They dismantled our homes and we moved to another location. There are many people here and it is difficult to make a living. It is hard for us to work in the water all the way from the morning into the evening. It would be nice if the government could issue a place with good output to our people." 12. Various people come here to dig for gold. Sometimes they are chased by security guards of mining companies and get injured. They are chased day and night by security guards. Also during digging, gold shafts collapse and people die. I recently witnessed one collapse of a gold shaft and there was no rescue service there. Ninja miners had to drag themselves out of the hole and it was horrible." 20. Men looking in bags of dirt 21. Man sifting through dirt in his hand looking for pieces of gold 22. SOUNDBITE: (Mongolian) Boldbaatar, Miner and Medical Doctor "It would be nice if the government of Mongolia issued licenses to explore used or abandoned gold fields to these private gold prospectors. But there is also heavy bureaucracy in the process of obtaining licenses. We wish that the government would issue licenses for us to extract the gold deposits. We can pay tax for that." 25. Miners taking a break 26. Overhead shot of many miners at work in one area 27. bulldozer going across mining area 28. mining area as sun sets STORYLINE: Thousands of jobless fortune-seekers in Mongolia, burrow under the earth day and night looking for nuggets of gold. Lured by tall tales of those who struck it rich tunnelling the grey-green hills, these miners flock to the edges of the nation's burgeoning mining industry. Armed with shovels and buckets, they wait until the mine companies close shop for the day and then start digging. The big mining firms want authorities to crack down, but the government has few staff and little money. Recently, after three to four thousand migrant miners entered the licensed area of the Russian mining company "Golden East Mongolia" the government did take action. Once chased out they move on to other spots, where their prospects are usually less bright. But with the country's economy doing so poorly, and occasional stories of people who strike it rich, they try new areas and hope their digging will pay off. They live in makeshift structures wherever they can set up camp. The tools of their trade include large, usually green pans, which they carry on their backs to the digging sites. This is one reason they call themselves "ninja miners" as they look like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons when they are dressed in their green shells. Gold Mining in South Dakota | Largest Gold Mine in North America | Documentary | 1940

The Homestake Mine was a deep underground gold mine located in Lead, South Dakota. Until it closed in 2002 it was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America. The mine produced more than 40 million troy ounces (approximately 1.25 million kilograms) of gold during its lifetime. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * History of the Homestake Mine: The Homestake deposit was discovered by Fred and Moses Manuel, Alex Engh and Hank Harney in April 1876, during the Black Hills Gold Rush. A trio of mining entrepreneurs, George Hearst, Lloyd Tevis, and James Ben Ali Haggin, bought it from them for $70,000 the following year. George Hearst arrived at the mine in October 1877, and took active control of the property. Hearst had to haul in all the mining equipment by wagons from the nearest railhead in Sidney, Nebraska. Arthur De Wint Foote worked as an engineer. Despite the remote location, an 80-stamp mill began crushing Homestake ore in July 1878. The partners sold shares in the Homestake Mining Company, and listed it on the New York Stock Exchange in 1879. The Homestake would become one of the longest-listed stocks in the history of the NYSE (Con Edison's original name was New York Gas Light and was listed in 1824). Hearst consolidated and enlarged the Homestake property by fair and foul means. He bought out some adjacent claims, and secured others in the courts. By the time Hearst left the Black Hills in March 1879, he had added the claims of Giant, Golden Star, Netty, May Booth, Golden Star No. 2, Crown Point, Sunrise, and General Ellison to the original two claims of the Manuel Brothers, Golden Terra and Old Abe, totaling 30 acres. The ten-stamp mill had become 200, and 500 employees worked in the mine, mills, offices and shops. He owned the Boulder Ditch and water rights to Whitewood Creek, monopolizing the region. His railroad, Black Hills & Fort Pierre Railroad, gave him access to eastern Dakota territory. By 1900, the Homestake owned 300 claims, on 2000 acres, and was worked by more than 2000 employees. In 1901, the mine started using compressed air locomotives, replacing the mules and horses by the 1920s. Charles Washington Merrill introduced cyanidization to augment mercury-amalgamation for gold recovery. "Cyanide Charlie" finally achieved 94 per cent recovery. The gold was shipped to the Denver Mint. By 1906, the Ellison Shaft reached 1,550 feet, the B&M 1,250 feet, the Golden Star 1,100 feet, and the Golden Prospect 900 feet, producing 1,500,000 tons of ore. A disastrous fire struck on 25 March 1907, which took forty days to extinguish after the mine was flooded. Another disastrous fire struck in 1919. In 1927, company geologist Donald H. McLaughlin used a winze from the 2,000 level to demonstrate ore reached the 3,500 foot level. The Ross shaft was started in 1934, a second winze from the 3,500 foot level reached 4,100 feet, and a third winze from 4,100 feet was started in 1937. The Yates shaft was started in 1938. Production ceased from 1943 until 1945, due to Limitation Order L-208 from the Government. By 1975, mining operations has reached the 6,800 foot level, and two winzes were planned to 8,000 feet. Mining for Gold in Haiti: Haiti Helped or Exploited by U.S., Canadian Mining Companies?
Learn more: http://pulitzercenter.org/projects/haiti-gold-mines-foreign-companies-investment-government-distribution-wealth-poverty After years of rumors that gold mining companies were exploring in Haiti, Canadian and U.S. gold mining corporations now confirm they have permits to mine gold in more than 1,000 square miles in northern Haiti. Haiti's new prime minister says the estimated $20 billion worth of minerals in Haiti's hills could help liberate it from dependency on foreign aid and rebuild from the devastating 2010 earthquake. But many worry the gold mines will be a boom for foreign investors and a bust for local Haitian communities. Democracy Now! speak to Jane Regan, lead author of "Gold Rush in Haiti: Who Will Get Rich?" The report by Haiti Grassroots Watch was published Wednesday in The Guardian and Haïti Liberté. "You've got a perfect storm brewing whereby you're looking at giant pit mines in the north, in a country that's already environmentally devastated, and giant pit mines being run by Canadian and American companies," Regan says. "Most of the money that's made and most of the gold that's dug up will go straight north." (Modified from the original excerpt provided by Democracy Now!) Paul Harris about gold mining in Colombia
Subscribe to our newsletter at http://www.goldmoney.com/goldresearch. Paul Harris, publisher of the Colombia Gold Letter, talks to GoldMoney's Dominic Frisby about the state of the mining sector in Colombia. Though Colombia has been a gold producer for centuries, its mining technology has fallen behind the times due to the country's internal problems. It was only in 2002, when new president Álvaro Uribe Vélez assured democratic security, that a gold rush broke out leading to the discovery of 75-80 million ounces over the last 15 years. Discussing the conflicts between mining companies and environmental protection groups, Harris explains that some modern mining techniques are still poorly understood by people in the communities and local and national government. Therefore the mining companies need to better educate about their projects in order to combat fears from the public. Dominic points out that for many Latin American countries, natural resources make up a large part of exports, which is why mining plays a big socio-economic role. These resources can be very advantageous for the countries' economic development. They agree that the Colombian exploration sector has bottomed out and is ready to move higher again. In his report, Harris examines about 50-60 companies. He points out that Colombia is blessed with a great geographical location and recommends visiting the gold museum in Bogota, which displays an impressive selection of the remaining Inca gold. This podcast was recorded on 22 August 2012.

Illegal Chinese Gold Mining in Ghana
The Chinese regime is Africa's largest trade partner and miners in countries such as Ghana increasingly rely on Chinese equipment and capital. But there are concerns that Chinese entrepreneurs are involved in illegal mining activities beyond the view of Ghana's regulatory regime, and locals say their share of the profits is shrinking. Foreign gold seekers are nothing new in Ghana, but a new wave of prospectors are now making their presence felt, this time from China. Ghana's laws say foreign companies are only allowed to work on large, open-pit operations. But campaigners say Chinese entrepreneurs are also illegally controlling small-scale operations behind the scenes, typically through a local intermediary. Ghana is Africa's second largest gold exporter. More than 100,000 Ghanaians work in these small, dark mine shafts. Together they produce about 20 percent of the country's gold. The Chinese regime is Africa's largest trade partner with two-way volume reaching $100-billion U.S. dollars in 2010. Some welcome the Chinese because they bring necessary capital and equipment. But some workers in Ghana's pits accuse Chinese entrepreneurs of increasing their share of local profits. [Joseph Ben, Former Illegal Miner]: "The Chinese people bring their equipment which makes the work easy for you and they know the work too, but when you are sick they don't pay your hospital bills you have to use your own money." Mr. Ben says he used to work in a Chinese run mine where he was paid 80 Ghana cedi, or about $50 U.S. dollars, per month. Now he's paid twice as much in a mine owned by Ghanaians. Last month the police arrested 25 Chinese miners said to be working illegally around the village of Wasa. The association of communities affected by mining says Chinese companies have built networks of local people, including miners, local chiefs and security agents, to give them cover for illegal mining. Around 80,000 workers have been demanding an increase in their salaries, however their union has considerably lowered their demands. The National Union of Mineworkers, which represents two thirds of the miners, has asked for a 10 percent rise, a fraction of the 60 percent they had previously requested for some employees. South African President Jacob Zuma said: "Both sides must be ready to give, they must be ready to take as well, precisely because the strike and as you know the situation in the mining industry has not been good for quite a while". Integra Gold (ICG.V or ICGQF): Quebec's Next High Grade Gold Producer
http://goldstocktrades.com/blog 2013 has been a very busy year for some active junior miners. June was an exciting month where we witnessed some major financings. In July we saw a pullback. However, the junior gold miners may be reversing higher as the GDXJ bounces off the 50 day moving average. One example of a highly active junior miners that is also a featured company on my website and that I am a shareholder of is Integra Gold (ICG.V or ICGQF). I recently participated in the $10 million oversubscribed financing. What is driving this investor demand for junior gold miners such as Integra Gold (ICG.V)? Integra is one of the rare juniors that has a high grade asset, low capex, in the safe jurisdiction of Quebec and that is actively drilling advancing an exciting asset. Integra unlike so many other juniors has not been twiddling their thumbs waiting for the sector to turnaround. They have been actively drilling continuing to build high grade resources. Investors reject the junior miners who are just waiting for the gold price to rebound. Integra has been pushing forward aggressively on the exploration and development front instead of just crossing their fingers and hoping the gold price will turnaround. Despite the difficult precious metals environment investors continue to step up and support Integra. Integra has just come onto the OTCQX under the symbol ICGQF and plan to be active this fall meeting with retail investors and institutions in the US. Integra announced a PEA back in March which showed that it could be low capex with a quick payback. All in costs showed that the project could be profitable at today's prices. A cash rich major or mid-tier may be attracted to Integra's Lamaqure asset. We recently saw some big M&A activity in the area with the Osisko buyout by Yamana and Agnico Eagle. Integra's low cost, high grade asset could be next as they are continuing to hit high grades at the Triangle Zone. I am excited as it seems like their geological model is being confirmed with the drill bit. October could be an exciting month for this company as they plan to announce an updated resource estimate. Until that time I expect a continuous release of drill results. Now that the company is cash rich it may look for some mills in the area that may be up for sale. This could really influence the market perception of this company as a junior miner which is viable to come into production. Remember Integra has three diamond drill rigs drilling 20,000 meters this year and testing new targets along strike. I believe Integra's Lamaque Project could be Quebec's next major gold mine to come into production. Being located in the heart of Val d'OR, Quebec is a huge advantage as Quebec is one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world with great infrastructure and plenty of experienced miners. Disclosure: I am a shareholder and Integra is a website sponsor.
