to an end in 2018. Keynote speaker Dr. Anton Treuer closes out Inver Hills Community College's Student/Faculty Conference. This year's theme was Flourishing in a World of Disasters. In this talk Dr. Treuer discusses some of the disasters visited upon American Indians, as well as how the effects of those disasters continue to linger even today. What makes this talk so powerful is that it does not simply attempt to lay blame, rather, Dr. Treuer offers possible solutions for growth and the possibility of authentic global flourishing. (NOTE: the camera needed reset every 30 minutes, which is why there are three "two second" breaks. NO content was lost in those, and the battery died right as Dr. Treuer cited Chris Rock and how racist does one have to be to turn down a day off of work just because it celebrates a black person.
