It is the computational process of discovering patterns in large data sets involving methods at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics, and database systems. The overall goal of the data mining process is to extract information from a data set and transform it into an understandable structure for further use. Aside from the raw analysis step, it involves database and data management aspects, data pre-processing, model and inference considerations, interestingness metrics, complexity considerations, post-processing of discovered structures, visualization, and online updating. Data mining is the analysis step of the "knowledge discovery in databases" process, or KDD. The term is a misnomer, because the goal is the extraction of patterns and knowledge from large amounts of data, not the extraction (mining) of data itself. It also is a buzzword and is frequently applied to any form of large-scale data or information processing (collection, extraction, warehousing, analysis, and statistics) as well as any application of computer decision support system, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and business intelligence. The book Data mining: Practical machine learning tools and techniques with Java (which covers mostly machine learning material) was originally to be named just Practical machine learning, and the term data mining was only added for marketing reasons. Often the more general terms (large scale) data analysis and analytics – or, when referring to actual methods, artificial intelligence and machine learning – are more appropriate. The actual data mining task is the automatic or semi-automatic analysis of large quantities of data to extract previously unknown, interesting patterns such as groups of data records (cluster analysis), unusual records (anomaly detection), and dependencies (association rule mining). This usually involves using database techniques such as spatial indices. These patterns can then be seen as a kind of summary of the input data, and may be used in further analysis or, for example, in machine learning and predictive analytics. For example, the data mining step might identify multiple groups in the data, which can then be used to obtain more accurate prediction results by a decision support system. Neither the data collection, data preparation, nor result interpretation and reporting is part of the data mining step, but do belong to the overall KDD process as additional steps. The related terms data dredging, data fishing, and data snooping refer to the use of data mining methods to sample parts of a larger population data set that are (or may be) too small for reliable statistical inferences to be made about the validity of any patterns discovered. These methods can, however, be used in creating new hypotheses to test against the larger data populations.

Examples of this include gait analysis, sport replays, speed and acceleration calculations and, in the case of team or individual sports, task performance analysis. The motions analysis technique usually involves a high-speed camera and a computer that has software allowing frame-by-frame playback of the video. Traditionally, video motion analysis has been used in scientific circles for calculation of speeds of projectiles, or in sport for improving play of athletes. Recently, computer technology has allowed other applications of video motion analysis to surface including things like teaching fundamental laws of physics to school students, or general educational projects in sport and science. In sport, systems have been developed to provide a high level of task, performance and physiological data to coaches, teams and players. The objective is to improve individual and team performance and/or analyse opposition patterns of play to give tactical advantage. The repetitive and patterned nature of sports games lends itself to video analysis in that over a period of time real patterns, trends or habits can be discerned. Police and forensic scientists analyse CCTV video when investigating criminal activity. Police use software which performs video motion analysis to search for key events in video and find suspects. A digital video camera is mounted on a tripod. The moving object of interest is filmed doing a motion with a scale in clear view on the camera. Using video motion analysis software, the image on screen can be calibrated to the size of the scale enabling measurement of real world values. The software also takes note of the time between frames to give a movement versus time data set. This is useful in calculating gravity for instance from a dropping ball. Sophisticated sport analysis systems such as those by Verusco Technologies in New Zealand use other methods such as direct feeds from satellite television to provide real-time analysis to coaches over the Internet and more detailed post game analysis after the game has ended. There are many commercial packages that enable frame by frame or real-time video motion analysis. There are also free packages available that provide the necessary software functions. These free packages include the relatively old but still functional Physvis, and a relatively new program called PhysMo which runs on Macintosh and Windows. Upmygame is a free online application. VideoStrobe is free software that creates a strobographic image from a video; motion analysis can then be carried out with dynamic geometry software such as GeoGebra. The objective for video motion analysis will determine the type of software used. Prozone and Amisco are expensive stadium-based camera installations focusing on player movement and patterns. Both of these provide a service to "tag" or "code" the video with the players' actions, and deliver the results after the match. In each of these services, the data is tagged according to the company's standards for defining actions. Verusco Technologies are oriented more on task and performance and therefore can analyse games from any ground. Focus X2 and Sportscode systems rely on the team performing the analysis in house, allowing the results to be available immediately, and to the team's own coding standards. MatchMatix takes the data output of video analysis software and analyses sequences of events. Live HTML reports are generated and shared across a LAN, giving updates to the manager on the touchline while the game is in progress.

The spectra are used to determine the elemental composition of a sample, the masses of particles and of molecules, and to elucidate the chemical structures of molecules, such as peptides and other chemical compounds. Mass spectrometry works by ionizing chemical compounds to generate charged molecules or molecule fragments and measuring their mass-to-charge ratios.[1] In a typical MS procedure, a sample, which may be solid, liquid, or gas, is ionized. The ions are separated according to their mass-to-charge ratio.[1] The ions are detected by a mechanism capable of detecting charged particles. Signal processing results are displayed as spectra of the relative abundance of ions as a function of the mass-to-charge ratio. The atoms or molecules can be identified by correlating known masses to the identified masses or through a characteristic fragmentation pattern. A mass spectrometer consists of three components: an ion source, a mass analyzer, and a detector.[2] The ionizer converts a portion of the sample into ions. There is a wide variety of ionization techniques, depending on the phase (solid, liquid, gas) of the sample and the efficiency of various ionization mechanisms for the unknown species. An extraction system removes ions from the sample, which are then trajected through the mass analyzer and onto the detector. The differences in masses of the fragments allows the mass analyzer to sort the ions by their mass-to-charge ratio. The detector measures the value of an indicator quantity and thus provides data for calculating the abundances of each ion present. Some detectors also give spatial information, e.g. a multichannel plate. Mass spectrometry has both qualitative and quantitative uses. These include identifying unknown compounds, determining the isotopic composition of elements in a molecule, and determining the structure of a compound by observing its fragmentation. Other uses include quantifying the amount of a compound in a sample or studying the fundamentals of gas phase ion chemistry (the chemistry of ions and neutrals in a vacuum). MS is now in very common use in analytical laboratories that study physical, chemical, or biological properties of a great variety of compounds. As an analytical technique it possesses distinct advantages such as: 1. Increased sensitivity over most other analytical techniques because the analyzer, as a mass-charge filter, reduces background interference 2. Excellent specificity from characteristic fragmentation patterns to identify unknowns or confirm the presence of suspected compounds. 3. Information about molecular weight. 4. Information about the isotopic abundance of elements. 5. Temporally resolved chemical data. A few of the disadvantages of the method is that often fails to distinguish between optical and geometrical isomers and the positions of substituent in o-, m- and p- positions in an aromatic ring. MapReduce is a programming model for processing large data sets, and the name of an implementation of the model by Google. MapReduce is typically used to do distributed computing on clusters of computers. The model is inspired by the map and reduce functions commonly used in functional programming, although their purpose in the MapReduce framework is not the same as their original forms. MapReduce libraries have been written in many programming languages. A popular free implementation is Apache Hadoop. MapReduce is a framework for processing parallelizable problems across huge datasets using a large number of computers (nodes), collectively referred to as a cluster (if all nodes are on the same local network and use similar hardware) or a grid (if the nodes are shared across geographically and administratively distributed systems, and use more heterogenous hardware). Computational processing can occur on data stored either in a filesystem (unstructured) or in a database (structured). MapReduce can take advantage of locality of data, processing data on or near the storage assets to decrease transmission of data. "Map" step: The master node takes the input, divides it into smaller sub-problems, and distributes them to worker nodes. A worker node may do this again in turn, leading to a multi-level tree structure. The worker node processes the smaller problem, and passes the answer back to its master node. "Reduce" step: The master node then collects the answers to all the sub-problems and combines them in some way to form the output -- the answer to the problem it was originally trying to solve. MapReduce allows for distributed processing of the map and reduction operations. Provided each mapping operation is independent of the others, all maps can be performed in parallel -- though in practice it is limited by the number of independent data sources and/or the number of CPUs near each source. Similarly, a set of 'reducers' can perform the reduction phase - provided all outputs of the map operation that share the same key are presented to the same reducer at the same time, or if the reduction function is associative. While this process can often appear inefficient compared to algorithms that are more sequential, MapReduce can be applied to significantly larger datasets than "commodity" servers can handle -- a large server farm can use MapReduce to sort a petabyte of data in only a few hours. The parallelism also offers some possibility of recovering from partial failure of servers or storage during the operation: if one mapper or reducer fails, the work can be rescheduled -- assuming the input data is still available.

Until the 1980s, databases were viewed as computer systems that stored record oriented and business type data such as manufacturing inventories, bank records, sales transactions, etc. A database system was not expected to merge numeric data with text, images, or multimedia information, nor was it expected to automatically notice patterns in the data it stored. In the late 1980s the concept of an intelligent database was put forward as a system that manages information (rather than data) in a way that appears natural to users and which goes beyond simple record keeping. The term intelligent database was introduced in 1989 by the book “Intelligent Databases” by Kamran Parsaye, Mark Chignell, Setrag Khoshafian and Harry Wong. This concept postulated three levels of intelligence for such systems: 1. high level tools, 2. the user interface and 3. the database engine. The high level tools manage data quality and automatically discover relevant patterns in the data with a process called data mining. This layer often relies on the use of artificial intelligence techniques. The user interface uses hypermedia in a form that uniformly manages text, images and numeric data. The intelligent database engine supports the other two layers, often merging relational database techniques with object orientation. In the twenty-first century, intelligent databases have now become widespread, e.g. hospital databases can now call up patient histories consisting of charts, text and x-ray images just with a few mouse clicks, and many corporate databases include decision support tools based on sales pattern analysis, etc.

The satellite also carried two wide-band video tape recorders (WBVTR) capable of storing up to 30 minutes of scanner or camera data, giving the spacecraft's sensors a near-global coverage capability. An advanced attitude control system consisting of horizon scanners, sun sensors, and a command antenna combined with a freon gas propulsion system permitted the spacecraft's orientation to be maintained within plus or minus 0.7 degrees in all three axes. Spacecraft communications included a command subsystem operating at 154.2 and 2106.4 MHz and a PCM narrow-band telemetry subsystem, operating at 2287.5 and 137.86 MHz, for spacecraft housekeeping, attitude, and sensor performance data. Video data from the three-camera RBV system was transmitted in both real-time and tape recorder modes at 2265.5 MHz, while information from the MSS was constrained to a 20 MHz radio-frequency bandwidth at 2229.5 MHz. In 1976, Landsat 1 discovered a tiny uninhabited island 20 kilometers off the eastern coast of Canada. This island was thereafter designated Landsat Island after the satellite. As of 2006, it is the only island to be discovered via satellite imagery. Data Preparation is a necessary, but often tedious, activity that is a critical first step in data analytics projects for Data wrangling. Data Preparation can include many discrete tasks such as loading data or data ingestion, data fusion, data cleansing, data augmentation and data delivery (writing out the prepared data to databases, file systems or applications). Data Cleansing is one of the most common tasks in Data Preparation. Common data cleansing activities involve ensuring the data is: Valid – falls within required constraints (e.g. data has correct data type), matches required patterns (e.g. phone numbers look like phone numbers), no cross-field issues (e.g. the state/province field only has valid values for the specific country in a Country field) Complete – ensuring all necessary data is available and where possibly, looking up needed data from external sources (e.g. finding the Zip/Postal code of an address via an external data source) Consistent – eliminating contradictions in the data (e.g. correcting the fact that the same individual may have different birthdates in different records or datasets) Uniform – ensuring common data elements follow common standards in the data, (e.g. uniform data/time formats across fields, uniform units of measure for weights, lengths) Accurate – where possible ensuring data is verifiable with an authoritative source (e.g. business information is referenced against a D&B database to ensure accuracy) Given the variety of data sources (e.g.,) that provide data and formats that data can arrive in, data preparation can be quite involved and complex. There are many tools and technologies that are used for data preparation. Traditional tools and technologies, such as scripting languages or ETL and Data Quality tools are not meant for business users. They typically require programming or IT skills that most business users don’t have. A number of startups such as Trifacta, Paxata and Alteryx have created software that is intended to help business users with little or no programming background efficiently perform data preparation. These products typically provide a visual interface that displays the data and allows the user to directly explore, structure, clean, augment and update the data as needed. The software often automatically analyses the data, providing the user with profiles and statistics on the data’s content, as well as semantic and machine learning algorithms that assist the user in making decisions on how to change the data for their needs. Once the preparation work is complete, the preparation steps can be used to generate reusable recipes that can be run on other datasets to perform the same operations. This code generation and reuse provides a significant productivity boost when compared to more traditional manual and hand-coding methods for data preparation.

Because not all R&D efforts lead to profitable products or improvements of products and spending on R&D can be risky for some companies. So, when companies want to invest in R&D in areas that are outside of their expertise or smaller companies who want to minimize risk with R&D, they can look to PARC to help them with their R&D efforts. This radar system gathered around 8 terabytes of data to produce unrivaled 3-D images of the Earth's surface. SRTM uses C-band and X-band interferometric synthetic aperture radar (IFSAR) to acquire topographic data of Earth's land mass (between 60°N and 56°S). It produces digital topographic map products which meet Interferometric Terrain Height Data (ITHD)-2 specifications (30 meter x 30 meter spatial sampling with 16 meter absolute vertical height accuracy, 10 meter relative vertical height accuracy and 20 meter absolute horizontal circular accuracy). The result of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission could be close to 1 trillion measurements of the Earth's topography. Besides contributing to the production of better maps, these measurements could lead to improved water drainage modeling, more realistic flight simulators, better locations for cell phone towers, and enhanced navigation safety. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission mast was deployed successfully to its full length, and the antenna was turned to its operation position. After a successful checkout of the radar systems, mapping began at 00:31 EST, less than 12 hours after launch. Crewmembers, split into two shifts so they could work around the clock, began mapping an area from 60 degrees north to 56 degrees south. Data was sent to Jet Propulsion Laboratory for analysis and early indications showed the data to be of excellent quality... Radar data gathering concluded at 06:54 EST on the tenth day of flight after a final sweep across Australia. During 222 hours and 23 minutes of mapping, Endeavour's radar images filled 332 high density tapes and covered 99.98 % of the planned mapping area -- land between 60 degrees north latitude and 56 degrees south latitude -- at least once and 94.6 % of it twice. Only about 80,000 square miles (210,000 km2) in scattered areas remained unimaged, most of them in North America and most already well mapped by other methods. Enough data was gathered to fill the equivalent of 20,000 CDs. Also aboard Endeavour was a student experiment called EarthKAM, which took 2,715 digital photos during the mission through an overhead flight-deck window... Endeavour also saw the recommissioning of the Spacelab Pallet system, used for experiments in vacuum. The 2007 Smithsonian Networks documentary Oasis Earth was made about the mission... Manual/Automatic classification and automatic segmentation for small photogrammetric datasets. Goal: extracting rocks from the ambiant background (ground) and segment them so that you can export individual point clouds for further processing. Methodology: Sofwtare = CloudCompare Beta 2.8 (http://www.danielgm.net/cc/release/ it has to be this one because the CSF filter is not included in previous version) 1. Manual classification with heightmap. The easiest way to classify your data if you have a highly contrasted and flat dataset (which is almost never) - Clone you PCL (pointcloud) to keep the original RGB information somewhere (if relevant) - Compute the heightmap as RGB - Convert the RGB values as Scalar Fields - Pick the relevant classification values with the Scalar Field histogram - Proceed with "select by values" to extract the relevant part of your data - Start again if you need multiple classification parameters - Clear the rgb colors from each extracted PCL and transfer the RGB values from the cloned PCL (if relevant again) 2. Automatic classification with CSF plugin (see CloudCompare documentation for more informations http://www.cloudcompare.org/doc/wiki/index.php?title=CSF_(plugin) ) A more robust alternative - It does not work with very small datasets (here around 4m²) so we have to scale up the PCL to trick the plugin into thinking it's a relatively big area - Still, I recommend using the finest settings to get good results with this very example - In the end, you get two PCL with extracted features 3. Automatic segmentation - If your extracted features which are somehow isolated one from another, you can run the segmentation tool (Tools - Segmentation - Label Conncted Comp) - You get in return a list of each feature as a separate PCL ranked in descending order of volume - The point here was very specific because we need to export each feature separatly to run surface and volume analysis in another software.

Cliefden Caves are an underground system of caves and fossils unique to Australia. They are currerntly under threat from flooding by a proposed dam on the Belubula River in Central West NSW, Australia. The Save Cliefden Caves Association represents a broad coalition of concerned citizens who oppose dams on the Belubula River that would impact Cliefden Caves. For more information visit http://savecliefdencaves.org.au/research Cliefden Caves 3D data was acquired by Robert Zlot in 2014 using the Zebedee 3D Mapping System. Zebedee is a handheld 3D mobile mapping system developed at CSIRO. The primary sensor is a 2D Hokuyo laser scanner which measures the distances to surfaces in the environment (over 40,000 measurements per second). A simple spring mechanism is used to convert the natural motion of the operator into scanning sweeps that result in a 3D field of view. Custom-developed software interprets the raw data to estimate the motion of the scanner and generate a 3D point cloud model of the environment. The above cave at Cliefden Caves NSW was scanned in a total of 3.5 hours over two days in September 2014.
