Ein Film von Katja Becker und Jonathan Happ (2016) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem vom BMBF-geförderten Forschungsprojekt AFRASO –"Afrika's Asiatische Optionen" (http://www.afraso.org). Wissenschaftliches Konzept: Diderot Nguepjouo und Jürgen Runge Over the last decade, Cameroon’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector has gone through several mutations thanks to the new policy which has attracted various international investors from Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. As from 2012 on, the involvement of Chinese entrepreneurs has dramatically accelerated the pace of progress in the sector. Some of them switched from other economic activities they were already pursuing in the country whilst the others, mostly mining professionals, moved from the Ghanaian gold mining business to Cameroon. Chinese entrepreneurs have gradually become main players in the gold mining operations, recording successes, while other actors, e.g. Koreans, went bankrupt and in many cases have sold their business capital to Chinese without any competition. Through taking over those projects coupled with their greenfield mining initiatives, Chinese investors has gained the image of successful businessmen in the sector. As a result, their working style and techniques are gradually being adopted by almost all local and foreign investors. This is the context that spurred AFRASO researcher Diderot NGUEPJOUO together with the filmmaking crew UJUZI travel to Cameroon and shoot the 3rd AFRASO documentary. The film follows several active players in the major segments of the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) in Cameroon: a Chinese investor; local entrepreneurs (member of Parliament, businessman, and middleman); workers, small operators in “Nguéré”, civil servants as well as the affected communities on their working sites. The film reveals that political elite and administrative authorities appear to favour the involvement of Chinese operators because they consider it beneficial to the State and local entrepreneurs (service providers, middlemen…), while traditional rulers and business people who did not partner with Chinese are less supportive of this presence. Furthermore, the positive impacts resulting from gold mining are reported to be enjoyed by Chinese investors and some local entrepreneurs while the communities are left with the impact of these activities such as land disturbance, water pollution, diseases... All in all, the movie tries to put forward the ongoing dynamics and contradictions that are taking place in the Cameroon's gold mining.

Temporal Cluster Graphs For Identifying Visualizing Trends In Multi Attribute Transactional Data

Organizations and firms are capturing increasingly more data about their customers, suppliers, competitors, and business environment. Most of this data is multiattribute (multidimensional) and temporal in nature. Data mining and business intelligence techniques are often used to discover patterns in such data; however, mining temporal relationships typically is a complex task. We propose a new data analysis and visualization technique for representing trends in multiattribute temporal data using a clustering based approach. We introduce Cluster-based Temporal Representation of EveNt Data (C-TREND), a system that implements the temporal cluster graph construct, which maps multiattribute temporal data to a two-dimensional directed graph that identifies trends in dominant data types over time. In this paper, we present our temporal clustering-based technique, discuss its algorithmic implementation and performance, demonstrate applications of the technique by analyzing data on wireless networking technologies and baseball batting statistics, and introduce a set of metrics for further analysis of discovered trends.

From toxic chemicals in drinking water to unregulated interstate dumping of potentially radioactive waste that experts fear can contaminate water supplies in major population centers including New York City, are the health consequences worth the economic gains? Marcellus Shale contains enough natural gas to supply all US gas needs for 14 years. But as gas drilling takes place, using a process called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," toxic chemicals and methane gas seep into drinking water. Now experts fear that unacceptable levels of radioactive Radium 226 in gas development waste. Fracking chemicals are linked to bone, liver and breast cancers, gastrointestinal, circulatory, respiratory, developmental as well as brain and nervous system disorders. Such chemicals are present in frack waste and may find their way into drinking water and air. Waste from Pennsylvania gas wells -- waste that may also contain unacceptable levels of radium -- is routinely dumped across state lines into landfills in New York, Ohio and West Virginia. New York does not require testing waste for radioactivity prior to dumping or treatment. So drill cuttings from Pennsylvania have been dumped in New York's Chemung and other counties and liquid waste is shipped to treatment plants in Auburn and Watertown New York. How radioactive is this waste? Experts are calling are for testing to find out. New York State may have been the first state in the nation to put a temporary hold on fracking pending a safety review, but it allows other states to dump toxic frack waste within its boundaries. With a gas production boom underway in the Marcellus Shale and plans for some 400,000 wells in the coming decades, the cumulative impact of dumping potential lethal waste without adequate oversight is a catastrophe waiting to happen. And now U.S. companies are exporting fracking to Europe.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is officially limiting the areas to be mined and developed as part of the president’s directives to regulate mining operations towards sustainable development. Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu recently signed DENR Administrative Order 2018-19 which provides new environmental policies that will ensure sustainable environmental conditions at every stage of mining operations, and minimize the disturbed area of a mining project at any given time. The order covers all mineral agreements, financial or technical assistance agreements, and other similar mining tenements that have surface metallic mines under development, construction or are already operating. Meanwhile, mine sites with processing plants or those with long-term supply agreement with domestic processing plant can develop up to 162 hectares or two meridional blocks. However, areas utilized for ancillary facilities, such as settling ponds, stock yards, sumps, motor pools, administrative offices, and other similar facilities, are not included in the maximum disturbed area limit. Temporary revegetation or progressive rehabilitation shall also be implemented immediately on the disturbed areas exceeding the maximum disturbed area limit. Apart from limiting the areas, additional environmental include topsoil and subsoil management, buffer zone management, and pier stockyard as temporary stockpile area for ore shipment. The order also states that during the course of operation, an equivalent area should undergo temporary revegetation or progressive rehabilitation should the contractor or holder of other mining tenements intend to open an additional area beyond the maximum disturbed. This is to ensure that the maximum disturbed area limit is strictly observed. The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, meanwhile, supports the recent order, particularly in ensuring sustainable environmental conditions at every stage of the mining operation and minimizing the disturbed area of a mining project at any given time. The DENR warned that non-implementation of temporary revegetation provisions under the order may lead to fines, non-issuance of transport permits, or total cancellation of mining agreements.

Given that data mining scientists and engineers tend to inhabit different information worlds, the process of moving a predictive solution from the scientist's desktop to the operational environment can get lost in translation and take months. The advent of data mining specific open standards such as the Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML) has turned this view upside down: the deployment of models can now be achieved by the same team who builds them, in a matter of minutes. In this talk, Dr. Alex Guazzelli provides the business rationale behind PMML as well an overview of its main components. Besides being able to describe the most common modeling techniques, as of version 4.0, released in 2009, PMML is also capable of handling complex pre-processing tasks. As of version 4.1, released in December 2011, PMML has also incorporated complex post-processing to its structure as well as the ability to represent model ensemble, segmentation, chaining, and composition within a single language element. This combined representation power, in which an entire predictive solution (from pre-processing to model(s) to post-processing) can be represented in a single PMML file, attests to the language's refinement and maturity.

Bob and myself both have extensive knowledge of mines and mining techniques through working in the industry, old workings are extremely dangerous and must only be entered with a full understanding of how they work, many transfer chutes, winzes, shafts and open stopes make it a hazardous environment. History of Cligga Mine. Cligga Wolfram & Tin Mine lies on the cliff tops about one and a quarter miles southwest of Perranporth on the North Cornish coast. The granite pegmatite cliffs have been altered to greisen and exhibit jointing and veining. The veins often filled with cassiterite (tin oxide), wolframite, mispickel (arsenical pyrite) and the copper/iron suphides, chalcopyrite and bornite. Silver ore has also been reported here. There is one shaft on the sett called Contact Shaft and two adits, one at beach level called Beach Adit, the other atop the cliffs and unsurprisingly called Cliff Adit. The mine worked in the early part of the twentieth century although 'Old Men's Workings' from the past are quite visible as you approach the area. Mining restarted in 1938 after a period of closure prior to the mine being taken over by the 'Rhodesian Mines Trust Limited in 1939'. Trials were carried out around this time to see if it was more feasible to work the stockwork as an open cast pit rather than an underground mine, but this came to nothing. There is surprisingly little information on Cligga although there are production records showing that between 1940 and 1944, 300 tons of wolfram and 200 tons of black tin were raised and sold. 1945 Cligga Mine closed. The War was nearly over and shipments of American tungsten were now arriving regularly in England. The high cost of producing a small quantity of tungsten from Cligga could no longer by justified and therefore, production at Cligga was halted. In 1962 the 'Geevor Mining Company took out a lease on the mine and in collaboration with the Sungesi Besi, Tronoh and Panang Companies started a programme of shaft rehabilitation and deepening with a view to re-opening the mine. Contact shaft was deepened to 550 feet from surface, drives 'on lode' were started both seawards and inland. However water was hit at about 250 feet from the shaft and work there abandoned. The seaward drive continued for some 800 feet before further exploration by diamond drilling commenced. The results were inconclusive, and by early 1964 Geevor had decided to unwater 'Levant' mine instead of re-opening Cligga. 1976 there was renewed interest in mining for tin on a small scale at Cligga, and Wheal Concord undertook a limited programme of evaluation. Wheal Concord Ltd planned to re-open contact shaft in 1984-1985, but the collapse of the tin-market in October 1985 put a stop to this. Mining Social Media Data for Understanding Students’ Learning Experiences

Abstract—Students’ informal conversations on social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook) shed light into their educational experiences—opinions, feelings, and concerns about the learning process. Data from such uninstrumented environments can provide valuable knowledge to inform student learning. Analyzing such data, however, can be challenging. The complexity of students’ experiences reflected from social media content requires human interpretation. However, the growing scale of data demands automatic data analysis techniques. In this paper, we developed a workflow to integrate both qualitative analysis and large-scale data mining techniques. We focused on engineering students’ Twitter posts to understand issues and problems in their educational experiences. We first conducted a qualitative analysis on samples taken from about 25,000 tweets related to engineering students’ college life. We found engineering students encounter problems such as heavy study load, lack of social engagement, and sleep deprivation. Based on these results, we implemented a multi-label classification algorithm to classify tweets reflecting students’ problems. We then used the algorithm to train a detector of student problems from about 35,000 tweets streamed at the geo-location of Purdue University. This work, for the first time, presents a methodology and results that show how informal social media data can provide insights into students’ experiences. Specification Mining: New Formalisms, Algorithms and Applications

Specification is the first and arguably the most important step for formal verification and correct-by-construction synthesis. These tasks require understanding precisely a design's intended behavior, and thus are only effective if the specification is created right. However, it is extremely difficult to manually create a complete suite of good-quality formal specifications. Many real-world experiences indicate that poor or the lack of sufficient specifications can easily lead to misses of critical bugs. This talk presents research that seeks to mitigate the manual and error-prone process of creating formal specifications through automation. The overarching theme is specification mining - the process of inferring likely specifications. We present a collection of novel formalisms and techniques that are tailored for a variety of different applications. We study two topics at large - verification and synthesis. In verification, we show that relevant and meaningful specifications can be mined dynamically from traces of a design, and are useful also for bug localization. In synthesis, we study the problem of synthesis from temporal logic specifications and focus on the problem of finding environment assumptions. We show that, by analyzing the counterstrategy of an unrealizable specification, we can systematically generate candidate environment assumptions that guide the specification towards realizability. In addition, this counterstrategy-guided synthesis approach enables the automatic construction of a new class of semi-autonomous controller, called human-in-the-loop controllers. Further, we highlight efforts on incorporating Natural Language Processing techniques to make this technology more accessible to non-expert users of formal methods. We conclude the talk by reviewing our efforts on tackling the general problem of model construction and specification creation, and discussing their increasing relevance in the emerging world of cyber-physical systems.
